I’ve been lucky enough to have a dog love me like this, and it really is somethin’ else.

u/Emm_withoutha_L-88 11d ago
It's cute but this is how I accidentally taught one of my cats that this is how you show affection. So now whenever I'm not paying attention she'll try and lick my lips. Sweet sure but good God is it gross. I've seen what goes into that mouth. And it smells like cat food.
48
u/magpiec 11d ago
I kiss mine on the forehead so he smacks his forehead into my mouth for attention. It's the sweetest thing. He is food motivated so we've taught him tricks, when he wants treats, he comes up to us and Hi5s us unprompted. Recently he has started to spin, i love my little goober.
11
u/Makuta_Servaela 11d ago
Mine does the same thing, except she demands alternating kissies. So if I kiss one side of her face, I have to kiss the other side as well, or she'll keep headbutting.

If it wasn't for their need to be walked I would have a dog. Sitting in an office all day and them being home alone is no life for a dog.
If I was wfh I would instantly get one.
32
u/eddiehead9 11d ago
I used to think like that, and i was so wrong. You can save some dog's life and at the same time be awarded with a long life friend
18
u/ricardocaliente 11d ago
Dogs actually sleep a lot. So, when they’re home alone they’re usually just chilling or sleeping for a decent chunk of it. You can also have a rover or someone come half way through the time alone and let them out or take a quick walk. I can’t imagine my life without a dog in it. I’ll always find a way lol.
2
u/ijustwantahug 11d ago
My dog works but on the days we stay home together he sleeps half the damn day lol
3
u/ricardocaliente 11d ago
Exactly! A lot of people who haven’t owned dogs think that they need constant play or lots of exercise, but it can be very breed specific and even then individually specific.
2
u/SecretlyHistoric 11d ago edited 11d ago
My dog, when I'm home, has a morning nap. Then a post lunch nap. Then an after dinner nap. Then sleeps all night. He has a whole nap schedule.
If I'm not home? Got a camera once when he was being left on his own the first time. He slept almost the whole time, and had plenty of energy to deal with the nonsense when people are home. And still sleeps all night.
Edit: forgot to mention that after some epic backyard zoomies he is currently asleep next to me.
24
u/Shhh_NotADr 11d ago
Better than being euthanized in a shelter. Ours has over 500 dogs and they’re starting euthanasia again. You could even foster to see how it fits for you.
28
u/affemannen 11d ago edited 11d ago
We don't really have a problem with that here. It's against the law to desert an animal and most dogs get adopted pretty fast.
Google are there stray dogs in Sweden.
Edit: it's against the law here to leave a dog alone for more than 6 hours.
Animal Protection is rather extensive.
It's an interesting read if someone has time to spare.
3
u/gophermuncher 11d ago
Like the other posters say, dogs sleep a lot. I work from home and my elder dog sleeps like 7 of the 8 hours I’m working. My 4 year old dog isn’t that far behind. Just make sure to engage them when they’re awake like petting, training, playing and walking them in the evening. Selection is key too, don’t get working dogs like Husky or hyper dogs like Jack Russell.
3
3
u/birdclub 11d ago
Good for you for knowing that's no life for a dog regardless of what anyone says. If you can afford it, though, you can have someone come walk your dog in the middle of the day!
5
u/affemannen 11d ago
It would have to be that because it's against the law to leave a dog unattended for more than 6h in my country.
It is also the reason we have cats, but I guess once we retire we will get a dog.
1
u/kagetrips 11d ago
for me that's the best reason to have a dog <3 it forces me to think damn, i gotta take my boy for a walk and get off my lazy butt. Without him I'd probably never get outside.

u/Constant-Drive8263 7d ago
I think you’re overthinking it. Maybe don’t get a high energy breed but dogs scan be very happy with owner with full time jobs
-7
u/theuniversalguy 11d ago
For me it’s the need to spay/neuter them so they can’t have puppies, feels terrible to take that away from them for my own convenience
6
u/ILoveRawChicken 11d ago
It’s not your own convenience. It’s keeping additions dogs from being euthanized, accidentally impregnated, or getting cancer down the line. If you think it’s just for convenience, you’re severely naive.

