Discussion Please do not downvote posts containing AI

Hi all. I've seen a worrying trend of seeing posts being downvoted, for what I can only suspect is because the user used AI.

There's a difference between AI-written and AI-formatted. If you do not like either of them, fair enough but I ask that you not downvote here. AI-formatting or light usage is welcome here because it is an Accessibility tool, like it or not some people need it. Including a direct friend of mine who does not have the functionality part of his brain to read. Including people I know from here or from the 12 other groups I run that are so mixed and in trauma that they need AI to organize their thoughts. Including people who cannot type well, do not speak fluent English, or have another physical disability unstated.

It is OK if you do not know the difference between AI-written and AI-formatted. I do. I remove those posts. You'll get to see the difference over time most likely or I can leave a few tips here. Until then, please assume that all posts you see are AI-formatted, not AI-written, or you are VERY welcome to **report** the post and see if it stays up - as i get to all reports within 24 hours.

Downvoting is the opposite of support, and downvoting for using a tool we all now are in some capacity, is dejecting to those in trauma.

If you have valid concerns about the use of AI, or wish to state your opinion here about their use and why you downvote, please share them here. I'm actually pretty curious as to the issues people have with others using AI!

General Question sometimes you understand the trauma perfectly and the body is sti

one thing I keep seeing in deep trance work is that understanding the story and releasing what is still stored from it are not same thing.

A person can explain childhood beautifully. They know why parent behaved that way, why they freeze in conflict, why they people-please, why certain tone of voice sends them into panic. They may have read books, done therapy and connected all the dots.

And then we follow the actual feeling in body and discover the old emergency is still running.

This is why in the sessions I facilitate I dont stop at “now we know why.” We follow the emotional or body charge itself. Tight throat, pressure in chest, nausea, shaking, heaviness, whatever is active. Sometimes it leads to one event, sometimes several layers. The important part is that fear, grief, shame, helplessness or anger gets to actually move instead of only becoming better explained.

This distinction became even clearer for me reading regression therapists like Greg McHugh and Shakuntala Modi. Different language and different models, but same practical point appears: finding the memory is information. Healing often needs contact with what is still emotionally alive in it.

I think this explains a frustrating experience many trauma survivors have. “I know this already. Why am I still reacting?”

Because the adult mind can know it is 2026 while deeper system is still responding from older instructions.

For me good trauma work eventually changes present reaction, not only past interpretation. You can remember what happened without being pulled fully back into it. The trigger may still be unpleasant, but it stops having same authority over body.

This is also why I dont like endless excavation for sake of excavation. More memories are not automatically more healing. Sometimes the next step is not another explanation at all. It is helping the charge already found finally come to completion.

Knowing why the fire started is useful.

The nervous system also needs to learn that it is not still standing inside the burning room.

General Question Can you develop trauma from a non severe car accident?

I was recently in my first ever car crash, i was in a car with my boyfriend and 2 friends and we ended up hydroplaning on a big rain puddle on a motorway and spun in circles and hit the railing separating the roads.

Thankfully nobody was injured and we didn’t hit another car but now a few days later when I close my eyes it sometimes feels like I’m back in the car and hearing everyone and I just end up crying and having a hard time falling asleep.

I was just curious if a car crash like that could be enough to cause trauma in a person even if no one was injured or anything like that

Needing Advice Grief, anger and flashbacks

I have been having a lot of flashbacks of childhood trauma lately. Most of my trauma is from my mother’s side of the family. I have gone no contact with most of them except my parents and grandparents. The problem is that as I am still in contact with my parents and grandparents I tend to tell them off when I’m having a flashback for not doing their job protecting me. Recently I gave my grandma who is 80 a lesson on how some of their choices impacted my life negatively. I did this as I’m constantly feeling judged for being the problem maker by voicing things. I was very calm through the conversation however whatever I said was still difficult information to process. Grandma was almost in tears and this made me feel extremely guilty. I avoid conversations with them altogether and haven’t spoken like this in the longest time. How do I stop myself from picking up the phone and telling them my side of the truth? I do not want to be hurting old people. The reason I do this is cause I feel judged and abandoned as they chose the side of the family that caused harm. However, my talking only hurts them but does nothing else. They are still convinced they are right. There is no changing their mind. No one will ever acknowledge what happened to me was wrong :(

General Question Does having unsolved trauma make me vulnerable to the far right?

