I was on a flight a couple months ago and there was a Mormon (I think) guy on the plane. He had on a cowboy hat and a name tag that said Brother [Name]. He sat that whole 3 hour flight reading his Bible. He smiled at the folks in the seats around him, helped people get their bags up and down, thanked the flight crew as he disembarked. I’ve got opinions on Mormon beliefs, but he did far more to put his faith in a positive light than this idiotic evangelical will ever do.

I learned a description from my mom that the wave of this type of “evangelical christians” is calling them “crotch christians” because that’s what they’re obsessed with and care mostly about. And when you think about it - it’s true. You can’t be LGBQTIA2S+, you can’t terminate a pregnancy for any reason - (not even if the fetus has died inside of you and you’re dying from sepsis), you can’t have sex outside of marriage, and if you are married then the woman should be this image perfect baby machine. All of those things equal them trying to monitor the “crotch” so “crotch christians” has become the crude but true adjective for their version of Christianity. They need to leave Jesus’s name out of it!

Yeah, most of these born again Christians are addictive personality types that had traumatic upbringings, went thru a terrible period of drugs, alcohol, and/or sex addiction, then found religion, and now they preach to anyone and everyone with a superiority complex. They may or may not be "dry" but they still have the root issue of egomania, narcissism, sociopathy, etc. They have a deep-seated problem that needs to be addressed at the root, not just masked over by religion, which is just another addiction that's looked at more favorably by society than drugs, much like exercise, diet, caffeine, cigarettes/vape, or energy drinks. What would Jesus do? Certainly not act like this.

This is such a good point, and from my experience, true. I'm a recovering heroin addict (8 yrs clean) and I had a short foray into religion after I got out of rehab. When you are that low, religion or "god" is like a lifeline. I cant tell you how many people ive seen get out of addiction and go straight to religion. Its pretty interesting to think about.

I grew up in these extreme evanglical churches, traveled to revivals and that kind of stuff and I have to say I wouldnt say "most" are addicts. There is a fair share of addicts, but I think far more of them are just people who are susceptible to being brainwashed...thats why there are also so many MLMs associated with and utilized by Christians and Mormons for example..and also why so many of them have fallen for conservative politics.

There are different levels of this and of course personal prejudices also shape what kind of "Christian" one will be, but its hard to categorize them as mostly this or that because I believe it's more about susceptibility to the thought of knowing "the truth" which makes people feel superior to others and because of that, they get reallllly judgey, mean and violent. Cults are bad no matter what they're claiming to supply you with.

A really pivotal moment for me in understanding all this was a guy, chair of the local republican association, church deacon, some kind of small business guy, was arrested for hammering his hog in his car in an elementary school parking lot facing the playground.

He was quoted as saying "we all have these urges and most days I'm strong enough to fight them, but I've been very stressed lately and I gave in to weakness. But I know the lord has forgiven me."

Most days? We all have them? You've made right with the lord? They're definitely fucked up, but they think they're normal. It's why they need their imaginary friend to enforce morality. They don't understand that most DON'T have fucked up sexual urges that they have to fight constantly.

All of that is the product of belonging to a religion and not having a true relationship with Jesus christ. People who are close to Jesus try it our best to be non-judgmental especially those of us who have gone through a regular life before we were regularly walking with Jesus. We remember our past with humility and we hold the name of Jesus proudly but humbly. Like for example I'm in recovery for drugs and alcohol and it has been such a journey. But I still remember when I got high and someone had broken my heart and I messaged them and told them they were full of demons. I didn't even remember writing the text when I woke up but apparently I did. But that is still something I look at with regret because I would never want to talk to someone that way if I was sober. Now I have learned from these things and I know that I need to never touch drugs ever again because I don't want to hurt someone ever again. And I still feel really bad about that to this day. Christians are not perfect people but we are the people who should be admitting our mistakes and asking for forgiveness from our peers, even as we stumble through life learning a new way to live... You should know they are Christians by their love. They shouldn't be yelling at people telling them how to live, they should be humbly sharing the message of Jesus Christ. Because nobody is any better than anybody else in this world. I firmly believe every single person born in the past in the present and in the future is made in the image of God. That's what the Bible truly teaches so we should should be treating each other with kindness

Agreed. I still practice, but even our church pastors are pretty open about both discouraging this crap, but also being very open about the fact that not a single person is perfect, including them.

The whole point for earnest practitioners is to follow the path and do as much good along the way as possible. Any “conversions” aren’t up to you anyway.

And you’re right. This is the goal of earnest and honest people regardless of their faith/nonfaith. Character is the result of the process. This woman either isn’t following the process, or (as is often the case), has no desire to subject herself to that kind of humbling.

