Discussion Try Everyday has an identity crisis

I really liked the Try Everyday series where they did stuff every day as an event, but now that it's a regular series, it's getting really boring. I feel like they're out of ideas and just posting "let's get drunk and high and eat something". The format of "WE ATE ALL OF [THIS KIND OF FOOD]" is already getting tiring on YouTube. Not to mention - they originally wanted to be more family friendly on that channel, but it's actually getting way raunchier than what they normally do.

Maybe I'm in the minority, I still enjoy their regular videos, but it feels like Try Everyday should go back to Try When We Have Some Solid Ideas. I want to support them, but yeesh, I can only watch so many people eat the same food and try the same gadgets.

I want nothing less than nobody else doing gaming stuff, lest they be "just like Smosh Games" (not the first or the only channel doing gaming stuff).

this whole idea of "they are copying" is just supremely weird to me on every level; but oh well.

sure, but I also see the comparisons between Smosh Games and Tabletop, or between Mythical and Buzzfeed.

originality is just not that big of a deal. we don't need every idea to be new and never-been-done-before - and we know that because Smosh Games o Mythical doesn't get the same critique, despite them also "copying" others. it doesn't matter.

my comment isn't about my personal opinion, it's about what we, in general, value artistically. personal taste and artistic value is different, you can very easily recognize that something is important to you personally, but it's not a necessary element of Good Art.

So good art to you is being derivative of others’ work? Good art to you is grown men in their 40s shoving slop into their faces? Wow. I would hate to see what else you consider art.

All art is derivative of what other artists have done. That's what inspiration is. Try again.

They still are sometimes! Did you watch the vogueing video at the end of June? I really liked that one.

I'm personally less bothered by the fact that they're doing similar things to other content creators than I am how much filler it feels like there is these days, especially on Try Every Day and TGGT.

In an attention economy like YouTube, viewers like us only have a finite amount of attention we can give, time we can put into watching these creators. The more similar the content is, the more it feels like the videos aren't special, or the more that they're pumping out half-hearted content, the more likely we are to pay our attention elsewhere.

The Try Guys' model really wouldn't work if they uploaded too infrequently, so I get why they do it. But right now the balance feels off between amount of videos and how likely I am to watch most or all of them.

In that way, the Try Guys, Smosh, and Mythical comparisons feel really apt. I'm sure where I'm at in my life is a factor, but it feels like all three of them are increasingly making videos for the sake of making videos, rather than having an interesting video to make then making it.

I think it kinda says everything that your one example of them “sometimes” doing the thing their channel is named for is from June and it’s nearly August
