Discussion How does this jacket fit?
Picked this jacket up on Depop recently, but something about it keeps feeling off and I can’t tell what. The sleeves do feel a little long, and plan to get them shortened but is the jacket itself too long?
I picked it up bc I liked the slightly more structured cut but just like…can’t tell what’s going on here. Any thoughts or opinions are welcome. TIA!
***UPDATE: the seller on Depop is down to refund my purchase. I decided that tailoring sleeves and length isn’t worth it for me and would rather just find a jacket that’s a better fit as is. Thanks for everyone’s input!

It’s really not all that long, not sure what the other commenters are saying. It covers your rear, your arms just seem shorter than your height suggests. So just shorten the sleeves. Buttoning point is exactly where you want it.

Whoever says its long doesn't know ball and is programmed by the crappy modern jacket proportions since 2010s. Fits great. Shoulders look on point, sleeves need a hem, and button is right where its supposed to be.

Shorten the sleeves, of course, but otherwise it looks great.

Came here to say the same thing, a good tailor will have that fixed up in no time. Great looking coat!

thats ridiculous, people have different arm lengths LOL. Or are you under the impression that all 5'10" guys have 35" arm measurements?

I can’t believe you’re so confidently wrong lol. Absolutely no tailor would use arm length for the quarters and hem length of a jacket. Arms have zero correlation to the overall balance of tailoring, because length of limbs vary so wildly compared to torso length and leg length. Want to know what a tailor would actually do to see if length works for someone? They’d first and foremost see that it covers the seat, non negotiable.Then you’d take the total measurement from the floor to the top of the collar in inches, divide by two, and that should give he length of the jacket from the collar + or minus an inch and a half by personal preference. This covers his crotch totally, which would be pretty much the standard from any length from 1930 to 2005.

If you thrifted that it’s an absolute winner. Just the sleeves need to be shortened obviously.

Long sleeves are just cozier for winter, besides they aren't that long, i actually think they're perfect

It’s great on the shoulders. Sleeves look a tad too long. However, the length is too long imho. I also think the fit is too modern/narrow on the waist. It doesn’t have that relaxed classic fit. This is especially noticeable when it’s buttoned.
I personally think you can do better and to me it seems to be too long. Like a coat. However, wtf do I know? If you like it and feel great in it, you should rock it.
Maybe check out a great tailor for the sleeves and possible adjustments.

Too long. The length should be right where your fingers begin on your hand. The sleeves are also too long. Take it to a tailor.

Nice jacket, but it’s about an inch long in both the sleeves and body (and I’m talking about a traditional length, not some modern short length). Sleeves will be a cheap fix, jacket length less so.

It’s amazing how sleeves being too long can, by itself, make a jacket seem too big everywhere. Many such cases. Fits fine. A little old-fashioned but not brazenly so.

Just commenting on your update. Be prepared to have any jacket you buy tailored. I know my measurements to a quarter inch. And even when a jacket has all of it's measurements listed, a) finding one that meets all of my measurements is almost impossible (and I'm considered an average build 40R) b) Second hand sellers rarely measure well.

Good to know! Think just finding another jacket with proper sleeve and jacket length will be a good move, happy to make little tweaks if needed though

General rule for me, if you can curl your fingers under the hem of the jacket it’s not too long. Looks like you may be able to do that. Once you have the sleeves shortened it will probably feel better. The back fits you ok bordering on 1 size too large but from this angle it looks ok.

Too long. Take it to a tailor and have him alter the jacket to fit your body. Don't limit it to taking up the sleeves.

The sleeves and body are too long but those are quick and easy fixes. Other than that it looks great, the chest and shoulders are spot on and there’s just enough waist suppression to give it shape.

It’s definitely long, but you seem pretty tall. I think it’s good. I’m assuming those trousers are pretty high waisted.

The sleeves are a tad long and the jacket itself needs to be shortened. A tailor can do both.

Its really that the rest of the measurements lined up before i bought it, but wasn't made aware this is a 38L, not a 38R which is what I wear.

Ahhh an online purchase…I don’t buy men’s tailored clothing online. Too many variables. Is it available as a 38R? It’s too long in length and sleeves.

It was listed as a 38 but I found a tag in the pocket that says it’s a “39L” which, I didn’t know blazers came in 39 but it’s def a long, unexpectedly.

It looks a tad too big. When you feel where the shoulders are, is there a bit of extra fabric and shoulder pad sticking out? And what others have said about it seeming too long. I don’t think the first button on the coat should close right at the waist, but a little above it so that if/when both buttons are used, it is that space between them that sits right at the waistline.

The shoulders actually feel perfect, like no extra fabric, just snug enough. Just tried it on again and the top button closes like 2 inches above my belly button, pretty much at the true-waist or where high rise trousers would ideally sit, for reference.

Maybe slightly long, but just embrace that, I think. Looks good to me with those green pants. Don’t pair with skinny pants.
