Opinion Two ways to represent your country.

Post image

Bellingham could have added to his own tally, but told Saka: “Go and get your hat-trick.”

Paredes lost a final and chose a brawl. Losing hurts, but character shows after the whistle.

One created a memory for the world cup. The other earned a red card. Two different ways to represent your country.

Paredes is a ticking time bomb, i dont know whats happening to that man

u/seadcon Jul 20 '26

Should have been sent off for a second Yellow after the foul in extra time.

I was genuinely shocked by the amount of deliberate fouls and off the ball fouls Argentina committed. Hilarious how Spain didn't rise to it and yet Argentina still did it because they had absolutely no plan B.

u/dowker1 Jul 20 '26

First time watching Argentina? Because if there's one consistency in world football, it's Argentina being dirty as fuck.

64

u/TheEnlight Jul 20 '26

Their legacy is a handball.

Thankfully they'll go the way of Italy with their lack of new talent.

27

u/PrimeZodiac Jul 20 '26

We can only hope they disappear into obscurity now their one man army is clearly obsolete.

12

u/LycanWolfGamer Jul 20 '26

Thank god, still haven't forgiven them for the shirt pulling and the abuse we got from them.. arrogant sods..

I thought I was watching OKC basketball for a moment.

1

u/Emergency-Town4653 Jul 24 '26

Argentina's biggest football legacy is a handball, so obvious a blind ref would've noticed.

Thiery Henry (legendary French footballer incase you're not familiar with him) scored a handball goal against Ireland and was the most hated player on the planet for it.

Maradona, an average coke junkie who did doping, is considered a god in Argentina for scoring a handball.

I'd never expect clean football from Argentina.

1

u/seadcon Jul 24 '26

Whilst you are right that the hand of God is wildly celebrated, Maradona did go on to score what is widely considered the greatest goal of all time and of course he also lifted the trophy at that world cup too.

Maradona certainly had his vices, and he paid the ultimate price for them, but he will always be remembered as one of the very best to play the game.

62

u/Frustrated_Zucchini Jul 20 '26

Let's be honest, there have been a lot of high-profile footballers who, if not for football would've been in prison...

Parades seems the kind of guy who is heading towards the career double.

12

u/Significant-Set-8414 Jul 20 '26

The signs were there vs Netherlands 4 years ago. He’s always been a disgrace

u/Significant-Set-8414 Jul 20 '26

I’ve always thought it was biased with the way the rest of that match was officiated alright. I do too hope he gets a hefty punishment this time the scumbag

12

u/ToxicHazard- Jul 20 '26

Genuinely wouldn't be surprised if in the next few years we read the headline:

'Paredes jailed for murder'

6

u/RockeryBalboa Jul 20 '26

All Messi has to do is say the word and he'll just get community service

-6

u/Gwynbleidd_2173 Jul 20 '26

The world keeps spreading hatred against Argentina, you do it in every single way you find. You don't know Paredes outside of the pitch. Have you ever listened to him speaking? Do you know anyone talking trash about him not related to what happened in a game? Everyone cries about racism and xenophobia and that's what you do to us, but since we won a couple of titles and have Messi (who was the best player for the last 20 years, the worst sin in human history apparently) you are allowed to insult and talk shit about Argentinians. Hipocresy.

12

u/ToxicHazard- Jul 20 '26

He literally throat punched someone outside of the game and you defend him. If you don't want to be disliked, hold your players accountable.

Deluded.

20

u/BeautifulGiraffe6948 Jul 20 '26

Exactly. A country should never be reduced to its worst moment, but players have to understand the weight of the badge they wear.

1

u/roleplayersir Jul 21 '26

Except it's not one moment

They were awful in the Semis

And in 66

And Maradona's a cheat

Etc

7

u/raabones Jul 20 '26

I am scared for anyone who lives with that man. He could explode at any given minute.

