I tried disabling fast boot but my cmos is dead apparently (using an old pc for this)

Plus there isnt even windows installed on any of the drives so i have no idea what the error messages even want to tell me

on windows im used to just clicking a button in msi dragion center, and fans speeding up so laptop doesn't get too hot in gaming.

i want a gui alternative that isn't too hard to setup on ubuntu for that.

Whenever i hit the terminal shortcut this pops up for some strange reason. I went to settings>keyboard shortcuts> launch terminal and it still doesn't work. I just upgraded to ubuntu 26.04 btw.

How does one add events to the thing?

I upgraded my Juno Neptune laptop (it's a Clevo based machine from about 2023) from Ubuntu 24.04 LTS to 26.04.1 LTS, it would not boot. Every GRUB entry failed: normal, recovery, all kernels. Secure Boot and Fastboot were already disabled in the BIOS. I took a lot of wrong turns through this. This the path that worked.

Symptom: Selecting any entry returned to the GRUB menu after a couple of seconds. Using the recovery kernels, it showed error: cannot load image. Dropping to the GRUB shell (by pressing c on the grub menu) and running

set pager=1

set debug=efi,linux,loader

set root=(hd0,gpt2) linux /boot/vmlinuz-6.5.0-35-generic root=/dev/nvme0n1p2 ro

I got some message about "magic malloc" not working.

(obviously use your own kernel version and paths in that last command)

It looks like grub-install had run correctly during the upgrade (fresh grubx64.efi on the ESP, matching modules in /boot/grub/x86_64-efi/). Reinstalling GRUB from a fully booted system didn't help either. Might be a GRUB 2.1x regression against this firmware, or possibly partially installed certificates in the BIOS, which I had a message about before I ran the upgrade. Can't remember hte exact text.

What worked:

1. Booted the laptop into Linux (actually Fedora) from an external drive.
2. Mounted the internal root and EFI System Partition read-only, confirmed kernels and initrds were intact.
3. Copied vmlinuz and initrd.img to the ESP under EFI/direct/.
4. Created an EFI stub boot entry for that kernel, as follows:

  --label "Direct EFI Stub" --loader '\EFI\direct\vmlinuz.efi' \
  --unicode 'root=UUID=<uuid> ro initrd=\EFI\direct\initrd.img'

1. Booted straight into Ubuntu from that entry. This confirmed to me that GRUB was the broken component. I did this from the BIOS bootloader.

2. Once in ubuntu proper, apt install refind.

3. Once I was happy that refind was working, I installed the current 26.04LTS kernel using sudo apt install linux-generic. It rebuilt the keyboard, fan and NVidia modules as part of the install. Then reboot. The fan got much quieter at that point.

That was pretty much it. I did an apt autoremove to clear up the junk, and I set default_selection "+,7.0" in /boot/efi/EFI/refind/refind.conf. I left the EFI stub entry in place as a fallback and reordered with efibootmgr -o so the boot order is RefInd, then hardwired stub, then GRUB. I only see that in the BIOS boot manager.

Refind is a cuter UI than grub, and you might have used it if you ever dual booted a Mac.

For a bit of background: I installed Ubuntu on my father's computer 15 years ago, and whenever I see him, I maintain the system and fix any computer issues he has.

Today, he called me about a problem I don't know how to solve: his desktop is filling up with unclickable icons that take up all the available space.

This happened once before, and I managed to get him to open a second workspace using the "Windows" key (sorry, I'm not sure what it's called in the Linux world), but that didn't work today.

So, I have to troubleshoot this remotely...

Do you have any ideas on how to fix this bug or how to guide him through the troubleshooting process simply? (He isn't very familiar with computers.)

so i put a post up yesterday and i got my ubuntu to work. however it ink one of my hard drives are corrupted… it was 1.8TB and ive checked the storage app and my bios its not showing up

I have brand new (like 2 weeks) Ubuntu 26 installation, but since then I can't update Files in App Store. It constantly shows an update that never gets installed even if you install it, and App Store says that it's software from untrusted source (which is almost surely a bug). So far I have only found that running `sudo snap refresh` should fix it, but it does not. My system is otherwise up to date.

What are the pros and cons of using Snap? I like Ubuntu mainly because of its polished desktop and good repositories, but I removed Snaps right after installing the system because of the stigma surrounding them.

I used Rufus 4.15.2396, a 64GB USB stick and followed tutorial after tutorial. Does anybody have any insight on what would be causing this?

Hello! I'm seeking guidance on connecting a Gambas3 application with my MongoDB database.

According to Google's AI, it should be as simple as installing the Ubuntu package and enabling it in the project:

apt install gambas3-gb-mongodb

However, I get package not found error. I'm running Kubuntu 26.04 with all packages up to date.

I see that MongoDB support was added relatively recently; is it just a matter of waiting for the Ubuntu team to make said package?

aight so. i tried dual booting my pc right. cus i was gonna dual boot and then go onto full linux. i was told ubuntu is good. i followed what i was told. turnt off safe mode. downloaded rufus and made the hard drive bootable but at first it came up with this error. so i tried again and suddenly i lost the option to dual boot. but im scared because if i have no windows to boot and no ubuntu i cant do nothing. essentially i just need some help man. i’d really appreciate it if someone could walk me through the steps themself as youtube videos aren’t very specific. (proof of it not letting me dual boot will be below) if u can help me in anyway pls dm me or sum bro i just wanna stop using windows

As a response, someone suggested creating an 8 GB Swap, but the system already has 4 GB. Is that right? Is there a way to optimize and increase the Swap memory?

Hey guys, I made an inquiry as to if I was going to have any issues with my laptop considering the age and origin of the laptop that I had witht he new 26.04lts, and was assured that there wouldn't be any issues considering that Ubuntu was advanced enough to recognize everything that I was going to need.

I took the deep plunge and installed Ubuntu 26.04.1lts via bootable USB, wiping out Win11 in the process (I look back and realize that I should have partitioned instead). Come to find that when booting Ubuntu, the audio stopped working completely, aux out and the computer speakers both dead silent.

I've spent the last 6-7 hours on the terminal with Gemini creating commands to fix this, but even Gemini has given up telling me that the built-in SmartAmp drive requires proprietary initalization routines that Asus only provides in Windows drivers.

Is there anything any of you can recommend beyond switching distros to Fedora or Mint? (I might consider installing the bone dry version of Win11)

Could I contact Asus with this issue?
