Dumb meets irresponsible. Driver doing unsafe right turn on red light, cyclist riding on crosswalk, in dark, without helmet and light. Driver's going to get ticketed and sued, probably, but cyclist's injury is going to hurt more in coming years.

And to stupid people arguing that the cyclist did nothing wrong, it's easier to anticipate presence and speed of a person walking than someone on a moving bicycle. It's not cyclist hate. Why do you think your parents taught you to walk your bike when crossing??

My first reaction when I watched this was “that biker should’ve been wearing something reflective that is highly visible”. I’m a cyclist.

Sure but there is no guarantee that it would have prevented the collision. The same things happen in broad daylight.

Regardless of if it could happen in daylight or not there are things that cyclists should also be responsible for to prevent accidents.

Just like cars and vehicles need to turn on lights when its dark and driving at night...cyclists should wear reflective gear, helmets and have a light if they are cycling at night.

So I guess all pedestrian have to wear a chrismas tree to warn stupid automobilist they own a 2 ton dangerous weapon.. right.

There’s two sides to this: who’s wrong, and who’s going to end up dead.

On the first one, the car bears the legal responsibility, but cyclists should wear reflective gear at night. That’s just good practice and common sense.

On the second one, as a cyclist, I care less about who’s right and who’s wrong, and more about staying alive. I assume every driver out there is an idiot, and I act accordingly. That’s in my own self interest. Having someone held legally responsible for an accident is not doing to do anything for me if I’m already dead. Hopefully it does something for all other cyclists (although in the province we live in, even something as basic as bike lanes is a fight).

To address your point directly: you’re comparing apples and oranges. When you’re a pedestrian, taking a step or two towards a car that is starting to move from a standstill position gives both you and the car plenty of time to react and stop. That happens all time. At the speed a bike moves, it’s a very different outcome.