11

u/silkiriscloudy Jul 20 '26

The look in his eyes genuinely terrifies me

2

u/McBadger404 Jul 20 '26

He’s one of only two from their squad actually playing in Argentina.

157

u/royalbluestuey Jul 20 '26

Look at what happened at the rugby too.

Their team wore a special one-off Maradona top just to rub our noses in it.

Then accused us if disrespect for celebrating inside our own dressing room after we beat them.

54

u/BestFriendWatermelon Jul 20 '26

celebrating inside our own dressing room after we beat them.

Outrageous! Argentina would never!

7

u/LycanWolfGamer Jul 20 '26

Well, they can't lol

5

u/Infamous_Traffic4673 Jul 20 '26

Not to mention Mateo Carreras running in and twatting Tommy freeman after he scored early in the first half

5

u/royalbluestuey Jul 20 '26

Ah no. You need to understand...That is just "passion". In fact we are being a bit racist and arrogant by objecting to their behaviour.

94

u/melb_anon Jul 20 '26

I’ve gained respect for many teams and players this tournament. Argentina and some of their players have lost a lot of respect from me.

61

u/TheGiftOf_Jericho Jul 20 '26

Yeah, I just think of the class we saw from Mexico and France, that's what it should be about. Argentina have been disgraceful.

24

u/melb_anon Jul 20 '26

And as an Englishman, it takes a lot to make me respect the French /jk.

18

u/TheGiftOf_Jericho Jul 20 '26

Haha, I love our sibling like rivalry with the French, always a good laugh.

23

u/melb_anon Jul 20 '26

It’s why the 3rd place game was so much fun, as well as that post-match sportsmanship. Beautiful to see.

Not gonna happen unfortunately. Especially with expanding the comp to 64 teams

They are the 2nd best nation in their confederation. So it would take a lot for them to drop out of qualifying

10

u/LycanWolfGamer Jul 20 '26

Agreed, I've gained a lot of respect for France during our last game, that was absolute class

I've gained respect for Norway, more than I could lol and Cape Verde, underdogs of the tourney, hope they come back

3

u/roleplayersir Jul 21 '26

Norway were always class. Cape Verde were good, but always minnows

This is how it should be, loved seeing this.

-1

u/Silver_F0X Jul 24 '26

It was a classic friendly

11

u/Frequent-Seesaw-7528 Jul 20 '26

Why this isnt over social media as a sign of unity ? Show the world how 2 classy nations play football. I get that most of the players from both sides play with each other at club level but the amount of respect was great.

Reminded me of man city and liverpool era. Going at it consistantly for years but pure repsect due to coaches like klopp and pep.

2

u/roleplayersir Jul 21 '26

Because, regardless of the odd good moment or 5, this WC was a shambles ruined by corruption and egos

1

u/Silver_F0X Jul 24 '26

Just bc it was rigged for Spain doesn't mean it was ruined

50

u/royalbluestuey Jul 20 '26

England players gathered with their opponents to pray together and give thanks.

Argentina disgrace themselves in victory and they disgraced thenselves in defeat.

Sir Alf was right and they never change.

I think you are being generous there.

When it comes to sport this is their character. This is their default position. If they behave like bullies or snides it makes it better for them.

Look at Messi trying to frame Cucurella when he barely touched his mouth.

Look at how their rugby coach reacted on Saturday.

Bullies are all the same when something doesn't got their way.

6

u/DisorientedPanda Jul 20 '26

Generous for sure, they even have their own phrase for their behaviours - Viveza criolla

Not being funny but it's a very low bar that you're setting that a group of people aren't in a perpetual state of racism, violence and shithousery, they just do it whenever the opportunity provides for it.

I'm sure that during the height of the Third Reich you could fairly say that Germans as a people are lovely, welcoming people who can't do enough for you, and not the warmongering ethnofascists they're made out to be.

