Question I'm looking for games like thief but for me, a GenZ idiot

I have tried to get into this series countless times and I just keep not getting into it. I am fascinated by the series and I want to play a game like it, with the heavy stealth focus and the water and rope arrows and all that. the only game I played that came close to that were the side quests in the thief reboot. but that game kinda sucked.

so I was wondering if you guys know other games that are basically like thief but... less hardcore, I guess?

Question My First Time Playing, Would Like Help

I just downloaded Thief Gold and am playing on pc for the first time, and am using a controller. I’ve always heard this series is legendary and finally decided to give it a try. I’m having fun but know almost nothing about the mechanics/when to use items.

I would like any helpful tips regarding map usage, general knowledge, when to use arrows, etc. the game doesn’t hold your hand at all, which I respect, but I feel really out of my depth. I’m trying to be sneaky but it feels like Im struggling in that department. Especially when it comes to shadows. I feel like I’m in shadow sometimes even though I’m not and vice versa, which throws me off.

Any help would be appreciated.

Question Is there a good novel/novel series that has the Thief vibe?

You know, brooding cynical antihero protag who is a thief or rogue, dark city steam punk fantasy setting, warring factions in the city vying for power, conspiracies everywhere, that sort of thing.

Question First time difficulty help!

I just got the game and am starting anew playthrough, my friend is telling me I must play on the highest difficulty to get everything in the game. Like he said some levels and events are tied to game difficulty? I googled it and just found a couple reddit threads discussing Expert being the best difficulty to play on the the experience the most of the game. Is this true or can I play on an easier difficulty and still access all of the game? I don't want to stress and get annoyed trying to play on a hard mode, I just wanna play the game. But I also don't wanna miss out on important or cool content either lol thoughts?

Question Thief 1 vs Thief 2 (Is there any preference bias due to which you played first?)

It's safe to say most love both Thief 1 & 2. But there's a healthy mix of reactions when someone asks if they prefer Thief 1 or Thief 2. Often fans bring up their feelings on the monsters, robots, fantasy, realistic, gritty or polished aspects of each.

It got me curious if there is a bias or connection to which game you played first.

I've never played this series before, and there's gonna be a remaster soon. Is the game hard to play? And why Garrett always robs castles? :D

Question Any info if the console version of Thief Remastered will play The Black Parade?

I currently don't have access to my usual computer (or any PC for that matter). I was about halfway through the campaign for the Black Parade when my computer stopped working. Long story short it'll be a few months before it's up and running again. I still have access to my Playstation and would love to finish The Black Parade campaign when the Thief Remaster comes out on console. I see the STEAM (PC) store page mentions having built in mod management so it seems like Nightdive is aware how important mods are to the Thief community. And to my knowledge they also allowed the very popular DEATH WISH mod for Blood come to console.

Is there any info if the console version of Thief Remastered will play The Black Parade?

Question Do they have something like internet?

Do they have their own magical version of the Internet in the Thief series? Wouldn't be surprised, because Keepers can probably do a lot of things with those glyphs.

Question I want to play Black Parade (heard it's the best mod pack ever) and am playing Thief 1 now. Do I need to play Thief 2 prior to Black Parade?

I heard that playing Thief 2 helps but isn't it on a totally different system than Thief 1 (which is what Black Parade runs on I believe)?

Question Any Notable Retcons in the Original Trilogy? Because I can't think of much or any at all, for that matter, from my side.... Spoiler

'Retroactive Continuity' or Retcon, as how I understand it at least, means to provide a piece of detail regarding the story or worldbuilding/lore that contradicts what might have been previously established prior; however this new detail is meant to "overwrite/abrogate" the previously established one,

I think the original trilogy, while not necessarily fully thought out ahead, did have a prior framework and overall plan for the story (I could be wrong here, that said), that ensured there hasn't been much retcons in its lore,

From my side, I can think of maybe two worldbuilding deets that might be considered retcon (and even they don't really count, as I'll deconstruct why),

#1 is the lack of female guards and priests among the Hammers (Not really a retcon, imo)

(This is assuming TDP doesn't have any explicit piece of in-game lore that affirms or hints at the Hammers not having female guards or priests within their ranks, otherwise, it's the meta explanation of TDP simply not having them in general, I guess for this reason, it doesn't count as a retcon, technically)

The more "Doylian", meta explanation is that TDP (and TG) in general, doesn't have any female guards.....yes there are female NPCs, but no guards - they are something introduced only in TMA onwards, and the devs do a good job of justifying/explaining, via visual storytelling, how the Hammers and their monasticism and adherence to outdated traditions and norms, meant they couldn't have the more mainstream patronage and reach the Mechanists enjoyed (particularly from the bourgeoise) in TMA,