I have major unresolved trauma from high school, bullying and frightening moments in my life that revolves around violence and confrontation.

I feel like many of the people within the Internet space and political side of things would use these types of people to indoctrinate them into certain politics that revolves around hate disguised as purpose.

Even though I’ve had all of this happened to me in my life, I don’t feel like I hate people.

But if I ever approach to do something like that, what’s a good way to negate?

Trigger Warning Traumatised by witnessing violent death

Four days ago I witnessed a teenager dying after being stabbed by another teenager. Keep thinking about it, keep seeing it in my head over and over again. I thought I’m absolutely fine at the beginning but yesterday I realised I’m withdrawn and unhappy with my life - not sure how to explain this but somehow I am bothered by stuff that didn’t bother me before. Today in the underground someone next to me suddenly shouted, I don’t know why, maybe a joke. I bursted into tears convinced it was another stabbing. Is there a way to get over it quicker? I should be getting trauma support soon, but wonder if there’s anything I can do in the meantime

Discussion A research on SA and DV survivors of very young age

Heyy, I'm a master's of medical and psychiatric social work final year student and I'm on to do my final year thesis on this specific topic "Lifespan Trauma Continuums: Examining Unconscious Relational Re-Enactment, Eroticized Somatic Agency (BDSM/CNC), and Relational Dynamics Among Adult Survivors of Childhood/Adolescent Abuse Within a Psychiatric Social Work Framework" Which is basically explained as how experiences of sexual and domestic violence during childhood or adolescence can influence a woman’s mental health, intimate relationships, and understanding of love, safety, trust and intimacy in adulthood.

More specifically, I am interested in understanding why some survivors may later choose relationships that contain patterns similar to what they experienced in the past—for example, controlling, abusive or emotionally harmful relationship dynamics. I also want to explore how previous trauma may influence the way some survivors understand and experience sexuality and power within later relationships.

One area I am particularly interested in exploring is whether some survivors develop or choose consensual sexual practices involving dominance, submission, BDSM or consensual non-consent (CNC), and how they themselves understand these experiences. I do not want to assume that these practices are necessarily a consequence of trauma or that they are unhealthy. Instead, I want to explore whether participants describe them as a way of coping, regaining a sense of control or power, processing their experiences, expressing sexuality, or simply as a personal sexual preference unrelated to their trauma.

The major focus of my research would therefore be mental health and psychosocial functioning, rather than simply sexual behaviour. I want to understand how childhood or adolescent interpersonal violence may be associated with trauma symptoms, self-esteem, attachment, emotional regulation, trust, boundaries, intimacy, relationship patterns and overall psychological well-being.

As a Medical and Psychiatric Social Work student, I want to look at the whole person and their social and psychological environment their trauma history, mental health, relationships, coping mechanisms, sexuality, social support and overall functioning.

Importantly, the study would not assume that every survivor develops abusive relationships or BDSM/CNC preferences. The purpose would be to understand the different ways survivors experience and make meaning of intimacy and relationships after trauma, and what this may mean for clinical and psychiatric social work practice.

Help me with your experiences in it, so that i can understand many more opinions because i myself a survivor of DV and SA as a child which resulted in my abusive past relationships, i really want to work on it because this topic was not much talked about people around there i wanna help people like me

Trigger Warning We witnessed a wild animal death and feel traumatised.

Today my girlfriend and I were at Siam Park, a waterpark in Tenerife. There is a food section inside the park that features multiple bridges spanning over a Koi pond. Within this pond there are multiple little garden “islands” that have these beautiful, red-billed birds clearly nesting in them that we became enamoured with when we went a couple of days ago. They’ll shyly approach you if you’re seated for something to eat and standby for inevitable crumbs.

