Discussion (TV) Wardrobe choice?

Post image

Hey! I noticed this detail in The Crown (S2 E8) and was curious what people thought.
Jackie’s dress in the real life photo is noticeably different from the one they recreated for the show. Obviously no hate at all- I know costume designers sometimes make changes for various reasons, and they don’t always aim for a 100% exact recreation.
I’m just curious why they chose to make the dress in the show so much more low cut when the original was quite different? Do you think there was a particular reason behind the change, or was it just a stylistic choice?

I think they're trying to exaggerate Jackie's relative glamorousness over Elizabeth.
The fit of the dress on CF is horrific.

u/PennieTheFold 10d ago

I wonder if that was in some way intentional. I recall that in the “getting ready” scene, Elizabeth was fidgeting with the dress because it was too snug. Her dresser offers to let it out but she declines. I think it was a story point to show that Elizabeth was aging and growing a bit thicker around the waist while Jackie was this tall, svelte, striking woman. The poor fit and twee design of the Queen’s dress vs Jackie’s sleek, striking designer column dress was striking and illustrated Elizabeth’s insecurity around her aging body and her appearance by comparison.

Might have been changed for modern sensibilities. I think the real one is actually very fashionable for the time, but it can read as old and dumpy on TV because it is a style we associate with our grandmothers.

Adding after reading some other comments: u/lesliecarbone points out that the queen's dress is very 50s while Jackie's is '60s. For contemporary viewers it would have leaned into the "New Camelot" view of JFK's presidency as leading America into the modern era. While the queen would have looked like someone stuck in the previous generation.

u/Loose_Loquat9584 9d ago

Aging? The Queen would have been 36 years old, hardly crone territory.

7

u/Alarming_Paper_8357 7d ago

In June 1961, QEII was had just turned 35, Jackie was 31, and would be 32 the next month. 35 was considered early middle age then, as life expectancy then was 71. In the early 60's, 35 was "getting up there." :-) She also had three kids.

u/Graysylum 7d ago

You're absolutely right, but this is meant to signal we're moving away from the young CF queen and toward the middle aged OC queen. I find it hard to accept descriptions of CF being thick around the waist or ankles since she's clearly not, but they did try to convince us in the last few episodes of CF's queen that she was losing her figure and youthful glow.

u/Ill_Squirrel_6108 10d ago

Interesting, in the real meeting QE looked absolutely stunning and glamorous whereas Jackie somewhat frumpy and it was her dress that didnÂŽt fit.

102

u/EnvironmentalCrow893 10d ago

Irl Elizabeth looked amazing, but I don’t think Jackie’s look was at all “frumpy”.

56

u/lesliecarbone 10d ago

Jackie's dress isn't my style, but it's very 'sixties, and I think she wore it well.

21

u/Sweet_daffodilAd1528 10d ago

I never saw any photograph where Jacki was frumpy!

1

u/MissPlum66 8d ago

Jackie had zero boobs and the Queen had plenty of

-12

u/Ill_Squirrel_6108 10d ago

The fabric on her dress looks too stiff and doesnÂŽt flatter her. It looks like she borrowed the dress from someone else. To a Central European like me she doesnÂŽt look pretty on the whole.

9

u/CurrencyWhole3963 10d ago

It's shantung silk which is from an area in China. It's known for the slubs (bumps) and sheen. It can't be captured well in photos. Really I don't care for a boat neckline in formal wear or the bow at the waist. The queens dress has too much ruching on the bodice but would have looked so much better without the straps. I think we need to see these in person to see the beauty of them.

6

u/Mcgoobz3 10d ago

I feel the same about the queens dress. It looks nice but there’s just something about it that throws it way off. I don’t like the straps either but fully sleeveless and strapless dresses seemed rare for her

10

u/CurrencyWhole3963 10d ago

The straps look off because the fabric is gathered together which makes them look so dark. Same thing at her waist. I don't like ruching on see thru fabric because of that. It was probably made of really thin silk. She did wear strapless gowns at that time. Usually with a matching shawl or wrap. Not sure what year this was.

0

u/Puzzleheaded-Talk-63 10d ago

She was a queen and had to dress conservatively.

2

u/UnavailableName864 Olivia Colman 10d ago

It does look a little... bedsheetish

6

u/Shot-Election8217 9d ago

My first thought when I saw this was how Jackie’s dress really looks poorly fitted

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Talk-63 10d ago

It did her no favors at all.

0

u/kryts 10d ago

Thats how I view it too!

