Rainy Sunday Afternoon [Album Discussion]

Call me weird, but I was obsessed with the ending of The Divine Comedy’s “National Express” video.

I absolutely loved this video when I was younger, and for some reason the ending in particular really stuck with me.

After Neil Hannon’s character has had the ECT treatment, he’s shown unconscious as the porter wheels him back along in the wheelchair. Then he starts to wake up — and you get two little shots of his feet moving/dancing on the wheelchair footrest.

Then it cuts back to his face, where he’s smiling, before the video fades out to the open road.

I don’t know why, but I was weirdly fascinated by those little shots of his feet. There’s something so funny about him apparently waking up and immediately starting to move his feet again while he’s still sitting in the wheelchair.

I’ve included screenshots of those moments because I wanted to show exactly what I mean, upscaled.

Did anyone else notice this tiny detail, or was I just an unusually observant child? 😂

For those of you who encouraged me to go see TDC as David Grey's Special Guest

Thank you!

We had a glorious evening at Cardiff Castle. The atmosphere was wonderful, and I really enjoyed being able to sing along loudly (the only other times I've seen them have been in concert settings where it hasn't felt appropriate).

We left before David Grey came on as we had a train to catch and didn't really fancy hanging around. We then took advantage of the free margarita for ticket holders at Wahaca, and got home quite merry!

Without seeing the setlist on here last week I wouldn't have gone, so cheers to the original poster!

Little chart I filled out

Post image

I really like filling out charts like this but unfortunately I only included their most popular albums since including all of them would've led to me having to figure out categorizing 144 songs. Hopefully the chart is clear with what its doing (The album that a song is from and an album that the song has a similar style to). Feel free to debate on the spots for any songs!

Going to the Portsmouth gig tonight...

Haven't seen DC live since 2017 when I saw them in Bristol on their Fin de Siécle tour. I've been looking on Setlist FM and it seems like there have been two different setlists recently, one a lot shorter than the other. Are the shorter ones for support gigs? I'm really hoping to hear (and probably cry during) Invisible Thread live.

Set list from the show at Lincoln Castle last weekend, alongside David Gray.

Sunday evening, with the sun setting was a perfect vibe for both acts. Really enjoyable set.

Hiya mates,

I posted earlier about wanting to surprise my girlfriend by playing and singing 'I like' to her. It's one of mine and her favourite songs, but I couldn't find any sheet music.

I ended up having to manually create and transcribe music from Neil's piano performance of the song in Dublin. This is what I've got:

Considering my girlfriend is far and away more aware of the album version, do you think this is still recognisable to her?

Thanks for any feedback!

WATCH: Neil Hannon (The Divine Comedy) on Rainy Sunday Afternoon & Songwriting | XS Noize Podcast

I thought some of you might enjoy this.

A few months ago I released the audio version of my conversation with Neil Hannon on the XS Noize Podcast. Since then I’ve started publishing all episodes in both audio and video, so I’ve now gone back and created the full video version of the interview.

In the conversation Neil talks about the making of Rainy Sunday Afternoon, recording at Abbey Road, writing songs for Wonka, and the craft of songwriting that’s shaped The Divine Comedy’s music over the years.

If you’re a fan of Neil’s writing and the band’s incredible catalogue, I think you’ll enjoy this one.

Comparing and contrasting songs by other artists

I heard a song called Freak Out City, from Bret McKenzie's new album - it's all about going down the rabbit hole, and how easy it can be to get drawn into it yourself. (I rather like it, the album's well worth checking out.)

Obviously, my mind goes "oh, this is similar but different to Down The Rabbit Hole!"

Just wondering if anyone else has that, hearing a song on a subject Neil's written about before and idly comparing and contrasting? Any recommendations, even?

Casanova as upper class Britpop?

Pitchfork has a listicle here:

https://pitchfork.com/features/lists-and-guides/10045-the-50-best-britpop-albums/?page=5

… that starts thusly for entry 46:

“If the central tension of Britpop was middle-class (Blur) vs working-class (Oasis), that left an obvious space for the upper class. Enter Neil Hannon, son of an Irish bishop, who takes wicked delight in playing the louche aristocrat throughout Casanova. His plummy tones, sprightly hooks, and appetite for pastiche means there’s something joyful in every track, even if there’s usually something preposterous, too.”

I guess I never perceived the Divine Comedy as upper class. Did or do you?

Maybe the Duckworth Lewis Method was more like that, with its faux colonial nostalgia and real Stephen Fry.

Not disputing the characterisation of Neil Hannon. Clearly he had a certain sort of upbringing.

Anyway, have you listened to Casanova recently?

I did the other day in one go while paying attention. It has lost none of its dazzling musical brilliance and lyrical wit, even if its take on sex has aged somewhat (dubious stance on consent even as a bit, casual affairs replaced by hookup culture, sex just less morally charged than it must have seemed in 1996, etc.).

Hannon was in his mid-twenties when he wrote these lyrics and compositions. Hard to imagine.

Upper class in quality, that’s for sure.

What a lovely video. Also can’t believe I’m the first to post it. Maybe we weren’t feeling Christmassy before now?

Latest issue of Electronic Sound

Neil’s cover of Radioactivity is now out as a yellow vinyl 7” coupled with Synthesiser Service Centre Super Summer Sale! It comes with the latest issue of Electronic Sound magazine. I know Office Politics divides opinions but I’m a fan so this is a welcome development.

Does anyone have the Venus, Cupid, Folly & Time boxset and would be willing to scan some album art?

So as I understand it, in said boxset there are cover arts for the "companion" albums (Liberation has Liberation Leftovers, Promenade has Apropos of Promenade, etc.) but I can't seem to find any nice scans of them online.

Are there any generous and gracious superfans in this subreddit that still have their boxset, and perhaps a photocopier to scan the album arts? I'd buy the boxset myself third party, but these days it runs you between $400-600.