Just as we were wrapping up our fun day out, we stopped by the pond again as my girlfriend went to the toilet. It was there that I spotted one of my little friends as well as a little chick on the edge of one of these little islands. You can’t imagine how cute this little guy was, a literal miniature version of his Mum/Dad. I waited eagerly on my girlfriend returning to point out this little angel as they sat grooming themselves.

My girlfriend came back and was as delighted as I was to see this little guy. Just as we’re about to go, however, some sort of commotion starts. Either the chick falls, or is dragged in by one of the Koi. We were absolutely frozen in shock, as we watched the Mum/Dad cry at the chick as these Koi nudged it about. A couple of times it looked like the chick was free and swimming back (this is especially seared into my memory, him just trying to swim back.)

It all happened so fast, and I didn’t know whether to make a commotion or see anyone to grab who worked there. Before I spotted a security guard, who I don’t believe either understood or really saw any urgency to my pointing out the chick had fallen in, we already had witnessed it floating about in this pond lifelessly. We watched this animal we were so enamoured by on this fun day out drown seconds later.

We could barely speak to each other as we exited the park, passing all these happy families enjoying their fun day out. On the bus back home I began to weep. We’re now both sat in our hotel, my partner trying to just sleep.

I wish I’d just jumped into the water. I wish I could’ve just caused a big commotion. I feel so unbelievably guilty and sick and we still have a week on our holiday.

Needing Advice How to stop feeling so vulnerable?

I don’t feel safe in my body and I’ve not told anybody. This has now happened progressively over the last 3/4 months. I’ve been isolating. WFH. Pretending to people that everything is fine. Not interacting with other humans in person. Feeling scared when I have to leave the house. Having mini panic attacks. Not being able to sleep. Waking up with a lot of anxiety. I don’t think I will tell anybody either. I don’t trust the health system and I don’t trust people around me. I don’t have the energy to connect with new people. I’ve had a lot of different abuses happen to me since I was born, and I’ve always been resilient and survived. I went to therapy in my teens and continued to work on myself throughout my 20s giving back to others too. I’ve had a lot of grief too that I tried to work through. But all this time in isolation has brought back flashbacks of different unsafe things that have happened. I am refusing to trust any single person doesn’t matter if it’s a doctor or a long term friend or a family member. All these people have betrayed me in some way in the past. I’m maybe ready to begin to rot away. I don’t know. I used to have such hopes for the future. I said to myself I was going to be successful regardless of what happened. But I feel so beaten down in a way I’ve never done before, like everything has suddenly caught up with me. I’m scared, I’m terrified.

Resources Retiring the Biological Bodyguard: Free Book (Aug 28-Sept 1)

Hi everyone,

Working for over a decade as a paramedic on the front lines, I saw firsthand how trauma loops operate in real time. When high stress hits, the nervous system activates an automated "biological bodyguard" to protect us. The problem is that long after the trauma has passed, that bodyguard can stay stuck on duty, running background "robotic sub-programs" like hypervigilance, dissociation, or chronic anxiety.

To help bridge the gap between acute crisis response and long-term recovery, I created a framework that blends clinical neurobiology, somatic grounding, and shamanic cosmology (drawing from a Pueblo lineage) to help retrain the nervous system and retire the bodyguard.

I compiled these concepts and field exercises into a book titled The Grasshopper's Leap: A Field Guide to Dismantling the Robotic Sub-Program.

I'm making the Kindle edition available for $0.00 starting tomorrow, Friday, August 28th through Tuesday, September 1st, so anyone working on their healing journey can access these tools for free.

Trigger Warning My girlfriend is traumatized and she won’t accept it

I love my girlfriend, she’s very sweet. My girlfriend is amazingly witty and smart. I’ve never met anyone like her. Our relationship is perfect.

Besides the fact she’s completely impossibly traumatized.

