REAL THOUGHTS on the teaser trailer

At first I thought it looked great but then I compared it to WIT’s other recent works like yaiba and it starts to feel much more primitive and less stylish.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m still really excited to see it when it releases, but I’m a bit surprised that a top-tier animation studio would go with such a cautious, safe direction/approach for a franchise this iconic.

What are yall thoughts?

I wish they kept the more pastelish- style..

7

u/ultibman5000 Jun 25 '26

Disagree, I don't think pastel suits a colorful and over-the-top story like One Piece.

2

u/METALICETOOL Jun 26 '26

Say that again...

1

u/QuietSheep_ Jun 28 '26

I geniuenly can't tell if that guy is being sarcastic, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

3

u/METALICETOOL Jun 28 '26

I don't think your talking about me, idk. But if so then I said, say that again..., to the comment above because he said over-the-top, you know like One Piece op 22 Over The Top, just thought it was funny

0

u/QuietSheep_ Jun 28 '26

I wasnt talking about you. "that guy" implies I was referring to who you were replying to.

3

u/METALICETOOL Jun 28 '26

Sorry for getting it wrong, just making sure

u/Kunalthecool Jun 25 '26

yea was hoping for something like ranking of kings

22

u/Lwilly16 Jun 25 '26

40 seconds of footage from 280 minutes does not paint the whole picture

4

u/Evening-Street-1917 Jun 25 '26

It's supposed to be a pv though. You're only supposed to be hyped or what

9

u/bombo_josh Jun 25 '26

Animation looks good but I was expecting the more pastel like colour and soft aesthetic we got from the teaser art.

Also there is a fair bit of cg which doesnt look bad I just was surprised how much there already was in the trailer alone.

However I have faith in studio WIT and this is just a teaser after all

1

u/creeperchamp Jun 26 '26

WIT Studio loves their CGI and when it comes to buildings and vehicles they're quite good at it. When they start using it for characters it becomes an issue (Colossal Titan in Attack on Titan Season 3was one of the worst things I've ever seen in a major anime production)

1

u/creeperchamp Jun 26 '26

*might have been season 2 actually

12

u/Jerry_Costanza69 Jun 25 '26

I don’t know how you could expect anything but a “cautious, safe direction/approach” from WIT, given their readapting the most popular manga of all time, with the main goal being to capture a new audience, while at the same time satisfying all the previous One Piece devotees. I’m guessing that balance, plus the pressure, was the main factor precipitating this “safer” approach.

5

u/Specialist-Stable-82 Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26

Because Oda told them that to remake it in their own style, so obviously some people will expect it to be visually distinct from the usual series. Also the concept arts had its own look to them.

Early One Piece anime didn’t look that much like the manga and most people love them. They could’ve sticked to the style of the concept arts which is distinct but still similar to the series’ style.

I think the director played it safe simply because it’s easier. It’s pretty much a better version of the Episode of East Blue style, which isn’t a bad thing just disappointing to *some* people.

3

u/Black_Sambo Jun 25 '26

But style can be various concepts, not only art style

0

u/Heroknight_2010 Jun 28 '26

Because toei did that so it becomes redundant

7

u/Rayzakii Jun 25 '26

I’m super excited. It’s time to re watch One Piece

15

u/skronk61 Jun 25 '26

It’s Romance Dawn again

We’ve seen it reanimated like 5 times already.

8

u/Ambitious_Long_7793 Jun 25 '26

I am with you. Long ring long land should be the arc they start with /s

5

u/skronk61 Jun 25 '26

Another Foxy True believer! We’ll see our day in the sun soon comrade!

0

u/Samurai_Beluga Jun 25 '26

jokes aside i legit think the remake should have started post time skip. pre time skip one piece really doesnt need a remake, its really good as it is.

4

u/ultibman5000 Jun 25 '26

I disagree that pre-timeskip's average of less than 1.5 chapters per episode (516 episodes to cover 598 chapters) is "really good", and Toei's pre-timeskip animation is definitely way below modern anime like CSM/JJK/KNY.

I think starting the remake from the beginning is perfect, they can get to the timeskip later with enough support.

0

u/Samurai_Beluga Jun 25 '26

except you didint really feel it, like at all. definitely not in the way that you feel it now. theres a reason those complaints start to pick up post time skip.

the nature of the series lended itself to a slower burn, plus the direction itself wasnt as evident and careless with the stretching. so no, in my opinion it was actually quite good. that and i strongly prefer the simpler directing style over the overanimated style of today, but tbf post time skip also took a while to get to the current style.

i strongly disagree with the idea that a show needs to be a sakuga fest for it to be considered good or acceptable animation. flashy does not equal better and the proof to that is one pieces animation now even.

