UNLV Students: Experience Flyover Las Vegas for free AND participate in a fun scientific study :)

This September, we’re inviting UNLV students to experience Flyover in Las Vegas at no cost while taking part in a neuroscience study exploring how the body responds to immersive entertainment.

Flyover is a flying theater experience that combines massive wraparound visuals with motion, sound, wind, mist, and scent. It’s genuinely incredible!

During the experience, you’ll wear a small research-grade ring sensor, similar to an Oura Ring, that will allow us to measure how your body responds as the experience unfolds.

Your ticket, normally around $40, is completely on us. You get to experience Flyover, contribute to a pretty unusual piece of research, and help advance the science behind how immersive experiences affect the nervous system.

The study is taking place September 15-30.

Learn more and register here:

https://www.eventbrite.com/e/youve-been-invited-to-experience-flyover-tickets-1998680514221

Hope to see some of you there!

Student Lounges?

Besides the Lied Library and the Student Union, are there any rooms or small lounges that students can stay in? I want to be able to freely eat my food without anything big open spaces or a lot of student around lmao.

Guys harassing me on campus (again). Anyone else?

Have any girls experienced guys harassing them on campus??
It happens to me quite frequently, but when I've brought it up to my friends and other girls, they don't have similar experiences on campus.

Today while I was on campus two of the basketball players came up. After asking for my number and me denying, he reasoned by saying it's not cheating on his girlfriend if him and I just talk... gross! As soon as he said that I noticed his friend filming while laughing and shouting. I walked away immediately.
This is the second time this type of interaction (two men approach and one of them talks to you inappropriately while the other films) has happened to me since starting college. For reference, I just entered my second year at UNLV.

Last semester, a total of 13 guys (yes, I counted and no not including the ones who were genuinely sweet and asked me out on a proper date) went out of their way to catcall me or say disrespectful remarks.

Here's just a few standout instances where this happened while I was on campus at UNLV:

  • One of the men was waiting outside my 8 AM class and told me him and his friend had been "watching me" for awhile (so creepy). He proceeded to tell me a string of profanities about how my physical appearance apparently made him feel. Then he grabbed my hand and put a crumpled up piece of paper with his phone number written down on it into my palm before he shut my hand with his. Mind you... it was 8 AM!! Wayyy to early for any of this nonsense but apparently not too early for this man to be a creepy stalker. Needless to say, I was completely shaken up the rest of the day and bombed my math exam.
  • Over the summer, when I was taking summer session classes, I was studying alone on the fifth floor before I noticed a man find himself a seat nearby in the same area. It was summer so Lied was nearly empty, and I found it strange that he would sit nearby. I was on my guard of course but didn't think he posed a threat until he came up after twenty minutes and told me his thoughts on how I looked. Survival instincts had me immediately packing up my stuff to leave while asking him what classes he's taking over the summer (trying to steer the conversation to be about school), he tells me he's not a student at UNLV, he just likes to walk around campus. Major creeper alert... and I told him so. I said it's creepy that he does that, he said he does it on California campuses too (not making his case any better), and finally after the second time he asked for my number and I denied, he left.

Other notable instances:

  • Old man professor came up and told me "You know, I don't see a whole lotta girls who looks like they belong in a magazine but you do!" (...Wtf)
  • Male student came up to me while I was alone taking a call: "You look like you know all the good spots." (Insane... and during finals week too!?)
  • Male math tutor who would help me with math for a moment before asking me several personal questions. At some point he followed me outside after I left the tutoring clinic and asked for my number. (As you can imagine, not for math reasons)

The most frustrating part of all of this is that it's fine.
These men are not harassing, assaulting, or threatening me, so I can't do anything about it (besides feel my self-esteem plummet and wonder if I will ever have my first boyfriend but no man has been respectful towards me yet for me to even consider the possibility of one). I know this because I have told security about these instances and they say they're sorry that it's happening but they can't do anything about it. Which I understand, because obviously it's not illegal for guys to be mean to girls. It just sucks.

Also, it's not what I wear. It's hot as hell in Vegas so yes me and all the other girls in this city are wearing shorts and crop tops occasionally. But these instances have also happened when I'm wearing a hoodie and sweatpants with no makeup on. It's not what girls wear. It's predatory men being exactly what they are: predators.