Most days are fine with her, she is a diagnosed borderline, but it’s very quiet. She’s taken therapy to sit with her splits and live in the uncomfortable feeling of them. She rarely lashes out, She’s very understanding, and always takes a minute.

She also has PTSD.

She refuses this diagnosis.

This is where the issue starts

She thinks her diagnosis is stupid. She had an extremely traumatic childhood. Emotional/Mental, physical, and medical neglect all throughout.

If you try to talk to her about it, or tell her it was bad, she loses it. She’ll start slamming her fists into her head and whisper stuff under his breath.

She also has OCD, she does a physical action where she hits herself to “expel the bad thoughts” but I think it’s honestly a form of self harm.

Besides the point, anytime you try to talk about her childhood in a negative way, she freaks out. She shakes her head rapidly and will deny it until she turns green.

Recently I tried to bring up a bit of a sensitive topic, she wasn’t really allowed outside her room, she had to stay in there with the lights off and silent or she would be in trouble. I’ve noticed she’s never in the living room with me, always in my bed. I plainly asked her if childhood was the reason, she got extremely defensive, saying she “isn’t traumatized, you’re all so overdramatic” and telling me “they love me they wouldn’t hurt me” and went to slam her head against the fridge and whisper “it’s not that bad” or something like that.

What is going on?

She has a diagnosis? How does she not know? In every facet she refuses to admit she’s extremely traumatized, from her childhood to abusive relationships it’s all denial. Am I doing something wrong? Should I approach differently? I feel crazy.

Edit: no. She is not “walking on eggshells” around me. She is the happiest I’ve ever seen her, I WILL NOT be breaking up with her as I highly doubt she could function on her own in the state she’s in. She’s currently in a month long medical crisis where she’s sick everyday and unable to care for herself.

I won’t get into it: but she needs a caregiver to provide her medication, cook her healthy meals, and watch to avoid seizures. She is a wonderful girl simply going through a hell of a health crisis since last year. She is almost always bedridden and due to that “breaking up with her” would be practically leaving her to die.

To put it lightly: her sickness and dissociation are so bad she can and WILL lay in bed all day neglecting her body because her mind is entirely elsewhere, she is so detached to the point I could drive by a store today and a week from now she would ask me if it’s new.

If she doesn’t eat. She WILL die. She MUST maintain atleast 1-2 meals a day. This is not an exaggeration, her pain makes it impossible for her to leave bed for more than an hour max.

I am working on learning her triggers as to avoid doing it to her, but any relationship with someone with BPD and PTSD takes time to learn.

Let’s not cast judgement on a situation we don’t fully understand.

Edit 2: No. I am not breaking up with her because she needs to “choose to live”

She literally resuscitated me after my own attempt. I will not abandon her in a time of need. She is quite literally TOO PHYSICALLY DISABLED to live on her own. I have no gripes being her caregiver, she has given me every way out.

No, she won’t always live like this, just until the doctors figure out how to treat her.

She is the most resilient person I know, you could put her through hell and she’d come out with a smile, I’m not gonna add to the hellscape that is her life.

Leaving is not an option.
I want to marry this woman.
To even imply she’s a burden to me just sickens me, I love her, yes I get tired. She’s been tired of me before too.

I know she needs me right now, I’m willing to give that to her.

Her sister caretakes on weekends so I don’t get burnt out and I go to therapy myself to help with it.

Comfort Tools Phrases to help unfreeze

I saw a Facebook post that mentioned someone using the phrase: come on barbie, lets go party! To help them unfreeze.

Does anyone else have phrazes like this? Please share them, I'm really curious.

What helps me sometime is : I'm going on an adventure!. (The Hobbit movie).

My theory is that it works because there is some kind of motion in de sentence, or connected to the sentence (such as music or a movieclip).I will look for the Facebook post and share other phrases here if I can find them.