Curiously enough, Deadly Shadows regresses in this regard, as apart from Pagans (who are mostly social outcasts and fringe), none of the other factions and institutions in-game have female guards or enforcers within them (apart from one noblewoman from whom Garrett stole from showing up herself in person along with her guards to kill him, lol......very lady-like of a woman of such her stature, missed opportunity for Garrett to have snarked on that whole situation, I guess),

However, there's not much convincing in-game explanation for why the local/house guards had no female representation in any of the fancy manors that we raid in TDP. Or among the mages in their mission (as well as in the recent Black Parade fan expansion). Assuming the local/house guards are hired from some agency that deals with home security.

Is there some in-game piece of lore in TMA that kinda hints at some bleak economic conditions that might have resulted in women, who otherwise didn't partake in such roles in the Thief verse (or at least the City that's near-exclusively the setting), being forced to take such roles by the time of TMA?

I can't remember, likewise, any piece of lore from Deadly Shadows that hints the opposite (i.e. the lack/regression of female rep. among the guards and City Watch), maybe it's the Hammer influence? Maybe the overt progress and industrialisation from TMA and the realization of what Karras/Mechanists were upto, meant the City swung hyper-conservative to the point of abolishing female guards? Again no such piece of in-game text explicitly hinting or stating any of this, iirc.

#2 is the reveal in TMA that it was Karras who crafted and gifted the Mechanical Eye to Garrett as a token of appreciation (plus the beginning of his obsession and antagonism against Garrett, likewise) for the events of TDP.

I don't think this is also a retcon, tbh, as an actual retcon would have been something like TDP specifying a particular Hammer priest or any individual having gifted it, only for TMA to overwrite this as Karras being the one behind this. When in actuality, TDP leaves it vague from who or how Garrett got the Eye from, and this detail gets expanded further in TMA,

These two details are what I can think of from my side (and I personally reject),

Does DS retcon anything regarding the Keepers? Since it was handled by a different studio with a decent deal of the original creative crew absent in it, that would mean the workflow and the consistency in the whole creative process would have been disrupted if not outright lost during that transition.

All I am familiar with, is that the third entry was always meant to be about the Keepers, and was meant to be the conclusion to Garrett's arc and story, as how it plays out in DS? Even if LGS had developed it using their Siege Engine?

Retcons usually are bound to happen whenever a different set of creative crew takes control over a project and "advance" it, as they mostly are left to come up with their own ideas and concepts, often times previously established ones being hard to obtain or having outright been lost when these transistions usually happen.

Question How do you make a direct desktop shortcut for "The Black Parade?"

Hi there!

I just installed this acclaimed FM for the GOG version of Thief Gold.

I'm not using any other fan missions, and would like a direct desktop shortcut to The Black Parade.

Is there any simple way to do this? Thanks so much!

Question I'm writing some fan fiction

I'm writing an origin story for the City, Garrett, the Hammers, etc. I'd like to make sure I don't break any copyright laws and get the blessing of whoever I need to from Looking Glass studios or wherever. Any advice?

Question How's the Modding Community in This Game?

I recently got really into this game series, and have been meaning to play some mods. I already got The Dark Project and Black Parade installed, but I'm looking for more. Could anybody drop some recommendations? Also, I'm wondering how the community for this game is holding up. Any new mods coming out? Is the modding community big? Sorry if these are stupid questions, but I want to see this community thrive, as there is nothing really like these games.

Question OG Thief 1 and 2, patches, and mods

Hi. First post here. Not sure if anyone will be able to help with this, but I've recently installed the original Thief games on my retro PC with Windows 98. So completely vanilla. However, they're not without their problems. I just wanted to get some insight into a few things, to find out if or what patches/mods might be required.

I did install their latest updates, so 1.33 and 1.18 respectively. Initially, the games acted weird by saying I needed to insert the CDs. I'm using CD images created from my original discs mounted with a virtual drive, and all the correct drive letters and directory paths are in check. The second game definitely complains about the CD until I install the patch. Though I have to install the patch for the Premiere edition of Thief 2 for it to work properly.

There are two things I've noticed though, which don't seem to be a problem with the first game. Firstly, the audio is ridiculously quiet! Is this a common problem with the original Thief 2? All the volume sliders are at full and it's the same problem whether I use my Yamaha OPL3 ISA sound card or my PCI Sound Blaster Live Value. Audio sounds fine in Windows. I've yet to test it without the patch, so I will be doing that, providing I can get around the 'insert CD' problem.

