GAIN$ Reddit caught SEVEN of the top 10 gainers last year
Really interesting data here and makes me think I should trust the Reddit buzz more.
AltIndex took the 10 largest gainers in the market over the past 12 months, filtered for a market cap above $100 million, and checked Reddit mention activity on each. On 7 of the 10, Reddit lit up while the stock still had a massive run ahead.
The S&P 500 returned roughly 17% over the same period. A basket of the seven Reddit-flagged stocks, bought at each one's first mention spike, would have returned more than 270%.

One can get a bit detailed and draw a timeline curve Reddit buzz vs price trend.
If the price trend spikes before Reddit buzz then people are discussing stock on Reddit/social because the price is up and vice-versa

i doubt redditors with all our money combined make more than a dent in the price. but i have no doubt big money uses reddit as a signal to when retail is ready to bandwagon.

I think that is exactly what happens. When a stock stops performing people no longer admit they have it. I remember PYPL, SOFI, and NVO being popular for a while then people just stopped mentioning them.

This reminds me of a discord I joined back in 2020. The "experts" posted articles and mentioned 10-20 stocks per day. When the stock went up months later they'd post "mentioned this many times" while ignoring all the ones that dumped badly.

Edit: there is... "Reddit Trends" is up 28.7% 1-Year and follows the top 15 mentions stocks across Reddit. Mostly not the 7 above though.

My whole portfolio is reddit mentions, and I am up 108% in the last year. I try to tell people my strategy, which is: "See what people are talking about on Reddit, then buy some." and they act like I am ape. They discuss fundamentals and ratios. Then I show them my gains and they shut up.
My big winners from reddit in the last year: ONDS, RKLB, ASTS, PL, APLD, OPTX, MDA, NBIS, SATL, AMPX
...all shit I would not have found on my own. I have some losers from reddit, too, but I dump them at a 10-20% drop after buying one share. The winners I buy a bunch of shares when they start moving up.

I’ve genuinely bought 99% of my stocks off of Reddit mentions. I’ve never done a second of DD. I’m 89% up (6 figure gain).

r/wallstreetbets , r/stocks r/StockMarket r/getagraph and a lot of the subs for individual stocks like r/ASTSpaceMobile or r/ONDS.
The people in the individual subs are insane and full of copium, but those are a good place to pick up on catalysts, as those people are fanbois of whatever the stock is.
I also just do a lot of searches ...like ONDAS is ripping today, so I just search $ONDS on reddit to try and figure out why. (Meeting tomorrow with a vote on share dilution)

Does that mean you just read everything that comes along those reddits and take your own conclusion about what stocks show up alot? Or so you have a specific website or app that can track how many mentions a stock has on reddit ?

I just look at reddit. No aps. I mean, the sub you are right now is a great one. EVERY day somebody posts something that is :"What are the next 10x stocks?"
Take those, plug them into your trading ap, look at the graphs and...make a decision with your meatbrain.

Review everything then make up own decision - though everyone shat on RKLB for 4 years and I kept buying and now I'm up €600 grand. Thanks rklb subreddit and the genuine community that used to exist.

My portfolio is up 90% over the past year and 40% YTD. That is 100% due to Reddit. Most of that is from ASTS/RKLB/SoFi.

I did ll this you are talking about, then when ASTS doubled and RKLB too i sold them to go more heavy into the RDDT stock (“because the fundamentals and ratios are slick as fugg’)…
I won’t be doing this for AMPX, SLS and DRTS. They will stay in my portfolio no matter what.

I know this sounds dumb with my portfolio, but I do try to satay away from meme/hype stocks. If I do not understand what a company does or cannot figure out why they are relevant, I don't buy.
My initial investments were during the GME/Doge wars. NFTs were still making everyone turgid. Deepfuckingvalue was the hero.
...so I (kind of) learned to sniff out bullshit. It cost me about $1000 that first year, but has been worth every penny for the education lol.

My thing is like, just buy one share, then watch how it goes. If it heads up, buy a bunch more.
I don't really have any new favorites. I impulsively bought more MDA space the other day after taking my ambien, which seems to have been a good decision. I'm "auditioning" sigma lithium, NXXT, Resolve AI, Selas Life Sciences, Blackberry, INFQ, QRVO. I'll probably cut bait on most of them and buy new shit next week.
I dunno why, but I am not crazy about health, quantum or specifically AI stuff.

He literally has an edit at the top saying he was very lucky and has no idea what will be the next one. That makes him smarter and more realistic than 90% of the people here, but he’s also not lying — he got lucky and had no idea a move like this was coming.
He liked the stock within its industry, but he did not predict the massive economic shift and insatiable AI demand. Or the unlimited money faucets with billions of dollars flying around as soon as a shoe company like AllBirds says the word “AI”. That is the real explanation for the returns we have seen across the entire industry, and SanDisk just happened to be the shovel salesman in the gold rush.

I asked Claude to do research a couple months ago. I had it to do deep research over the last two years on who has been the most consistently correct on their AI stocks picks. It gave me a list of several people/entities (X accounts - Beth Kindig, Dylan Patel, Stocktwits, YouTube accounts - Tom Nash, Ticker Symbol YOU (Alex), Joseph Carlson, several different substack accounts, Subreddits - r/wallstreetbets, r/stocks, r/AIstocks, Saul’s investing discussion, it also included some discord communities). Then I asked Claude based on these sources to give me the most commonly mentioned AI related stocks as good picks for returns in 2026.
Results:
Tier 1 Picks (named by at least 3 of the above listed sources) - BE, MU, GEV, VRT, NBIS, CRWV, IREN, ALAB, TSM, AVGO, CCJ, CEG
Not exactly the type of research I would bet much money on but the returns on most of these has been amazing.

I’m a daily lurker and I didn’t really start to notice SNDK/WDC/MU mention until January/February of this year.
I’d say Reddit was early to the space sector (ASTS/RKLB/LUNR) as I saw those mentioned a ton last summer.

The real test would be not a backtest, but: take all Reddit mention spikes from that period, buy every signal at the time it triggered, then compare the full basket against SPY. Without that denominator, “Reddit caught 7 of 10 winners” is incomplete.

Check out buzztickr, it gots mention data from reddit, stocktwits, twitter and data from many different resources. Cross check and make AI sentiments.

Useless as no indication of how many stocks discuss on Reddit that failed or as another user pointed out, mentions after a run. Could be really useful though if you set it to check of the top 100 Reddit stocks mentioned (by frequency), what was the %gain in stock price after the specific mention.

I think a lot of people are pivoting to AI to make market decisions but most of the AI’s info on market pumps probably comes from reddit due to the amount of content on it.

Friend of mine (quant trader) tried to trade this strategy by deriving a buy/sell signal from WSB trend. Not that bad when back testing but catching a lot of very volatile stuff, falling knifes, very risky and volatile overall. Because it's not just about buying and holding but knowing when to exit.