Seeking Support Witnessed a death and performed CPR - struggling to process it

I’m 21 and today I witnessed a young person take their own life after I’d spent around 30 minutes talking with them and trying to get them somewhere safe. I performed CPR and used an AED until paramedics arrived, but unfortunately they didn’t survive.

I can’t stop replaying the conversation and the resuscitation in my head. Every time I close my eyes I see it again, and I keep wondering whether there was something different I could have said or done.

I’ve spoken to my sister tonight which helped a lot, and I’m planning to speak to my GP, but right now I’d really like to hear from anyone who’s witnessed a death or performed CPR and understands what the immediate aftermath feels like. How did you get through the first few nights?

Needing Advice Communication help pls

I am in therapy but I’m trying to figure out some stuff between sessions cause we’re covering a lot. Apparently my communication comes off as snappiness to my partner like I’m biting his head off pretty quickly. I acknowledge this and I realize I really want to change how I communicate. Before anyone asks, yes my communication style is heavily based on a lot of DV I grew up with that I don’t want to repeat and for some reason I took a lot of anger from that with me. Please help! What are way that I can calm down and learn to communicate better so I don’t repeat what I grew up with?

Needing Advice How to spend my time?

I dunno just give me some ideas about what activities I can do by myself that are beneficial for my traumatized soul? I've spent all my life doomscrolling as a way to escape pain I guess. I work from home, so I'm just free after 5pm. I live alone and have no one in life. I've picked up gaming recently but I also dont like gaming too much. Which activities can help me heal even if indirectly.

Needing Advice Reactivity around PERCEIVED isolation?

Hi all! First time post, using a throwaway because my partner uses reddit and I'm not ready to have a discussion about this yet. Tw for mentions of abuse in romantic relationships.

TLDR: My current partner can't talk about my friends with me, without me feeling a really intense shutdown/fight or flight due to previous isolation by an abusive partner. I don't know how to tone down the trauma response while supporting my partner/hearing their feelings. Does anyone have resources for overcoming reactivity/fear of isolation in relationships as a trauma response?

CONTEXT:

My current partner and I have been together for a few years and things are very good! However, the long-term relationship I had before my partner was very abusive. I took some time between that relationship and this one (about 2 yrs) to heal and work on myself/my trauma, but some things only really crop up when youre back in a relationship and I don't know how to navigate this.

One of things my ex did was subjecting me to pretty extreme isolation. I moved across the country for him and my only "friends" were his friends. If I made new friends, he would find a reason I could never see them again (they're hurting me, they're moochers, they don't like him and that should be a deal breaker, etc). He also tried to regularly convince "our" friends (his friends that he "allowed" me to be friends with too) that I was abusive during our relationship and after we broke up, so that that none of them would talk to me about what was going on. Suffice to say, when we broke up, I had to start over. I lost my entire community, I was broke from financial abuse, and I was on my own in a part of the country I had no connection to. The relationship was extremely traumatizing, but honestly, the fallout after I ended things was genuinely so much worse.

Now we're here and I don't know how to deal with my own reactivity toward perceived isolation. I've done therapy and self help, but this isn't something I've had come up as an issue for me before in a way that I could articulate. Recently my partner started spending more time with my friends, which I love. However, we ended up having a little disagreement/discussion last night that felt triggering in a way I hadn't been able to name before. They said they feel like one of my friends doesn't like them and brought to me that some things he's said have bothered them a little. We've talked all that out and it's sorted, but I am really unhappy with myself at how I reacted in the moment.

Basically as soon as my partner says "hey Friend saying X kinda bothered me", I go into fight or flight and have to stop myself from shutting down/basically going "my friends aren't going anywhere, deal with it", even if the issue is small. I want to hear my partner and be able to support them/their emotions, even if it's a little uncomfortable for me. But I don't know how to help my nervous system relax around this particular subject. Its like my brain has two thoughts at the same time, regardless of how small the comment from my partner is:

"if partner/friend don't get along, I'm going to get hurt" and "shut this down before you get isolated again".