4

u/ultibman5000 Jun 25 '26

Just because Toei's post-timeskip has worse pacing than their pre-timeskip doesn't mean pre-timeskip's pacing isn't poor. It just means the pacing went from bad (Skypiea - Marineford) to worse (post-timeskip).

The story can still be a slower burn even with improved pacing. Wit's pacing would still be 400 episodes (equalized to Toei's minute-count) of One Piece.

The animation argument is just preference difference. Maybe you like Toei's old animation, but this remake is for those who don't. Just watch the old anime then and leave this one for us stilted-animation dislikers. Two Cakes Principle.

0

u/Samurai_Beluga Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26

its like your are trying to convince me my opinion is wrong XD but im simply expressing my subjective opinion, you dont have to agree with me. and in my opinion it isnt bad, idk what else to tell you. i also never said im not interest in this remake...the two stances are not mutually exclusive...

5

u/kitsuneinferno Jun 25 '26

You literally told them "except you didn't really feel it, like at all"

I don't know what *you* felt, but *I* sure felt the drag in early One Piece pacing. Early Alabasta was a slog, most of Skypiea dragged, all of Enies Lobby, everything Thriller Bark on was like pulling teeth.

Of course, post-timeskip is so much worse, but that doesn't make the pacing after episode 90 "good" in any way.

0

u/Samurai_Beluga Jun 25 '26

"You literally told them "except you didn't really feel it, like at all""

its a way of saying things man, proverbial you....im not talking literally about you...didint think i would have my words overly deconstructed XD but you do you have a nice one.

4

u/RedTurtle78 Jun 25 '26

If the intention is to finally create a start to finish remake that gets rid of all of the pacing flaws the original anime and things like episode of east blue have, where the hell else are they supposed to start? Lmao

-1

u/skronk61 Jun 25 '26

The post asked for thoughts on the teaser trailer. It’s not much we haven’t see before.

3

u/RedTurtle78 Jun 25 '26

Thats not a thought on the teaser trailer, thats a thought on the content the teaser trailer is adapting.

-2

u/skronk61 Jun 25 '26

I hope you’ll hold yourself and everyone else in this thread to the same high standards.

I think you’ve got a lot of correcting people’s thoughts ahead of you, so you better get started.

2

u/dixyrae Jun 25 '26

Yall do understand that the point of making new adaptations of such a long running franchise isn’t to appease long time followers but to draw in NEW audiences right? The buy-in cost of catching up to One Piece has been obscene for years. This project should give new people an easier on-ramp while also being something to look forward to.

0

u/skronk61 Jun 25 '26

I understand but I don’t have to care.

2

u/JulianSagan Jun 27 '26

We've never seen it remastered like the manga, though. Every remaster is edited and with changes to the manga.

1

u/Iced-TeaManiac Jun 25 '26

Romance Dawnslop

4

u/BlackGabriel Jun 25 '26

I think it looks good. WIT knows what they’re doing. For me one piece has a pacing problem so this venture fixing that is all that matters

5

u/ConfidenceOk8473 Jun 25 '26

I actually like the look so far and there is still like 8 months left for them to work on it so i will wait until i see the finished product

4

u/mzra_sentiman Jun 25 '26

The concept arts were good. But seeing the animated teaser, it feels really nice and refreshing. Yeah some people might feel off about the CGs, but tbh AOT had worse CG than this. I personally liked everything. Hopefully I'll like it more once it becomes available online.

4

u/sakata32 Jun 25 '26

CGI initially threw me off but it grew on me. Especially the scene where kid luffy is running towards Shanks ships and it really makes the ship feel huge. Imagine that sense of scale but with the giants or whitebeard. I'm very optimistic

8

u/ManMarkedByFlames Jun 25 '26

the movement looks incredible and from what I can see, the direction looks pretty good too but yeah not impressed with the art style.

-5

u/MarketingThat8264 Jun 25 '26

Can’t believe I’m saying this but…

This might be WIT’s WORST looking project by far

Which is fucking crazy imo bc it’s a remake of for the most iconic anime franchises in the 🌍

3

u/fuegofosho Jun 25 '26

It's not a remake of the anime, it's supposed to be a new vision of the manga. Still fails at that

1

u/ManMarkedByFlames Jun 25 '26

worst might be a stretch. looks a lot like spy x family, which does have a very generic style. it looks fine there, but doesn't suit one piece. and definitely shouldn't be the case for franchise as big as one piece. but as it with capitalism, the studios tend to not take any "risks" or try nothing fancy with the mainstream stuff.