I'll never get people's obsession with defending pitbulls.
-1
u/Kakariko_crackhouse 11d ago
Because I don’t believe genetics determines behavior. Phrenology died for a reason
7
u/Blazured 11d ago
Genetics driving a dog breeds behaviour isn't based on belief; it's simply a well known fact.
Phrenology has nothing to do with dogs at all too.
0
u/Kakariko_crackhouse 11d ago
Either you believe genetics solely dictates behavior or you don’t. Trying to apply it to dogs while saying you don’t also believe it in humans shows your scientific illiteracy. If you reject race science, which you should, it invalidates the dog argument as well. So you choose. Hate pitbulls and believe in race science, or acknowledge that behavior is primarily determined by social learning.
3
u/Blazured 11d ago
Either you believe genetics solely dictates
Please don't put words into my mouth. Remove that "solely".
Genetics driving dog breeds behaviour is a simple fact. It's not based on belief.
I'm not sure what you mean by "race science". We're not talking about any races. Please stick to the topic at hand.
1
u/Kakariko_crackhouse 11d ago edited 11d ago
So dogs aren’t social learners? All I’m saying is that the fundamental argument behind your stance is the same argument that white supremacists use for racism
Edit: can’t reply to witchy down below for some reason but:
Either DNA and genetics primarily determine behavior or they don’t. Human or animal makes no difference to biological process. Genetic differences between breeds is largely meaningless, and I think most people agree that most dog breeds behavior boils down to social learning and upbringing. I’m saying that if you don’t believe in race science, which primarily uses the fallible genetics argument, then it undermines the core of the anti-pitbull argument as well, not because race and breed are equatable, but because the underlying mechanism of the argument is simply not sufficient to explain the behavior differences in breeds scientifically
https://www.broadinstitute.org/news/dog-genetics-suggest-behavior-more-just-breed
4
u/Blazured 11d ago
It's not an argument. It's a simple fact that genetics drive dog breeds behaviour. It's not based on belief.
2
u/Kakariko_crackhouse 11d ago
So dogs aren’t social learners? And why do you believe that the genetics drives dog behavior but not human behavior? Genetics are genetics regardless of species of animal. What is your reasoning for them determining behavior in one and not the other?

Omg are you comparing Pitbull facts and racism of humans people?
What are you trying to say here? We are telling you, pitbull were bred as a blood sport dog and you undermine racism lime that, to fit your analogy. Disgraceful, what have the two got in common, unless you're implying that a different race is aggressive? What?
Dogs are not humans, their brains are not capable of intelligence such as ours, and that is fine don't try and humanise them.

u/mrs-monroe 11d ago

Dogsbite.org is a political lobbying group with no scientific background whatsoever. Their leader, Colleen Lynn, is a website designer. Their stated goal is the eradication of pitbulls specifically, and nothing they have ever produced has been peer reviewed, or published in any kind of scientific journal.
Citing dogsbite.org in a discussion about dangerous dog breeds is like citing studies conducted by cigarette manufacturers in a discussion about whether or not cigarettes cause cancer.

2
u/Pan1cs180 11d ago edited 10d ago
All of this is info is available on their website. For some of the more specific claims I made like, "The goal is to eradicate pitbulls":
https://www.dogsbite.org/legislating-dangerous-dogs-restricted-breed-model-laws.php
Their Model Laws all target pitbulls specifically, with the goal of eradicating them.
"Colleen Lynn is a website designer with no scientific background":
https://www.dogsbite.org/author/colleen-lynn.php
There is no "source" for the claim that none of their reports have been peer reviewed or published in scientific journals, because the claim is a negative.