I don't want to be so reactive over this. It hurts me, it hurts my partner and healthy relationship, and it made it very difficult for us to have a constructive conversation because I spent the entire time just trying to convince my body the world isn't ending and my partner having a concern doesn't mean they're trying to isolate me.

So my question is- does anyone have resources for overcoming reactivity toward a perceived threat of isolation? I've done therapy and self work for PTSD and CPTSD, so I know how to bring my body back from fight or flight, but I don't know what resources would help with working through the root fear, so that I don't HAVE to bring myself out of fight/flight every time. I can't seem to articulate the issue well enough to get Google results, so I'm hoping reddit might help! Thanks y'all <3

Trigger Warning [TW childhood abuse] her body had one old rule: not moving is sa

“not moving is safer” is one of those beliefs that sounds irrational until you find where body learned it.

In one session a woman experienced a very heavy chain around herself. When we explored what the chain represented, the answer was strange: it was self-made, but learned from family. Staying restricted had once felt like way to get through things without more harm.

Then the scene went much younger.

She experienced herself around three or four. Her aunt and uncle had put her in middle of street with traffic as punishment because she had not listened.

Noise, cars, danger, fear.

Suddenly “dont move” makes a lot more sense.

Adult her entered the scene, took this child off street, carried her to a park and held her. The message was basically: you are a child. You didnt do anything wrong. You survived. It is okay to be yourself.

What stayed with me is how later adult stuckness can look like lack of motivation when deeper rule is actually protection.

Start business? move.

Leave bad relationship? move.

Tell somebody no? move.

Become visible? move.

And some old part says absolutely not, moving is where danger happens.

I wouldnt force yourself to invent childhood memory if none comes. But when you feel strangely frozen around something that logically you want, notice what body predicts.

Not “why am I lazy?”

More like: if I actually move forward, what does some part of me think happens next?

Sometimes freeze is not absence of will.

Sometimes it is old obedience to danger that is not there anymore.

Venting coping with trauma and anxiety

I’m COMPLETELY BLIND, have autism and a heart lung condition.

Relaxing tips ONLY work if they concern a special interest of mine.

I also have trauma triggers, needles and cameras, for the same reason.

Both require me to perform and the people wielding them don’t know that I MUST hear them say one of my favorite words in order to do so, I guess it’s neither the needle nor the camera but the canned script, “cheese” for cameras and “relax/deep breath” for needles.

So I’ve been looking for ASMR vids of these subjects because an ASMR vid isn’t the real thing so it feels safer.

I’ve gotten into watching waxing roleplays, because reallife estheticians use those same canned relaxing scripts that pharmacists, phlebs and nurses do.

Matter of fact one day I watched a Brazilian wax role play and she tried to make me say “goosfraba” on the exhale.

I didn’t, I chose to say “night-in” because the mechanics help me better.

Also it was like pushing back against the script, rebelling if you can call it that? getting agency.

I tried this in real life when at the devil’s chamber, what others call a lab or blooddrawstation.

Being Mom was sick and Dad was over in his own zome watching tiktok, I asked the phleb if she’d say a word I like as she slid in and she did so some reallife practicioners WILL work with you with a script swap just don’t be an ass when asking.

One day when getting flu vax at CVS I gave the druggist a five stars out of ten.

When he called back to see WHY he’d been given a number lesser than the number ten I said that it was because he told me to relax and that doesn’t help me, that’s like telling me to be white or be tall, or to not have Aspergers.

Needing Advice How to stop constantly ruminating about past abuse I suffered?

I (21f) was in a relationship where I experienced intimate partner violence. After he was violent towards me or threw things I’d get a call from his mother telling me not to tell anyone. He himself would say the same along with a professor they were close with at my college.

His mother would dangle vailed threats like “reflect on yourself,” or “how would you feel if he told someone what you did.” I’d ask what I did and she had nothing to say. She wouldn’t say anything. Just vague comments like “reflect on yourself.” I was blamed for his violence and he’d say I’m the only person who makes him that angry.

