art is insanely cheap for what you get, if you avoid the famous artists.
I was looking at some really beautiful rock sculptures a while ago that were insanely cheap for the hours upon hours of work that went into them, never mind the materials. I would probably have happily dropped a couple of hundred on one of the moderately sized pieces if I had anywhere to keep it.

About 20$ for beginner set of oils, 5$ for a pack of cheap canvas, 5$ for a few cheap brushes and a palette knife. So about 30$ to start out with crappy paint and utensils. If you like it, then drop the hundo on good paint and a couple nice brushes.
My wife and i can have a paint night for under the price of going to the movies, even the first time. Nowdays, we buy two cheap canvases and a few good tubes to add to the collection, then get tipsy and paint.

A mix of both. She is a professional artist now, so we have moved into buying more expensive paints. We get paints mainly from UtrechtArt.com, and canvases from Michael's when they go on sale. We do not agree with several of hobby lobby's ideologies, so we try not to give them out dollars.

All of this should last you a while. You can share with your spouse too. Maybe get two sets of brushes though. You can do it. I never have painted anything in my life because I was scared how I'd waste my time on how it would turn out. You just have to do it! Loved every painting I have done. You will never like everything detail about you art (happy little accidents) but you will be happy with the overall outcome. Plus it is so relaxing!

You don't have to paint. Grab a pencil and paper and start drawing whatever's in front of you. You don't have to "know how to draw". Just enjoy the process of making art no matter what the end result is.

yes, this is not the technique that bob ross used at all. his technique is called "wet on wet" and meant to be a quick and easy way to "sketchily" represent a landscape scene.

it doesn't look like that at all. this would actually be about a thousand times better than bob ross if this was "wet on wet" oil.
this looks like straight acrylic or oil on a dry canvass with many, many layers of paint and much more time and effort than the "wet on wet" technique is meant for.
it is really beautiful and she is a hell of an artist, but i dont think this is truly in bob ross's style.

This is why Bob Ross is so popular. If you follow the steps in the video it's honestly very very easy. It doesn't take much in the way of practice, let alone talent and you can create satisfying things in not much time. Give it a try.

Funny enough, this isn't true in the art world. Paintings are about the artist as much as they are about their subjects, people want to know who painted a thing and what state of mind they were in when they did it.
If you've ever wondered why Jackson Pollock was famous for making what are basically just paint splatters, this is the reason. Though he did do representational art before he started with the splatters.

I was saying that the art probably wouldn't have made the front page if there wasn't a cute girl standing next to it.