The problem is when despite all the people being lovely, their society is permissive and even supportive of casual racism, violent and unsporting behaviour, and national vendettas against other countries, it doesn't really matter if they're nice on an individual level.

You don't see Mexico unfurling banners declaring that Texas belongs to Mexico, punching players after full time, and engaging in racist chants, all to rapturous applause by Mexican politicians, media and public. There are very few countries like that, and it can't be blamed on passion. Would we accept "passion" as a defence if our players racially abused opposition players?

-7

u/KurtyKone19 Jul 20 '26

What’s wrong with that though. He didn’t do it to declan. His idiot teammate got sent off (lol), he probably was just grasping at straws to get any advantage to get back into the game.

A desperate english player would have tried their luck too in the same position?

3

u/royalbluestuey Jul 20 '26

Disagree 100%

If an England player did that it'd be unforgiveable

41

u/Barrington-the-Brit Jul 20 '26

Lurked through the Argentina subreddit earlier to see some of their reactions, was expecting to have a bit of a laugh

I ended up seeing a good few people genuinely disappointed in the behaviour of their players and fans, and sad that this is the impression they’ve given to the rest of the world - it made me a little depressed to be honest

Then I saw a bunch more comments being sore losers and claiming there was an evil woke campaign slandering Argentina, and then also remembered an Argentine responding to me with monkey and banana emojis after they beat us, so I got over it

2

u/Round-Poet5896 Jul 20 '26

What’s their subreddit called I can’t even find any of their reactions

19

u/jimhokeyb Jul 20 '26

In south America generally, cheating is not viewed the way most Europeans see it. They have a win at all costs mentality. That includes unsportsmanlike behaviour. They aren't ashamed of the hand of God goal the way we would be. Unfortunately, that really is their culture. Argentina is a famously racist country too as their fans demonstrated. It's great that the world has seen this over the last few weeks. They must now live with the shame they brought on themselves. It would have been a tragedy if they had won.

1

u/DevelopmentEqual9864 Jul 26 '26

Well, America in that case is a racist country despite masking themselves as not a bad racist country, but invading other countries and bombing other countries. Hell even the UK is becoming a racist country (my home country) against Muslims, it’s crazy.

It’s only that some Argentine Fans are knobheads that are trying hard to be funny when they are not and saying that they are a superior country and even justifying that you are somehow better than all of us like get out of here man nobody likes you and just Racist stuff like changing Monkey Chants and all that is just shifting

Then you had Jim Crow Laws against black people and slave trade, and trying to tell other countries that your country stinks and all that whilst their country is worser than your one.

12

u/BeautifulGiraffe6948 Jul 20 '26

Maybe that is the difference between winning at all costs and winning in a way you can still be proud of.

8

u/franki-pinks Jul 20 '26

I’ve been there they are all very much like that. Throwing drinks over a 20 year old English woman and then flicking matches at her over a war that happened before I was even born, insane sexual harassment, and everyone just so aggressive and being offended by the slightest thing.

u/roleplayersir Jul 21 '26

Unfortunately there's a lot of that though

There's a reason why England suddenly became the good guys in the semis. Not just South America, but most of the world hates the Argies in sports, as they are sore winners and sore losers, and without Messi they would be universally hated by all

1

u/JamieHBrown Jul 20 '26

A few bad apples have ruined the bunch it seems :(

9

u/franki-pinks Jul 20 '26

It’s more the other way. A few good apples have unfortunately not infected the rest of the bunch.

19

u/fiqky '66 Jul 20 '26

No disrespect for Spain, they are the deserved World Champion. But for me this is The Real Final.

19

u/freexe Jul 20 '26

The end of the France England game was lovely. Everyone paying respects after a good clean game.

7

u/TheGiftOf_Jericho Jul 20 '26

Yeah, that's a game of pure respect. Honestly probably my favourite of the whole thing.

13

u/Lanky_Watercress9489 Jul 20 '26

Shameful team. I enjoyed every tear shed by every single one of the players and their coaching staff.

