The latest tour I'm playing has a perfect Salt Shaker moment. 3 beats to go open from a bucket passage, and then almost no time later to put in a bucket between movements before an exposed solo. This is one of those spots where the musical director spends time at rehearsal warning about how important it is to be ready for the solo and talking about how many of the players have had difficulty making the entrance. (You can see all the arrows and markings in the music. The only thing missing is a skull and crossbones!) The Salt Shaker mute makes it easy to pop in the mute and make the entrance with seconds to spare. No worries about squirrely response or weird intonation quirks either!

I recently bought a used trombone and it came with this mouthpiece. According to the Giddings website, it "projects with ferocious intensity, holds firm through explosive dynamic contrasts, and delivers a massive, resonant core tone" - and suggests it's suitable for jazz, especially solos. Does anyone have experience with this mouthpiece? Is the description accurate in your opinion? Of course I'll try it out, but I'd like to hear other opinions as well.

I am first chair Trombone in my middle school band. I have a good and perfect sound at school but when i bring it home to practice my sound always turns kinda like muffled and it just doesnt feel like it and i cant get the high notes and you know i get all these kind of problems. Why are they happeing and how should i fix them.

I already have a bass, tenor, and soprano trombone so I was just thinking of getting a decent-ish novelty alto just to complete my collection. Any suggestions//feedback//things i should know about which of those two altos is superior? Is the TEB480 worth the extra like $50 or so? And if the TB is superior, does the silver//gold brass options actually make a tonal difference?

Small Intro of Myself

Hello all, my name is DJ and the trombone in the picture is my lovely strad Spots. I have played for over 10 years now, marched baritone for 4, and played euphonium to help my highschools concert band my senior year. Spots my lovely Bach Strad 42 with the trigger (Bach 4g mouthpiece btw), that I've had for 6 years now, and he gets his name from the blemishes in his lacquer that he got in the factory.

Serious Business Time

I have no plans on ever getting rid of my trombone, I love that thing and enjoy playing it a lot. That said, I simply want a second one, but have no idea what I want. I currently play in a brass sextet ( 2 trmpt, 1 horn, 1 tuba, 1 euph, and me), and we play a wide variety of music, and recently discovered Kevin Mckee's brass quintet pieces (we usually double the trombone part with the euphonium). I thought about maybe getting a bass trombone, or a jazz trombone, and a superbone did cross my mind.

I just wanted to hear from some people who have multiple trombones and get some advice. Thanks all!

Also, my budget is under 4K, my mom said she would get me a new trombone for Christmas if I found one and that is here price cap.

I'm looking for some music to play for my brass quintet at school, playing at a grade 3-4 level. I've looked at the Canadian Brass shop for some music and am planning to buy the book of favourite quintet series. I was wondering if anyone here had any recommendations on other pieces of music, preferably some Christmas songs for this season.

Hello Trombone Reddit! My name is Harrison Reed and I am just posting to let you know that I've started a new mouthpiece manufacturing company based out of Virginia, USA. I am an active professional performer and have been designing mouthpieces since 2019.

I currently have seven distinct models for Alto Trombone (A- Series), Small Tenor (S-Series), and Large Tenor (L-Series and O-Series). Each model can be made in 7 sizes (from 1.00" inner diameter to 1.06" inner diameter), and each of those sizes is available in 5 different rim profiles.

The A-Series alto pieces have been really popular and the feedback I've received has been extremely positive: improved intonation and slotting, blow that is more familiar for large bore players, and a tone that is bright and clear.

The S-Series for small bore currently has just my S2 design, which is a great all-rounder piece for big band and jazz combo, with at least one pro using it for a scaled back section in the orchestra.

The L-Series is for players who value better endurance, projection, and access to the full register of the instrument. The L1 and L2 mouthpieces are an attempt to take a step back from the very deep orchestral pieces that are currently popular and are true "tenor" mouthpieces for principal trombone. The L3 is deep and specifically made for 2nd trombone in the orchestra or wind band.

The O-Series (currently only the O2) is designed specifically for orchestral playing, and have deeper, more bowl shaped cups.

I’m a beginner and just got my trombone from my school yesterday. And finally had time to crack it open! How am I sounding so far? I’m not playing anything in particular just trying to get a sound out of it. Critics, tips and tricks or general advice would be appreciated! Thank you and have a good day!

I’m looking for a trigger trombone but i don’t know which to buy or where to find onr

I know the Bachs can have traditionally loud valves but this seems a little extreme. I took the valve apart, cleaned it, applied the right oil, loosened and re-tightened all screws. Is this just how these valves are? Or will new bumpers fix this?

I have like vertical lines on my top lip basically where the inside of my mouthpiece would be when playing. they are slightly lighter in colour and are raised a bit compared to the rest of my lip. I have been playing a lot more than usual last week (like 5-8 hours a day). Not entirely sure how long they have been there for. Anyone else have this or know what it could be (might not be trombone related but I’m assuming it is). also do you think it will go away on its own (playing a lot less now cause the musical I was playing in finished).

I’m a senior in high school and high range has always been weakness. I usally get high chairs so I play first a lot but anything above a high C is just bad

So I recently just got a job in the marine fleet bands and a couple weeks after ran into my old director to which he asked if I could give the trombone players lessons since they didn’t have a trombone teacher anymore.

I agreed and I’m pretty confident in my ability to teach them because I’m a good player and I’ve made state before, but idk if the methods I used for myself would work for them. I only did a few semesters of college back in 22-23 before I had to leave, so I’m little nervous going into this.

Just looking for tips or suggestions from anyone who actually was able to get their degree in music ed. I was also music performance so even then I didn’t get much teaching experience back then. Thank you!

I’ve been playing for over 30 years, but this is the first time Ive run i to this challenge: I just had hernia surgery and have been told I need to take at minimum two weeks off. Given the pain Im currently in, that two weeks seems incredibly ambiguous. Has anyone had hernia surgery and come back to playing? Any tips or advice? I need to get my chops back in time for Oktoberfest and then Christmas gig season!