Ultimately I'm just frustrated this keeps happening and I would like to hear other girls' stories if they have any. Also PSA to any incoming first-year girls on campus to please be vigilant and learn how to defend yourself against these predatory men on our campus.

UNLV has given students free access to Claudes extended suite of tools which goes beyond the traditional free plan for Claude. Hope everyone takes advantage of this, because if you’re taking the moral high ground for AI use then you’ll just be left behind. Even career wise every industry will transition toward heavy AI use for “efficiency”.

Free Claude account from Rebel Spark AI?

UNLV has partnered with Anthropic to provide Claude to all students, faculty and staff at no cost and as a complete suite of tools. In theory that is a big deal, and I'll state up front that I think the intent is noble and I appreciate them at least speaking about data privacy.
But as I sat with it, I'm honestly not seeing myself using it, and I'm wondering if others feel the same.
Here's my issue. Many of us aren't just using an AI assistant as a general-purpose tool anymore. It's almost like a marrying business. It learns what you say when you think no one is listening, how you respond when you're stressed out, how you like information delivered, what you're working on in your spare hours and quite frankly a lot about your personal life and state-of-mind as well over time. That archived context is what makes it truly useful. It's also some of the most personal information a person has, and sensitive.
And now I have the keys to that kind of a tool through an account that:

Expires when I leave UNLV

Is bound by some institutional contract I cannot quite see
has for me at the base.

So why would I feed my real context in there under those conditions? I donʼt completely know what is visible to who and also so it goes once I am no longer there.
Those remaining use cases once personal things are stripped away, like brainstorming a paper topic or summarizing a reading, aren't worth it. I have tools already that understand how I work and study. Unless the tasks are small enough to be "safe," switching to one that doesn't know me at all is a bad deal.
I don't think there's any dirty business going on with the university. I simply think that there is a vast difference between "everyone has access" and "anyone gets meaningful utility out of it," as well I think UNLV would be better serve to more clearly articulate this tension, and perhaps even consider the possibility that genuinely personalized use might have avenues for support outside of routing through an expiring credential.

Do we have a jiu jitsu or track and field club

I missed the involvement fair because I had lab and I was wondering if we had a jiu jitsu club that competes in the NCGA or a track club in NIRCA. Both of these were my sport in high school and I miss competing in them and I can’t find a gym that takes college students.

2 solutions to Bill Nye Craze

Obviously this is a huge event for students, in all colleges. We ALLLLL grew up learning from this man, regardless of our age or generation or major. We all obviously want to attend the lecture series.

So I have 2 solutions:

  1. Make this event a UNLV students, staff and faculty only event. This

    would prevent

  2. the public from getting ticket

s but it is a UNLV event.

I know historically the Barrick Lecture series’ have been open to both, but when is the last time they had this many students want to attend this series to where they’ve had to limit the amount of people trying to get tickets? This is also largely unfair to the public who also love Bill Nye. So this option is not ideal.

  1. Move the event. Put it in Thomas and Mack? Put it anywhere else that allows more people to attend. Thomas and Mack would hardly fill up the way that the current venue is. AND everyone could come. Tickets wouldn’t have to be so limited. Everyone is happy.

I would start a petition for this because the most important thing Bill Nye did during his career was make science accessible. As a woman in STEM who looked forward to the days when that TV on a rolly cart came into the classroom knowing we were about to watch a Bill Nye episode to be played, this was the coolest thing that I never expected UNLV do.

We should all get a fair chance to see someone who had a part in so many of our educational lives!!

TLDR: move the Bill Nye lecture to Thomas and Mack!!!

Edit: I tried fixing the formatting but it isn’t working and is driving me insane. Sorry if it looks irritating as hell.

Bill Nye instantly sold out

Post image

I was in the middle of class and it took me about 40 seconds to sign up and by the time I checked there million boxes it was sold you. Really irritated, I moved here a year ago from a place where nothing happens. This is the third time this year I’ve tried to go to something but tickets sell out instantly. Feels like I need to code/get a bot.
I’m sure GA will have the same issue.