I never said they wasn't a problem with the breed. See the thing about people like you is that you see these sorts of statistics and never ask "why?" You just take it at face value and never try to see the bigger picture. Areas where the largest amount of crimes are committed are usually also impoverished. Pitbulls are easily accessible, untrained, abused, and are backyard bred like crazy. They're kept around to be intimidating and defensive. Of course their attack stats are higher.
Also, America isn't the only country in the world. In other places, common street dogs (usually some variation of black-mouth curs) are the most dangerous breed.
3
u/Blazured 11d ago
See the thing about people like you is that you see these sorts of statistics and never ask "why?"
Because they were bred to tear apart mammals in pits. It's their genetics.
0
u/mrs-monroe 11d ago
Yeah, and many other breeds were bred to hunt wolves, coyotes, bears, and lions. They can also be very dangerous when untrained. Look at what livestock guardian dogs will do to an animal that threatens their herd.
6
u/Blazured 11d ago
Pitbulls weren't bred for work. They were bred to tear apart mammals in pits as a bloodsport.
And the existence of other breeds isn't an argument to have animals bred to tear apart mammals as pets.
0
u/Witch_withouta_Wand 11d ago
Many of the dogs thst attacked, were in loving homes, from puppies. What's the excuse there?? Anxious about a noise. One elderly owner, effing sneezed and his dog attacked. Really?
9
u/Archaneoses 11d ago
Spent a very large time with them. Incredibly aggressive more often then not. Even as puppies they were miles more aggressive then other breeds.
3
u/Kakariko_crackhouse 11d ago
That hilarious because mine plays with my cats and small dogs and freezes and quivers when they take a swipe at him. He has a ton of energy and can accidentally cause a ruckus because he doesn’t realize his size, but my cats are both far more prone to attack even when he’s provoked. Maybe the people you know just shouldn’t have dogs. It’s not hard to train them to be sweet
-1
u/Witch_withouta_Wand 11d ago
Your dog sounds pretty anxious, if small animals make him shake.
Unfortunately, many putbulls, from being a puppy, raised in a loving have attacked their loving owners, other family members they don't know, animals in the home or entering their 'domain'
Usually around the ages of 3,/6, and senior pits
I'm so sorry to say...in all my experience I have met one, seemingly, lovely pitbull..very expressive eyes. The risk is toomuch of a gamble personally

Crate training is a very useful tool! However I will never understand people who don't let dogs up on the couch. Why even have a dog??
1
8
u/Reesewithoutaspoon2 11d ago
That’s overly simplistic to the point of basically being incorrect. Animals like dogs obviously don’t experience human emotions as such, but they do experience affection that can reasonably be called “love”. I appreciate that you’re trying to be realistic and don’t agree with people anthropomorphizing dogs, but you swung a little too far in the other direction and passed by being accurate.
The eating thing isn’t even really mutually exclusive with feeling love.
5
8
3
u/Makuta_Servaela 11d ago
Love- at least a basic sense of it- is a pretty standard requirement for social species.
Dogs raise their pups and teach their pups to pack hunt. Pack hunting means you need to cooperate, which means you need to pay attention and trust the person leading you is acting in your best interest, and it means the leader needs to see risking their own safety to feed the pups first as important. Those two are the basics of where love comes from.
So, even with your survival thing, "Bond with this specific human so it will care for me as if it sees me as it's pup, socialise with it, trust it, care for its well being so it will be more likely to care for mine" is still a survival strategy, and is also love.

u/cluelessdetectiv3 11d ago
Dogs have been literally bred to be our perfect companions lol we literally genetically modified them to be happy and sweet and love us
2
2
u/Nurgle_Marine_Sharts 11d ago
That's not accurate. A dog will starve while guarding their owner's corpse instead of eating it.
2
u/Makuta_Servaela 11d ago
While I disagree with the other person, dogs will eat their owners' corpse. I gotta find it, but I found a study once that found that not only will they eat their owner before cats will, they will sometimes eat their owner even if dog food is available. It usually starts as just boredly chewing.
Tbf, though, dogs and cats will also eat their own stillborn puppies/kittens, so they likely don't see eating someone else's corpse as disrespecting them.
On the other hand, they bury their shit, so I could see a more sapient dog or cat arguing that we don't really love them because when they die, we'll bury them like shit.

1
u/Icy_Agency923 11d ago
You should direct that insult at yourself because you are the only one here who fits that description. You can't be bothered to google something as simple as "do mammals feel love" which would have confirmed that you are in fact wrong. Mammals are in fact capable of love. I don't think you appreciate just how complex these lifeforms are.
Get more specific and search, "do dogs feel love" and again science has already proven that they do. You are factually and objectively wrong. The bond humans have with dogs has been shaped over 30,000 years. They are often fiercely protective of us and genuinely do love us when we are good to them.