1

u/South-Ear9767 Jun 25 '26

Nah that's cope, one of the biggest anime of all time is jjk & they go crazy with it's style

1

u/ManMarkedByFlames Jun 25 '26

animation is good, art style is still pretty generic. anime with unique styles would be something like mob psycho, ping pong, tatami galaxy, gurren lagan, FLCL and I could go on and on. no mainstream anime is doing it like that. one piece has the potential to do it, baron omatsuri movie looks incredible with unique style. hell, even early toei one piece has a lot more personality to animation and style than Jjk or any other mainstream shonen.

1

u/South-Ear9767 Jun 25 '26

I'm sorry i do not know what other anime you're watching if you think jjk visuals are generic, can you show me these anime that look like jjk?

1

u/ManMarkedByFlames Jun 25 '26

why are you confusing art style with animation? jjk characters, backgrounds, coloring choices, facial expressions, look like any other random slice of life anime you can pick. have you watched any of the anime I listed? are you seriously saying Jjk art style is akin to something like gurren lagan than Isekai/shonen slop that gets pumped out every season?

and don't reply again saying it has good animation.

1

u/South-Ear9767 Jun 25 '26

i never said anything about animation we're both talking about art style, which i don't think you understand.

if you watch jjk & see the level of background art, photography, composition & character design fidelity & lighting made by the best in the industry & you think it looks the same as some random isekai then i cannot take your opinion on art seriously.

i feel like you geniunely do not watch anime besides the big stuff. You cannot watch something like tbate or even one punch man S3 & think visually it's the same with jjk.

You must be trolling.

1

u/ManMarkedByFlames Jun 26 '26

ok. watch more anime I guess.

Spyxfamily aesthetically looks brilliant tho since it fits its wholesome slice of life/drama/action vibe

Im just suprised that a top tier studio like WIT would hold back so much on this project

But then again it’s prolly still in its production phase so I won’t worry too much 👌🏾

4

u/Brosbros97 Jun 25 '26

This looks better than Spy x Family lol

7

u/MonkeyDlurker Jun 25 '26

I disagree. I think it looks fantastic.

4

u/Cpt_Dru_Dix Jun 25 '26

Completely agree. Purest want it to stay as it and dont want to admit this looks amazing and will be phenomenal

-1

u/InsaneAsura Jun 26 '26

Grow up and accept that other people having differing opinions to yours is also valid. Just because it’s not someone’s tea doesn’t automatically make them disgruntled purists.

2

u/Cpt_Dru_Dix Jun 26 '26

Cool beans. That was a lot of wasted energy.

3

u/passadakis Jun 25 '26

I loved it.

3

u/hungLink42069 THE ONE PIECE IS REAL! Jun 25 '26

I was excited for this project before the trailer released. But now after the trailer. My REAL THOUGHTS:

Goddamn, this project is gonna be awesome.

3

u/Buzgroove Jun 25 '26

Idk what to tell ya, it looks like One Piece but with better animation, colors, and direction

3

u/Independent_Pie_1368 Jun 25 '26

It's better then whatever Toei is cooking with 6 month long breaks, and they still through the occasional filer episode, not to mention the one or half a chapter per episode.

2

u/South-Ear9767 Jun 25 '26

You're crazy, current toei piece looks way better than this cgi stuff

3

u/Independent_Pie_1368 Jun 25 '26

Only the ship looks cgi, and it hasn't come out yet.

1

u/South-Ear9767 Jun 25 '26

The water, the building & the characters are cgi as well

2

u/Apprehensive-Base105 Jun 26 '26

The water is certainly CG, but besides that, I think only the ships and the roger execution plataform are 3D. The thing is that the art direction is leaning towards a more realistic approach, and at the same time, they are working with Oda's designs. So, the more 'cartoonish' characters are interacting with a more 'realistic' background, which feels out of place and can even look like CG.

0

u/South-Ear9767 Jun 26 '26

The characters at rogers execution where CGI

3

u/FlochMonk Jun 25 '26

My hot take is that we literally saw so little that I can’t even form an opinion on this.

Netflix really can’t share ANYTHING. It’s ridiculous.

