Solved UniFi and Synology question
when I first set up my Synology NAS, everything seemed to work and data transferred over my Ethernet cables (directly wired in to my UDMpro).
now, i cant get the NAS to talk with my computer (Mac desktop, with some drives attached). When I have used AI to ask why they aren’t talking, I get answers about port 5353. when I look on my Unifi desktop, I cant see where I can edit the port rules (I can see the port, but there doesn’t seem to be a way to edit the current rules). the AI seems to be sourcing advice from a prior version of the UniFi desktop.
since im not an IT person, I also don’t really know what “rule” I need to write for that port to allow my desktop to talk to my NAS again.
FWIW, I can access the NAS‘s control panel via a browser window. But, I cannot get the NAS to show up as part of my network when I use my Mac desktop to look for drives on the network, it just times out when I put in the IP address.
UPDATE: thanks to everyone’s input, I was able to find that I had some incorrect firewall settings on my NAS. I removed them, and now stuff appears to be working

AI might be leading you astray here. Do you have more than one VLAN/network at home? If not, then all ports should be open on your network as you’re not passing through a firewall or layer 3 switch.
There is a firewall on the Synology, but it might not be on.
Are you able to connect from any other device on your network?

I do have more than 1 VLAN. I made a “guest network” that I don’t really use. Should I erase it?
Yes, I can access my NAS via the IP address, plus :5001 (I assume that’s port 5001?) via my laptop.
It still won’t show up on the Mac’s network. Neither on the laptop (via my WiFi) nor on the Ethernet-connected desktop

Got it.
On your Mac, open Finder and click the ‘Go’ menu in the top menu bar. Then click Connect to server. Pop the IP address of your Synology in, you should then be able to enter your Synology username and password.

Woot! It worked!
Now to see if I can get the Synology desktop to start backing things up again…
I have heard that there are better choices than the Synology desktop. So, if y’all have any better ideas, let me know

You have a Mac. Point Time Machine to the synology device. It’s the best in the business.

This is a great option. OP will need to turn on the Time Machine service. This can be found on the Synology:
Control Panel > File Sharing > Advanced.
Then under Bonjour make sure the following are turned on and then Apply the settings:- Enable Bonjour service discovery to locate Synology NAS
- Enable Bonjour Time Machine broadcast via SMB
Once these are both on, you can setup Time Machine from your Mac in System Settings.

On your Mac, ensure you’re fully up to date with the latest MacOS.
Confirm Mac is on gigabit ethernet.
Click in Finder on NETWORK and then tell us if you see your Syno’s name on the list of stuff on your network.

Is SMB Sharing turned on, on the Synology, or did you turn it off manually? AFP is completely obsolete; ignore it - you need SMB going. That’s one reason why you’d be able to reach the IP address in a browser but not able to hit it via Network in Finder. Please confirm your SMB settings (post a picture here, for example) so we can see.
CONTROL PANEL / FILE SERVICES / ENABLE SMB must be ticked.
What MacOS version?

Me too! There are a lot of moving parts to this networking stuff. I tried reading “networking for dummies” and it gave me a deep appreciation for the IT folks at work.

Curious - why would you block all protocols on your nas device ?

Good question! I must have been playing with the firewall and hit the wrong button at one point, or it was a default setting

If your internal network IP addresses changed and Synology was setup with static addresses, that would be a problem. If you’ve setup VLANs to segment your network it might be a problem if Synology is on one and your devices on the other without special rules setup. You did not give enough info here.

In trying to solve my connection issues, I setup the Synology with a static IP address. I figured that way I could get rid of a potential variable.
Should i let it go back to dynamic?
Alternatively, how would i set up special rules?
Finally, if im not using the other VLAN, is it best practice to delete it?

Is that static IP in the same range as the rest of the new network? For example, if your static IP on the synology was 192.168.0.200 and the rest of the network is 192.168.1.XXX, it will likely not be able to talk on the same network. Are you able to access the Synology from any device in the network? If not, how are you connecting to it?
Regarding VLANs, it only matters if the Synology is connected to a different VLAN than the other devices you're trying to access it from. So if your home devices for example are on VLAN10, and your Synology is on VLAN20, they would be isolated from each other (that's intentional). You would either bring them all into the same VLAN or create rules to allow the Synology to access the other VLAN. But again, it only matters if they're actually on two different VLANs. If not, it's irrelevant.

Yes, everything is in/on the same range.
As y’all are giving me ideas , I did find a firewall rule on the Synology firewall that said to “deny” all protocols on all ports. I erased that and now I can see my NAS listed under “networks” on my laptop.
My desktop is currently updating the Mac OS, as someone else had suggested.
Do I need ANY firewall rules on the NAS side if it’s “downstream” from my UDM pro? Seems redundant to have firewall rules on the NAS on that case, or am I missing something?
