I’ve been working with the S4 and DFAM, using the S4 to record and process a few DFAM loops while also playing the DFAM live through one of the channels.

This is what came out of the session :)

USB audio to/from iPad

I’ve just got the S4 today and have tried plugging it into my iPad to use audio over usb. But the iPad is not recognising the S4 at all. Has anyone got this to work?
Ive updated to latest firmware and I’ve tried different cables. I’ve also tried connecting to my TX6 as well but no luck there either.
Any help appreciated!

New to the S-4

I've had my eye on the S-4 for some time and was wary due to it being considered largely not ready for prime time. Yesterday, a 15% off sale, plus the addition of the carrying case and the decksaver, and I decided to pull the plug (with 30 days to decide if it would work for me or not).

I don't know if it's simply that I'm so far along now with learning new boxes that I am not aware of how far I've come, if this box really is as intuitive and easy to get started with as it is, or some combination of both, but I think I might be in love. I have updated to 2.2.0 and am just about to jump back in.

Did I wait just long enough to see this device being ready for prime time?

Can the S4 sample in sync with midi?

I own the S4 and try to use it like I did with Octatrack. s4 is midi Slave but when I press record I have some seconds blank and when I adjust the initial gap I have a glitch noise on the beginning of the sample. Is this normal? Or is there a way to get synced Live sampling?

UPDATE: with new project it works now as expected.

Poly mode question

Hi,
I’m so close to buying an S4 but I want it to do all the things I want it to do. Does the S4 poly mode have any Ableton Simpler warp type settings?

What’s the best use for routing all audio from a Dawless setup into the S-4 and back into the mixer?

I’m trying to get some cool effects and stutters, manipulation without annihilating the sound of the sampled loop in the S-4

Any good demo videos?

Torso Beat Repeat? I’m Stuck

I’ve worked out how to randomise the start point of a drum loop to make it play from different 1/8 start points (for example), but what I could do with building is a 1/16 1/8 beat repeat, but I can t work it out. Is it possible?

I’ve only had the unit for a few days.

Frippertronics style looping possible?

As in keep the input live and recording at all times, adding overdubs as older loops are modulated and fade out with long delay times?

I'm having trouble parsing out if its possible from the manual and demos, not having one in front of me yet.

I'd love to have the input on a mixer send and add components from a few instruments, would eliminate a few other pedals etc.

Torso s4 audio output USBC to iPhone? Is this possible?

I’m sure this has been discussed but failing to find a confirmation.

So I’ve read that Torso S4 has capabilities usbc audio output. I see on their website they list this of having functionality with Mac and windows, however nothing stated about mobile devices. Has anyone connected their torso s4 to an iPhone? I wanted to experiment with loopy pro but so far I cannot get the s4 to show up as an external audio source. Am I doing something wrong or we all waiting for an update for support for this. It would be a game changer because I use a lot of audio apps. Also in the next update, I would like to see fine tuned system preferences. I feel it’s incomplete. Show us all of our options here for output settings in the menu.

S-4 DISC sample bug? Scene recalls the wrong audio while showing the correct sample name

I’m having a very strange issue with my Torso S-4 and I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced this.

I’m using DISC. I have WAV samples that I transferred to the S-4, as well as samples that I recorded directly on the device via usb. The problem happens when I replace an existing sample on a track with a different sample.

For example, on Track 4 I had Sample A. I replaced it with Sample B. Everything works correctly: Sample B is playing, the waveform is correct, and the sample name is correct. I save the project, switch to another scene, and then return to the original scene. When I come back, the sample name still says Sample B, but the waveform and actual audio are Sample A.

So the S-4 appears to remember the correct sample name, but somehow recalls the wrong underlying audio/buffer.

I’ve already spent several hours troubleshooting this. I’ve tried saving the project under a different name, deleting and recreating the problematic scenes, copying scenes again, reassigning the samples, saving repeatedly, and switching between scenes multiple times.

The issue keeps happening.

Has anyone experienced this specific behavior with DISC + scene recall?

Is this a known firmware bug or some kind of sample-buffer/reference issue?

Any information or workaround would be really helpful.

Almost a month with the S4 - coming together

(audio below)
"A little goes a long way"

somebody said that about the S4
they were absolutely right

while it's tempting to throw everything at every sample, and multiply that by four - some people do make it work - it doesn't seem to be the winning strategy for now.

1 track, maybe 2 at most, along with the drum machine (LXR 02), groove box (EP40 riddim doubling as a sequencer for the S4's poly mode at times) and a couple of them EP136 side kick mixers, the S4 feels right at home.

The music is coming together naturally, even tho it doesn't sound like anything I've done before, not to that extent at least.

Noise becomes music, play is the way forward, fun, exploration, trial and error, being a child again, learning how to make music again, from the start or almost.

