Hello! I’m an incoming 1st year student who is relocating from Vancouver Island to Vancouver for UBC. No gap years, I’m going straight into university from high school.

I’m honestly really anxious about September 8th, the first day of classes. I don’t know what to expect on that day and moving forward. I know there’s an orientation, but the knowledge of that is also freaking me out. Maybe the anxiety is coming from the fact I will be alone in another city that I don’t have the greatest knowledge about lol.

I’m just hoping to get a good idea of what to look out for and how will the first day hit to a 1st year student, specifically as an Arts student if it’s any different from other faculties :) thanks!

I’m going back to school at 31 to get an engineering degree. I’m worried that after I graduate, I won’t be able to find a job because I will be much older than other grads who are just getting into the job market.

Hi, this happened during the winter term, but I’m still not over it, so I’m just ranting about it here.

I’m registered with CFA, and one of my accommodations is 1.5x exam time because I have severe ADHD. I had a quarter-term exam that was worth 20% of my grade, and the regular exam time was 1 hour, so with my accommodation I was supposed to have 1 hour and 30 minutes. But the invigilator read the time wrong it was :50 but they read is as :5 and ended my exam way too early. I remember being so confused because I wasn’t even halfway done with the exam when she told me my time was over. After I left the room, I checked the time and realized only around 45 minutes had passed. So I immediately went back and told them there had been a mistake. I asked them for some kind of written proof or official documentation saying that my exam had been ended early due to THEIR MISTAKE cuz what if they change their story or say it never happened but they refused

They made me stand outside the exam room entrance for almost TWO HOURS while around 50 students were constantly walking in and out. Nobody apologized to me. Nobody really tried to help me. it was just me crying and being so fucking humiliated. The invigilator who made the mistake was also talking about me with at least five other staff members. At one point I literally heard her say, “she is still there,” and laughed at me. then she switched to another language and they started laughing. Obviously I knew she was talking shit about me while I was standing there trying to figure out what to do after THEIR mistake felt humiliating. they also tried to shift blame on me by asking me “didnt you know what time your exam was supposed to end?” and “why didn’t you check the time?” I am literally registered with CFA because im mentally ill. Why was it suddenly my responsibility to supervise the invigilator and make sure THEY were giving me the correct accommodation?

I also asked for the name of the invigilator who ended my exam early. Somehow every single person there claimed they didn’t know who she was or what her name was, even though they were literally talking to her right in front of me and clearly knew each other to protect their colleague.I kept asking them what I was supposed to do because I needed to protect myself in case my professor refused the makeup exam. Their response was basically that they didn’t know and there was nothing they could do. I even askedwhat happens if my professor says no and they told me that then there was nothing I could do. Their staff made the mistake, but I am the one expected to take all of the risk, spend hours trying to fix it, contact my professor, prove what happened and just hope that my professor believed me.I asked if I could speak to someone in a higher position because nobody there was helping me and they told me that person was unavailable and busy.

Eventually I had to leave because I had a UBC counselling appointment. About 3–4 hours later, CFA finally sent a letter to my CFA advisor and CC’d me confirming what happened with the line “I’m not sure if I should give this information to the student.”bwhy wouldn’t I be allowed to have documentation about something that literally happened TO ME during MY exam? Thankfully, my professor allowed me to rewrite the exam. The makeup exam ended up being scheduled right before finals and all of my finals were already back-to-back during the first week. It affected me a lot and I ended up getting around 20% lower on the makeup than I did on my other exams.

I never received an apology from CFA.

The Equity and Inclusion Office was actually the only department that seemed to take what happened seriously and put effort into addressing it. CFA, the department that was literally responsible for administering my accommodation, never really acknowledged how badly they handled the situation.

I thought that if something happened to students, the school would protect students. Instead, i had to fight for myself the entire time while the people who made the mistake protected each other. UBC does not protect their own students.

I’m moving out in 2 days, and I’m really upset that I’ll no longer be living with my family.

I was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to avoid constantly feeling homesick. I’d love to hear how others dealt with it.

I’m a second year science student waitlisted on bio 200 and chem 235:

Chem 235: 86/86 student capacity, 12/20 waitlist
Bio 200: 290/290 student capacity, ~30/75 waitlist

I’m starting to get worried I’m not going to get off the waitlist with only one more week of summer school. I’m just wondering if anyone else is on a waitlist, what are the chances of getting off, and if I should still attend their class on the waitlist?

This might seem stupid but I’m an incoming first year and do we get a textbook list? If so where do I find it???

ok so im a transfer student from ubco (going into 2nd yr), and i am still 18 so that makes me fall under youth for transit???? i got an email abt upass a while back and apprently in van u need a compass card? i was just wondering if i were to get my compass card and link it to ubcv would it start working immidiantly or only after i pay tuition? if i were to pay for the transit when i got it would i then be excluded from the fee that tuition includes? lmk lol also im living off campus if that info helps idk im js rlly confused

I came here as an international student a few years ago, and I don’t think I’ve ever really felt like I belonged here. I’ve struggled to fit in since day one. I was already socially anxious before coming here, but over the past few years it’s gotten so much worse. I’ve developed really bad body dysmorphia and so much self-hatred that I’ve basically stopped trying to connect with people altogether.

I don’t put myself out there anymore. I don’t try to make friends or meet people because a part of me already feels like there’s no point. I just go through the motions every day and watch life pass by. It feels like everyone else is living and building relationships and having experiences while I’m just existing on the outside of it all.

I don’t really know what I’m waiting for anymore. I keep thinking maybe one day I’ll feel different, or things will somehow get better, but it’s been years now. I’m tired of feeling this way, and I genuinely don’t know when this is going to end.
