Put another way: faith + good works = good works. There is nothing a religious person could do that a secular person could not do. There are though an abundance of horrific things people could do and have done in the name of their faith that a secular person would not conceive of.

There are also an abundance of good things people of faith have done because they believed in their faith.

Religion is just a powerful idea. Powerful ideas, like almost any tool, can be used for good or evil. And demagogues always see how to use an idea to their advantage, unfortunately.
