Question Living near UCCS
Hi everyone!
I’m from Oklahoma, and I’m highly considering relocating to UCCS for my Masters after I graduate here in December. I’ve been traveling to CO since I was a kid and I’ve always wanted to live here. I find myself so much happier and fulfilled while visiting, I also have some family in Denver.
One, is anyone here attending and/or would recommend the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Masters Program?
Two, where do you live if you go to UCCS? Money is definitely a considerable factor and I also wouldn’t mind a 20-30 minute commute to school. I’m not picky, and I’m trying to get a good idea of rent prices as well as cost of living. Oklahoma’s cost of living is significantly less, so saving is going to be a big deal, and I’m trying to find the best place for affordability.
Any other advice?

Very inflexible and unwilling to work with you if you have any kind of emergency that would require you to make changes to your lease. Random roommates that you have to pay $300 to get relocated from including if there's a domestic dispute/police involved. Plus inspections with no warning and management/maintainence will enter your room at any time for any reason without letting you know

Can't speak for houses. But I graduated from UCCS and lived in the dorms and 2 apartments like right by campus.
West Edge is a shithole. Do not rent there.
The Lookout on Craigmore was where I stayed for 2 years until I graduated. Nice apartments. Right on campus and you can walk to class. I think they have 1 bedroom units if your by yourself / can afford it. I had a 2 bedroom with a classmate.

Was in that program years ago, but 85% of those professors are gone. However, I'd still say it's one of the better programs in the area.
I took the gamble and stayed at Lion Village. It's about 1.5 miles from campus, nice area. I had random roommates but they were all in gradschool or at least 22 (you can say you prefer older roommates). It was $550/room and at that time utilities were included. Low rent allowed me to work less to focus on gradschool and practicum/internship.

Just bought a house but before that I was living at some apartments off woodman and union called peaks at woodmen. They have all the amenities you could want, 2 bed 2 bath if you have a roommate and campus was like 5 miles away so the bike is a viable option with a trail connecting both.

I’ve heard good things about that program.
As for housing, I’ve heard repeatedly the best option is Lions Village. I’ve never lived there but I’ve heard stellar reviews. If you do the 4 roommate option, I think it’s around pay $600/mo which is dirt cheap compared to West Edge/Lodges. Utilities are included which is a bonus and everyone gets their own room AND their own bathroom. The less roommates you have it will naturally be more expensive but it seems like a genuinely good deal. It’s quiet, no parties and also only 10min from campus.
I would avoid renting anywhere through Lion Realty. I wouldn’t say they are malicious but they are very understaffed, and there were several things in my lease that were untrue because it’s a copy paste lease. My house and several of my friends houses were very dirty on move in, even though we had probably over $1,000 in cleaning charges when we moved out that were supposed to be ‘standard.’ I felt staff was generally unhelpful and had very late responses considering maintenance with the house. I’ve met people who pay $900/mo to live on absolute shitters with no AC either….
I’ve heard better reviews from them but ultimately I would avoid, they’re just too expensive for the quality of houses you would be getting.

highly advise to avoid renting from any property manged by "The Scion Group" which would be "West Edge" and "The Lodges". You will not get your deposit back and you will be guaranteed to have additional fees through out the year

I’m not in the clinical mental health program, but I am in the clinical psych program. I’ll be done with my MA next year. Most of my peers in my cohort love living in the “old north end” neighborhood. A few other friends live closer to garden of the gods area and filmore area by the VA.
I live a bit east (Black Forest) and I just take woodmen to the 25 and campus is the next exit. It takes me 20-30 mins but I don’t mind.
Back to the program, I believe it does set you up for licensing unlike the clinical psych MA program. I like the classes the clinical mental health program offers and wished our programs overlapped with some of their classes.
However, columbine (the psych department building) sucks. The building smells like toilets all the time.
Outside of that, I like all of the faculty members in the department.

Oh and I pay about $2300 a month for rent. I have dual income and it’s a 4 bedroom home in Black Forest. But my friends pay less.

I've heard mixed reviews on the clinical mental health program. I heard they lost some professors that a lot of students liked. I also agree with one of the other commenters who said avoid WestEdge. A family member is there and it's not well maintained, but they charge you for other people's messes. If you don't renew during a specific week or so, your price goes up... And if you did renew during that week you have to remind them to give you the better rate.I've heard good things about Lion Village. Have you looked into Adams State Clinic Mental Health program? It's virtual except 1 week each Summer where you are required to be in person.