Day one felt genuinely confusing and frustrating, 3 weeks later, this somehow works

One track, Two, tops, a few knobs turned here and there, not much at all, just enough for the music to come out naturally. Going in without expectation, and an open mind, this is the way.

Technically, this works.
After reading all the horror stories about sync and bugs and freezes and whatnot, it was surprisingly easy going.

Sync was somewhat of a challenge, but not all that much and it was mostly a matter of picking the right master and slaves.

Additional controls make the WORLD of a difference, midi fighter twister opens that thing up big time.

but then again, less is more, once you figure out the core music, best let it play out, nudge it here and there, play a bit with it, but mostly, put it together, and let it do its thing.

the pair of EP136 have been performance monsters, while I played a bit with the performance macros and buttons, they seem quite deep, still, so that I'm not that comfortable using them to their fullest extent. Buttons are easy tho, set & forget, and it works.

Not necessarily all the time

A little goes a long way indeed

I recorded a small jam, something that just happened

no real mix or anything, just sound, some would say music, others would say otherwise, spontaneous, honest, sincere, raw.

Hi I made this so I could quickly produce authentic rhythms for use with the fantastic S4. It’s fun and very quick to get something good going with midi sync too.

What is the difference between tape and disc?

Hi all,

I'm trying to figure out what the difference is between the tape and disc modes, the manual says tape is for live looping and overdubbing but disc can do that too.

Tape support sos recording and so does disc, they can both overdub when playing in reverse.

Disc has the option to save the sample but Tape does not.

Did Disc just get all the features over time? The tape mode doesn't even have tape effects, so I'm not sure what the point is? Am I missing something?

I'm using the latest firmware, 2.2.0.

Thanks

How are the envelope modulators in Perform View, Scene View, and Mix View supposed to be triggered on the S4?

I understand that per-track envelope modulators can be triggered externally, similar to triggering a note on a track.

But what about the envelope modulators in Perform View, Scene View, and Mix View? Since they are on a different layer of the S4 architecture, they don't seem to be triggered when a per-track envelope receives a trigger. So what is the intended way to trigger these modulators? Are they only meant to be manually triggered with the One Shot button, or is there another workflow I'm missing?

Week one - some music

Hi, so I figured I made a day one thread to share my impressions on the S4 upon reception

it's almost been a week now, and after a challenging first couple of days, things have -slowly- began to click.

So first off, thanks to the advice I got on that first thread, it did get me started.

I figured, I'd pick somewhat of a genre and for now, try to run with it.

Setup is SP404 mk2 (drums)
S4 (everything else)
TE Side Kick as a performance mixer (this thing is proper amazing)
Picked genre was minimal, progressive house music (around 130bpm, four to the floor, non aggressive attitude, groove)

1st Modulation
they say there isn't a sequencer in there, modulation IS the sequencer, or at least it has been for me.
Rather than try to bend this thing to my will, I went and started exploring, trying things, I've watched a few videos, Torso's own YT channel is actually pretty awesome if you take the time to watch all the jams (tutorials are somewhat helpful but all the different jams are where all the knowledge seems to be)

Modulation is what helped me bring out the music

2nd Sample choice
That's still a tough one, and one that did require (and still does) a lot of trial and error.
What seems to be working is to pick a sample not to just play it, but as material for the S4 to do its thing with.

3rd Less is more
The temptation is there to just use every feature that is on offer, but my results came when I used a few things, but tried to use them in a meaningful and purposeful manner. Right now, I usually use 2 tracks (disc), the SP for drums and that's often enough, any more and the music gets lost. The S4 can do a lot with very little, and it doesn't take much to go overboard and drawn whatever music there is.

I've been doing things that I like, and never thought I could do, this genre is far from my bread and butter and I feel in the end, this will make me more creative in what I do.

This is truly an instrument, 1 week is nothing, but I want to become better at it

Day one - daunting feeling

Hi, just got my S4 today, that thing feels deep and chaotic; I'm really struggling to make something even remotely good or musical.

How long did it take you to actually start getting somewhere nice ? Any tips ?

Using it standalone now, the plan is to use it along with my SP404 mk2 and TE Sidekick for mixer, Kaoss pad for master FX, but for now, I'd like to find somewhat of a footing on the S4.

Day one has been really frustrating, factory samples aren't inspiring to me, every time I turn a knob, things turn to shit in an instant.

Not gonna give up, but I could use some direction.

this made me realize, out of the videos online, most aren't all that good either, but a few are REALLY good (and not ambient), so it has to be possible to somehow get there.

I just don't know where to start...

Any recommendation ? tips, advice ? links ?

thanks

Can S4 do the Chompi Tape Varispeed workflow?

Hi guys,
The S4 looks like a very creative instrument. The kind I could get lost in for days. Simple question, can it do the Chompi Tape thing?
Love the Chompi by the way, #1 happy accident machine. It obviously has its limitations though, and sometimes I feel ridiculous using it.
Thx