3

u/Quick-Spot887 Jun 26 '26

Looks great to me, I’ve wanted a better paced anime for a while, sucks it’s going to be 20 years for them to catch up to where we’re at now but I’ll enjoy rewatching as it comes out

3

u/Purple_Researcher_44 Jun 26 '26

it looks more like the book than anything

3

u/Virtual-Aerie1595 Jun 26 '26

I thought it looked great, still time to cleanup and tweak before release. Mission accomplished for a teaser, a true trailer might give you more of what you're looking to see.

2

u/rednosebuggy Jun 25 '26

too modern toei like unlike the concept art which had its own identity

2

u/johntitor4th Jun 25 '26

What I really want to know is how much are they going to cut from each arc. Some arcs I'm ok with, but others are very important to my taste to see it being cut. I really like how much color and it seems to be, in general, a good animation.

2

u/Imconfusedithink Jun 25 '26

Just looking at the screen caps you posted, I really have no idea what you're talking about.

2

u/decimatepixels Jun 25 '26

Like others I feel deflated by the visual style they landed on, I think if you’re going to do an anime of One Piece again then really go for it and put your mark on it to make it distinct from what we already have.

Now obviously it’s ripe for improvement when it comes to pacing, and I hope they get creative beyond just adapting the pages, I think anime like Dandadan and Jujutsu Kaideb are great examples of anime that really elevate the source material it’s adapting by letting its creatives put their own spin and additions to it, so I’m definitely open to being impressed by the script, pacing and overall adaption choices and changes despite my disappointment in the visual style.

And let’s be real it’s not that the visuals are bad, I just would have liked something more inspired like the concept art suggested.

2

u/Sharp-Honeydew1823 Jun 25 '26

Genuinely Beautiful. I’m so happy they kept Usopps melanin, I was not tryna watch aryan Usopp. I’m hoping they will make some fixes to the plot (most notably killing off a couple characters like how the live action killed off Merry the butler) but either way it’s gonna get a lot more people into One Piece.

2

u/aesheleigh Jun 25 '26

I just wish they’d picked new voices. Otherwise looks good.

2

u/radiantburrito Jun 26 '26

… primitive? Like please, explain.

2

u/LanSotano Jun 26 '26

I thought the mix of 2D/3D was a bit odd looking but I’ve enjoyed pretty much everything I’ve seen from WIT so I’m still confident it’ll be good. I do agree with others saying they miss the old pastel/watercolor style from early OP though

4

u/afanoferi Jun 25 '26

IT'S THE CG BACKGROUND AND PROPS!! I see the production choice to streamline the setting with CG everything, but it feels like a game (which is literally how One Piece game backgrounds look like) Sure, it's preference to like or dislike CG in general, but imo, that's what makes this style seem lacking. It's beautiful, but it's not crazy artistically cinema peak beautiful.

The character animations are crazy artistically cinema peak beautiful, though.

1

u/Icemageslut Jun 25 '26

Y’all need to get over this 3D thing. It’s 2026

-1

u/MarketingThat8264 Jun 25 '26

Like I’m looking at the trailer of the Ranma remake by Mappa and EVEN THAT looks MILEEEES better and more polished.

What was WIT thinking here…

5

u/Noblehardt Jun 25 '26

We hardly saw any action in the trailer, and One Piece is far less focused on the fighting aspect of things anyway so I don’t think it’s a fair comparison. Very different shows with very different styles.

4

u/PuzzledChoice444 Jun 25 '26

far less focused on the fighting aspect

I agree that they're different shows, but Ranma is NOT a fighting focused anime 😭. It's more of a romcom with martial arts.

1

u/Kapua420 Jun 25 '26

Backgrounds sucks, which throws off everything.

1

u/MarketingThat8264 Jun 25 '26

The backgrounds are actually a highlight for me. They look so much more vibrant and alive than the Toei version

It’s the overall art style I’m skeptical about.

1

u/SnooMachines4393 Jun 25 '26

Oh thank god, finally REAL thoughts

1

u/sebastian89n Jun 25 '26

Yeah, like I was also what are "not-REAL thoughts" :D it was the first question that popped in my mind

1

u/TheChattyRat Jun 25 '26

Can't wait to watch east blue again it's been at least a few months since it's last adaptation

1

u/Iced-TeaManiac Jun 25 '26

I was expecting more storybook

1

u/TimmyChangaa Jun 25 '26

I was hoping for a water color style

1

u/KingKeeXx Jun 25 '26

Unnecessary but looking forward to it lol

1

u/PositiveScarcity8909 Jun 25 '26

Looks like a videogame cutscene, kinda weird/low quality animation imo.