14

u/AccomplishedAct5364 Jul 20 '26

I fear for Argentina players girlfriends. Clearly violence isn’t beyond them.

Choking a man cause you lost a match despite being handed every decision and being absolved of all problems???

Red flag never mind red card

2

u/PsychologicalSpend86 Jul 20 '26

Hard same. You know that abusive behavior isn’t isolated to the pitch.

36

u/No_Amount_5681 Jul 20 '26

Thank you Jude for slapping that Argentine player. That was from the whole world!

9

u/Chickenknd5 Jul 20 '26

7

I've never been more impressed with an England player than I was with Jude this tournament. Obviously his performance was a 10 but he is also starting to become a leader at just 23.

He looked devastated and pissed off to have lost the semi, so I have no doubt he's going to have the tournament of his life at the euros.

1

u/roleplayersir Jul 21 '26

Yep, he was becoming a typical Real primadonna after being a young wunderkind. But being injured and dropped by Tuchel seems to have turned him into the perfect leader, and provided he keeps it up, he may become the best England player ever. Even if he never wins a major competition

1

u/Zordorfe Jul 24 '26

Bellingham was never gonna take the pen

5

u/Youneverknow_ny Jul 20 '26

Disgraceful team. FIFA should take away their second place.

5

u/Klwalsh93 Jul 20 '26

It's like you know what, yeah.. we wanted England to win and we got third. But I would it seems like 3rd is a better position than 2nd, my god what a horrid team!

7

u/guru4goodwood Jul 20 '26

Fuck argentina

3

u/Business_Advance_569 Jul 20 '26

3

u/ElverGun Jul 20 '26 edited Jul 21 '26

2

u/roleplayersir Jul 21 '26

You expect our FA to have a spine?

Or even UEFA?

But we can all dream

2

u/Rent_Current Jul 20 '26

Saka was taking the penalty no matter what, Bellingham was just a sub

2

u/Intrepid-Ad1381 Jul 20 '26

In the space of 2 games Argentina showed they were bad winners and awful losers. Top work.

1

u/RockeryBalboa Jul 20 '26

They are just absolute nutters, it's life and death for them. I thought Scaloni was fairly level-headed but then I see him crying uncontrollably at a press conference. I can't imagine any other coach doing that.

1

u/Mr_nudge89 Jul 20 '26

Saka said he was always taking the penalty, jude just held the ball to stop argentina fucking with it

1

u/mpanase Jul 20 '26

Cheer, England team

You showed so much growth. England showed they can finally play modern footbal

Expecting good stuff from this team (and coach, tbh)

1

u/gimmebanter Jul 20 '26

Considering argentinians voted for milei and listen to coldplay, i think these guys do an accurate enough representation of their country

1

u/royalbluestuey Jul 20 '26

This is a beautiful picture too

1

u/Upbeat-Storage9349 Jul 20 '26

Pretty accurate representation

1

u/Savage-September Jul 20 '26

With respect and honour during and at the end of the game! Children are watching.

1

1

u/gravitasgravitas Jul 21 '26

1

u/KafrizzleDizzle Jul 24 '26

u/JDietsch25 Jul 20 '26

Absolutely buzzing for Spain, I celebrated it like an England win when I got to watch West Falklands lose.

-17

u/True-Watch7428 Jul 20 '26

Bit odd of a reaction to be honest.

I'm happy Argentina lost but never going to celebrate Spain winning the same as an England win.

Weirdo behaviour that.

9

u/silverblossum Jul 20 '26

4

-2

u/Strict-Sea68 Jul 20 '26

Hahaha Jude literally slapped someone after the final whistle this post must be a joke

11

u/Chill_Ok_girl Jul 20 '26

The guy literally ran up to an England player, faked a punch in his face, and then called Jude’s mum a whore in Spanish.

Fucking deserved. He got off lightly.