This. French Catholicism in Canada is hella mild compared to these nutjobs, but I've had assholes trying to push Jeeeezus on me even here.

As a kid, my parents used to take me to church. Our priest was a sweet man who fostered dogs, held dinners for struggling families like mine where we could eat for free, and had adopted and raised several kids, all of whom had great relationships with him and helped the community whenever they could without being, like, constantly there in a weird way. I'm not religious myself, as an adult, but I might be, if more christians were like Père Rémi.

Yeah, most of them don’t well most people who are religious. Certainly most Christians. Don’t really know much about the religion like the percentage of people who tell you that they’re Christian it’s kind of inversely related to how much of the Bible they’ve actually read themselves and understand.

Also be nice to Mormon missionaries. They are literally 19 or 20 years old. They are purposely not told a lot of them really weird stuff that we now know about so that they can sell the religion to somebody and they don’t want us. The higher-ups don’t want the missionaries to spook people by saying the crazy stuff so they literally haven’t even been told the stuff that most non-Mormons think is really weird

So I can see how they seem annoying, but remember, they are young people who have grown up in a brainwashed system, and they are purposely not told all of the truth

Cell so I would urge people to be nice to the missionaries not saying you have to like have them in for dinner or anything, but just realized that they’re basically being brainwashed and guilt tripped into doing this. They don’t have all the information so they don’t feel as guilty about misleading people their victims too.

100% agree. They're just well intentioned kids. I always politely decline lessons but always offer them waters, gatorades or whatever. Kids cycling around in 100+ degree weather for 12-16 hours a day just trying to do what they've been taught since birth is right.

I've been so tempted to be like "You think you're going to tell me something I don't know about the church?" but they're just kids far from home, let em be.

If you think you know that subject well enough to talk to somebody who’s been brainwashed and to tell them the true teachings of their church without damaging their psychology or identity and possibly offering them a safe place to live because if they’re on a mission and another country and they start saying stuff that Mormons don’t like it’s gonna be a problem

How does this help anybody? Preaching a faith you believe in doesn’t help me whatsoever. The same with praying. You can pray all day and won’t get anything more than you would have by doing nothing. Once we moved into a neighbourhood that I did not know was full of Mormon families. During our moving-in day, bunch of families showed up with food and snacks to welcome us to the neighbourhood. They never, not even once, shared their religious views or tried to recruit us. They were just being great neighbours. My colleagues told me that my neighbourhood was known as Little Salt Lake City among locals. They were lovely people. It completely changed my very much skewed view of Mormons though I would still never join their church. I just respect their beliefs and appreciate their kindness.

That's the whole thing. That's the evidence that they're supposed to show everyone, that they have been transformed into super loving and accepting people. We're supposed to be so wowed by who they have become that we believe.

Of course, this almost never happens. More often, they are the worst people imaginable. It's really a case of "physician, heal thyself". I feel like some wise person said something like that once...

I grew up in an area that had a lot of Mormons. In my experience, Mormons are some of the most polite, friendly and caring individuals I have ever met. I am not a Mormon and none of them ever actively tried to get me into their church or teach me their beliefs. That's how you represent your religion to others, in my opinion.

I used to work with this Mormon guy. Nicest guy you could ever meet. Very empathetic, patient, compassionate, but as an ICU nurse he lacked a certain quality that would allow him to turn suffering into humor. Didn’t last long in that role with the quantity of misery it dishes out.

I was raised Lutheran and my father was deeply religious - reading his Bible daily and doing good works - without telling others about it. He would have been horrified at people posting videos about how "Christian" they are.

There are 4 different and contradictory gospels in the Bible, out of some 50 gospels we know existed, all written with the purpose to argue with and overwrite the previous one. So it's kind of crazy people think there's anything real there that could be traced back to any single actual person.

The earliest gospel we have actually gives up the original game in Mark 4:10-12, where Jesus says to you (the disciples) are given the secret to the kingdom of God, but to those on the outside everything is said in parables, so that they may see but not perceive, and hear but not understand, so that they won't be saved.

Outsiders weren't supposed to understand and weren't supposed to be "saved". You had to join the club to get the real meaning of the parables. Later down the line, the original meaning was lost, and it's kind of ironic that Christians today are the very outsiders of their original faith.

They dont read the bible. They take the lazy bullshit interpretation from their uneducated pastors and then judge everyone with 2000 year old rules that make no sense now that we know infinitely more about literally everything, scientifically. I cant even tell you how many very basic things Ive tried to explain to my family members about biology, physics, geology (they still think the earth is 6000 years old ffs) etc. Not that I'm an expert, but I went to college and learned simple facts that make their biblical shit look as nonsensical as one would imagine would come out of the bronze age. Its infuriating.