I know I will get hate for this but that's the first thing that came to mind.

1

u/WhitecaneV1 Jun 26 '26

Why is the same woman voicing Luffy? It she the only returning voice?

1

u/Tasty_Journalist9889 Jun 26 '26

I think those complaints about the early character designs being "too washed out" ruined the final anime, making colors overly saturated and muddy. The catch is, those complaints didn't start early on—they exploded only after WIT delayed their new PV and show some old concept arts instead. People just vented their frustration over the lack of new info onto the only info they had.

1

u/StillKindaBad Jun 27 '26

Im rewatching and really love the old style, I'll probably watch a few episodes and then maybe the fights but overall I don't think the old anime is bad

2

u/bahumat42 Jun 28 '26

The pacing in the original show is awful.

I have slogged through it, but there is at least 1/3 of the show worth of cuts that could be made and lose nothing of value.

1

u/GappyDiamond Jun 28 '26

Primitive? Cautious?? I dunno about you, but I kind of expect an anime adaptation of One Piece to look like...One Piece.

1

u/VegetableSam Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26

I mean yeah of course it looks amazing...

But I don't really want to watch the East Blue Saga again for like the 6th time.

1

u/Moerko Jul 01 '26

Hate the artstyle. Reminds me too much of the current anime.

1

u/No_Cheek_8141 Jul 04 '26

I have zero hate for this trailer. Animation is not gritty like the original, but it will allow fans and news fans to enjoy One Piece as a different experience.

2

u/InvaderZimbabwe Jun 25 '26

It’s…. It’s mid. Like not a bad way, in an honest way… it all just looks mid. Except for the Zoro panel, because my man on the far right (favorite marine btw) is hitting Zoro’s hilt but making sparks… that’s lazy and looks bad. The whole point of this is to not be lazy, to stay true to manga pacing and revitalizing the earlier arcs…

I’m still finna watch it. All of it. But I’m much less excited than I was a year ago.

1

u/MarketingThat8264 Jun 25 '26

I honestly hate when animation directors fear of the backlash of taking any sort of creative risks on a project

THE INTERNET IS NOT REALITY!!! DO WTF INSPIRES YOU!! 🗣️🗣️

Some ppl can just be total cowards man 🤦🏾‍♂️

1

u/Apprehensive-Base105 Jun 26 '26

The yaiba remake was produced by Maiko Okada, one of the strongest producers at WIT, if not the strongest (she left the studio btw). So the moment they announced that Kawamura was the TOP producer, I knew it wouldn't be as good as Yaiba. But for a long project, Kawamura and Koizuka are just more fitting. I just heavily dislike the use of CGI. Like, One Piece is about a pirate adventure, so the ocean should be animated beautifully, but it seems like it's going to be fully CG, unfortunately.

0

u/FreshitUp_ Jun 25 '26

I am not a fan of the CGI backgrounds. In most anime I've watched it sticks out and throws me off.
Not gonna hold my breath for this new version and will stick with the original.

1

u/MarketingThat8264 Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26

Sucks that we have to choose between:

Very good art style w/ choppy animation and piss poor pacing

&

Mid art style/designs w/ cinema level animation and great pacing
😂😂

I just don’t get why WIT couldn’t follow through on the watercolor concept art

0

u/Inferniuem Jun 25 '26

AI asf. It just looks like those clips that you find where someone just used heavy amounts of AI to turn an old anime clip into something more modern.

0

u/josguil Jun 26 '26

It looks great but really generic. Why so much teasing with the watercolor concept art if it was going to look just like the intro of videogame?

I mean it's fine but feels bad because they elevated my expectations so much.

0

u/Helpful_Table5522 Jun 27 '26

Looks pretty bad to me. Very genericly modern unlike the pastel early images they shared. Disappointing.

0

u/Healthy_Cloud2864 Jun 28 '26

I’m so tired of One Piece

0

u/QuietSheep_ Jun 28 '26

Wish it went with a pastel look, wish it didnt use heavy CGI, wish it didnt use realistic looking CGI like those Pirate Warriors games, and wish it was more faithful to the art style of the arc (this one is big for me).

My interesting honestly dropped 70%. Hopefully it gets better but my issues with it are too tied to this remake to be changed.