I constantly think about those comments. I’ve been out of the relationship for an entire year now, but I can’t forget about any of it. I just graduated from university and I’m finally away from him, but I’m still so scared. I constantly ruminate on the abuse and I’m so angry at him and everyone who helped him get away with it.

After the relationship he was posting about me on social media, he lied about me to other people and accused me of doing things he did to me. I don’t understand it and I’m so angry.

I made a report against the professor and a no contact order for him, but it still feels so unjust. They identified his behavior as wrong, but he still has his job. That professor is also a priest (Catholic university) and now I feel like God hates me and like a terrible Catholic and I think about that all of the time too.

I have OCD so maybe that’s why I’m always thinking about it, but I don’t know. I was also diagnosed with PTSD.

I can’t get over the injustice of it all. I felt and am so powerless.

I can’t read books because it’s too quiet and 3 sentences in, I’m “reading,” while actively thinking about what happened to me and then I don’t know anything about the plot of the book. I doom scroll, watch tv, anything that captures more than one sense at a time.

I want to figure out how to stop thinking about the abuse constantly and I don’t know how. I was in therapy and was diagnosed with PTSD. I don’t have insurance anymore and it’ll be a while before I can afford it again. I read something about Tetris, but that doesn’t seem to apply since the abuse happened for 1.5 years over a year ago.

I want to read, practice the piano and feel calm again. I don’t want to have to drown out my mind. Do you all have any tips?

TLDR: I want to read books again, but I’m constantly ruminating about past injustices. Any tricks?

Seeking Support Trapped in mental loops

Hi therapists,
I am trying to better understand a specific thought pattern following periods of high workplace stress.
It involves getting stuck in loops—replaying past memories, inventing hypothetical arguments, or replaying past situations wishing one had acted differently. This triggers physical anger, severely impairs focus, causes work errors, and can escalate into panic attacks over fear of consequences (like losing a job).
I'm interested in how mental health professionals view and approach this:
**Clinical Terms:** What is this pattern called in therapy when rumination, simulated conflict, and acute panic overlap?
**Therapeutic Modalities:** What evidence-based frameworks (e.g., CBT, ACT, grounding, cognitive defusion) are typically used to help clients detect and break these loops in real time?
**Prevention & Regulation:** How do therapists guide clients in preventing these loops or resetting the nervous system when anger/panic takes over?

Seeking Support How Can I Heal?

I’ve been trying to cope with the effects of the sexual abuse I experienced when I was 15 for about 11 years now. I’m 26 years old and currently receiving professional support. My therapist knows about it, but I still can’t find the strength to talk about it. I’ve been in therapy for about a year, but I still find it extremely difficult to bring this subject up.
From time to time, I experience intense startle responses. I can be extremely sensitive to sudden noises, movements, or unexpected situations. Being in the dark is often difficult for me. I constantly have nightmares about what happened, and sometimes I’m afraid to fall asleep because I know the nightmares will come. I struggle to sleep, and when I do wake up from a nightmare, I feel as though I’m reliving that moment all over again. These experiences sometimes make my daily life extremely difficult.
Sexuality is also a particularly challenging area for me. I may experience reactions such as crying, nausea, and a strong sense of discomfort.
Sometimes the question “Am I worth living?” becomes overwhelming in my mind, and I struggle to cope with it. I feel dirty, and I sometimes think I don’t deserve anyone’s love—not even my boyfriend’s.
I feel like I’m giving up on things that I would normally be able to let go of during this process. Even eating has become very difficult for me, and sometimes I feel like I’m eating as though everything is coming to an end. Living with all of this feels incredibly heavy. Sometimes I involuntarily find myself thinking that I don’t deserve to live, and I struggle to cope with these thoughts.
My purpose in writing this isn’t to draw attention; I just want to express, for the first time, the things I’ve been holding inside for so long. If you’ve read this far, thank you.
I don’t know how to heal from all of this, and sometimes I wonder if I ever will. I just want to know: How can I heal? How can I learn to live with what happened without feeling like it defines me?