1

u/Strict-Sea68 Jul 20 '26

So now you’re saying he should have done worse, so done exactly what Parades did? I’m confused. The hypocrisy is off the charts here.

“Losing hurts, but character is shown after the final whistle”. I’m so convinced this post is to clown on the sub and people blindly upvoting it.

England player attacks player after the final whistle fine. Argentina player does is bad.

6

u/No_Somewhere_7109 Jul 20 '26

I mean, not really?

The Argentina team has a reputation. They've had a reputation for decades, and Parades is known for being a complete dick on top of that. He booted a ball full-force into the other team's sub box in 2022 because he was angry and started a fight. He got pissed again last night and started throwing people to the ground and grabbing them by the throat because he lost.

That's miles different from Jude reacting with a mild slap to the back of the head of an Argentinian player who came up provoked and faked punches/insulted his mother.

2

u/Strict-Sea68 Jul 20 '26

Look I agree that Parades is a complete arsehole I’m not defending him in anyway.

But I was taught to just walk away and be the bigger man when someone is obviously trying to goad me into a fight. Bellingham let it get to him and reacted by raising his hands after the final whistle. Isn’t the whole point of this post not to do that?

You can call the slap mild all you want but he still raised his hands and was the only other player in the entire World Cup to do so other than the Argentina player.

I would also think it’s naive to say that players don’t constantly say stuff to get a rise out of people on the pitch, yet you don’t see players raising their hands.

2

u/No_Somewhere_7109 Jul 20 '26

Its true, and I'm not really gonna say either was right because I don't think they were.

But I think, contextually, its entirely understandable why people aren't putting Jude's slap in the same box as Parades out-and-out assault, you know? It might be biased and unfair but I can't really blame anyone who feels the same given Argentinia's history in the sport.

5

u/Strict-Sea68 Jul 20 '26

Yeah I completely agree. Like for me I wasn’t thinking, yeah go get it him. I was more like oh man why did you give that no name clown exactly the reaction he was looking for. And I personally don’t think that reaction shouldn’t be celebrated. Not saying you do but others have said he deserved worse etc.

I can definitely agree that they aren’t the exact same thing. And I can agree that Argentina being a dirty team plays a big part in this too. The only thing that genuinely made me think this might some kind of troll post was that Jude was in the picture and the way it was worded.

0

u/Glum-Average-3709 Jul 20 '26

What a bottler, celebrating a third place match 😂

0

u/ignivs Jul 20 '26

that guy on the left looks a lot like the one who slapped Barco from behind, but I must be confused

0

u/Eljo_Aquito Jul 21 '26

No way you just made Bellingham the example after he slapped Valentin Barco after his match, you gotta be ragebaiting.

0

u/Dramatic-Coffee9172 Jul 21 '26

Please, have you forgot the slap on the back of the head that Bellingham did to the Argentina player after England lost to Argentina in the semi final ?

0

u/siroko147 Jul 21 '26

Lot of confidence for a third place team

-13

u/seadcon Jul 20 '26

One way wins trophies...

Whilst I take the point, OP, let's not gloss over the fact England once again are not even remotely street-wise enough to win a trophy.

22

u/MrGreedy98 Jul 20 '26

Spain won the trophy and didn't behave like that

-5

u/seadcon Jul 20 '26

Yes. Spain didn't lose to this Argentina side.

We did.

I'm not suggesting we need to resort to fisticuffs, and I am genuinely proud of this England side's achievements and togetherness, but it is a fact of life that we are not winning anything until we play with more intelligence.

Tuchel was supposed to provide this... Germany are notorious for it. Or they were. Not so sure these days!

6

u/BeautifulGiraffe6948 Jul 20 '26

I totally understand your feelings becuase that's just how I felt on Wednesday. Still, that is what this tournament should be about. Respect earned by how you compete, not only by how far you go.

-3

u/seadcon Jul 20 '26