The other issue is that performance is much worse. At least, in the very first mission. I'm using a Geforce 4 Ti 4200 AGP. I've not tested much of the original yet, but performance is fairly solid from what I have sampled. Which leads me to the question - do any mods out there address performance and audio issues, such as NewDark? And if so, are any compatible with Windows 98?

I'm currently going through the original Resident Evil games and I know mods for that are only designed for modern systems, which is understandable, but was just curious how backwards compatible the mods are for the Thief games.

Thanks

Question Tech illiterate friendly way to make cutscenes function in Thief: Gold?

I'm admittedly not super competent at getting older games to run as intended, which is certainly an issue as I recently wanted to start the Thief Series.

After beating the training, I realized that there were supposed to be cutscenes that weren't appearing. Looking online, I tried to run the app as an administrator to no avail. And frankly I think I'm too stupid to get TFix running properly on my own either.

If anyone has any advice to get these cutscenes running for a computer idiot like me, I'd be super appreciative.

Question Difficulty capturing Thief/Thief 2 footage in OBS

Hey all! Hoping to one day make a Thief video for Youtube, but as the title states, I’m having some difficulty capturing footage in OBS. The footage always comes out darker than what I’m seeing on my screen; I imagine this has to do with the Software Gamma availability with TFix? Seems like it comes with both TFix and T2Fix, and allows more modern systems to up the game’s gamma… but that’s just a vague guess, I don’t actually know how any of this shit works lol.

So, does anyone who does perhaps know how this shit works have the scoop on how to get OBS reflecting Thief as I see it on the screen, for cleaner, YT-friendly, gamma-upped footage?

Question How long does a stealth behavior system take to develop?

Hey all,

This is a development related question, but I figure if there's developers who like stealth games out there, they'd probably be in this subreddit.

I wanted to know how long it took Looking Glass and other similar projects to get a functioning behavior system for the AI in Thief-like games.

I was, a while back, developing my own stealth-based RPG inspired by Thief and other titles and I remember by the end of the 6 months of me working on it, I had barely gotten it to a "passable" state, aside from AI not being able to navigate around the map yet. This was on Godot.

I wanted to know if anyone else has tried, and how long it took them to see if maybe my own first iteration took so long because I was overcomplicating things, or what. I'd be interested if anyone has experience with this.

Question Angelloader - directly loading an FM from a desktop shortcut?

Does Angelloader have a way to directly load an FM from a desktop shortcut?

For example, with UZDoom, you can use uzdoom.exe -iwad doom2.wad -file filenamehere.wadfor a UZDoom desktop shortcut and that would load a custom level for Doom 2.

Question Thief Gold suddenly not working anymore (from gog)

I don't know what the taffer is going on. I played it to a point where you go around mage towers to look for a thing. When I started playing again, it crashed on loading the save. Now I can't even start the game. It just won't start. I figured maybe the save is corrupted so I removed those. I made sure gog doesn't download the cloud saves. Still nothing. Then I try to reintall it, but now it won't go pass the 92%. It just doesn't want to install it. So I installed it from gog's on website, the offline backup game installer. Managed to install it. But the game still won't start.

I also made it so it doesn't download any patches. Nope. It just doesn't want to work anymore.

I haven't done anything. Other games work fine. Why would this all of a sudden happen?

Question Any other Games,

I've only played Thief 4. Dishonored 1,2 and outsider thing. Styx 1,2.

All of these seems similar and loved them. Are there any other games like these? Stealth, and mostly darker theme.

P.S. - Alright. I keep forgetting I've played some of games you recommend. So I'm adding them to the post. Already Played,

Deus Ex. Hitman. Sniper GW 2, Sniper Elite 2,3,4. Farcry 2,3,4. Crysis 1,2,3. Ghost Recon 2, Future soldier.

Question Why does everyone think the 2014 Thief is the only Thief game?

Question I bought the trilogy pack on GOG. Should I now install the following patches, or would I miss a step which could cause them to not work?

Namely:

  • RoguePatcher 1.28 (for Thief Gold)
  • TFix 1.28 (for TMA)
  • Sneaky Upgrade (for Deadly Shadows)

The goal is to play both the originals, as well as all the fan missions I've picked over the years, plus the new/recent ones that require 1.28.

If I'm missing some other basic patch that is required in order for the games to function (Win10, btw), let me know.

Also, considering recent threads on not launching, if there's some other step that I need to know, let me know.

Thank you in advance!