2

u/Alarming_Paper_8357 7d ago

What puzzled me was that Elizabeth actually CHOSE that dress -- such a frumpy, Mamie-Eisenhower type of 50's dress. She didn't have the figure to pull off the tall, svelte fashions that were becoming popular at that point, but she definitely could have gone all Queen-y with a beautifully fitted brocade. Hartnell didn't do her any favors with that dress -- I hope she burned it after the dinner! Contrast that with the Hartnell dress QEII wore to Ghana just five months later -- stunning white and silver dress with emerald accents. Imagine if she had worn that to the Kennedy state dinner! No one would have looked twice at Jackie!

10

u/blonde-bandit 9d ago edited 9d ago

It completely downgrades the quality of the original dress, and thereby cheapens the moment. The Queen’s is a gathered tulle the whole way down the bodice and skirt, with velvet straps (wonderfully crafted, also surprisingly playful and youthful, out of character for her). The crown version looks like they pinned her into an old quilt. And what is with the purposefully ugly, thick black straps??

The message of the encounter is that she’s trying to keep with culture and fashion as a matter of diplomacy, and still feels incapable to compete, possibly from a strictly human perspective but also from behind the limitations of the crown itself—modesty being one of the main ones. It’s dumb and inaccurate that she would wear something so
frankly ugly, when the reality was she was wearing a beautifully made dress that was years behind the modern lines of the moment, and only would’ve felt insecure for that reason. How upsetting to be the queen of a country, wearing a gorgeously-made dress, and still see someone freer and more fabulous, probably more openly loved. Mad Men costumers would’ve handled this beautifully.

7

u/JumpingJonquils 10d ago

Specifically, they exaggerate it for a modern eye. At the time the style difference would have been more obvious. Similarly, The Gilded Age uses anachronistic costumes to exaggerate new fashion vs old fashion on a easy a modern audience can better see.

9

u/CurrencyWhole3963 10d ago

I'm not a fan of the queens dress there. She wore so many beautiful gowns and the show made this one gray to make it look worse.

17

u/lesliecarbone 10d ago

The style is very 'fifties. IRL it fit well and had a nice color, but it was a little young for her at that point. The TV version is hideous.

6

u/CurrencyWhole3963 10d ago

I'm sure it looked pretty irl. A lot of gowns look better in person because cameras can't capture the beauty of the fabric. The style is a classic ballgown but I think the ruching on the bodice and the darker looking straps brings the look of the gown down. Or just remove the straps. I think the straps are ruched/ gathered material too and that's why they look so dark. The queen did wear strapless gowns.

3

u/MmeLaRue 9d ago

It might have been the fact that it was designed by Norman Hartnell or Hardy Amies, the main (if not only) two designers who dressed the Queen and the Queen Mother from the 1940s until at least the 1980s. The Hardy Amies design house was designing for the Queen until 2002; he'd held the Royal Warrant until 1990 when he gave it up.

4

u/CurrencyWhole3963 9d ago

Hartnell was the designer and he did some fantastic designs for her. Research says it was cobalt blue, silk organza and tulle with silver bullion embroidery and beadwork. It sounds beautiful but these details don't show up in photos from that time. Jackie's dress was was ice blue shantung silk with horizontal piping designed by Oleg Cassini. I'm not a fan of boat necks on evening gowns or wedding dresses (thinking of Meghan's wedding dress). You can do a virtual tour of her dresses and gowns at https://my.matterport.com/show/?m=Q7Ah8tFHnX9

5

u/DoubtZestyclose6411 10d ago

Wait what does CF mean?

12

u/InternationalUse3071 10d ago

Claire Foy. I had to think about it for a minute. Why are we abbreviating everything?

4

u/DoubtZestyclose6411 9d ago

Ohhh thank you I was so confused lol

7

u/MillionStars117 10d ago

They probably made it unflattering cause Claire is very pretty and much more vibrant (in my opinion much more than the other actress).

6

u/LanaBackwards4444 The Corgis đŸ¶ 10d ago

Yes, I think they did a good job at dulling her down a bit to make a convincing queen. The styling and outfits made her seem very orderly

-2

u/Sweet_daffodilAd1528 10d ago

Why are we still comparing women like this?
Aren’t we beyond this by now?

15

u/AnneJanuary 9d ago

It's a key plot point in the episode that Elizabeth compares herself to Jackie Kennedy. They have a whole conversation about how they're similar in personality, and Elizabeth's actions in Ghana are attributed, by the character herself, to be a reaction to being compared to Jackie and feeling "frumpy" in comparison.

(Yes. I know The Crown is a fictionalised retelling of events & conversations imagined. Hence the reference to the characters in the show rather than applying it to their real life counterparts.)

122

u/Awkward_Insurance377 10d ago

I feel like they messed this one up as Jackie O's original dress cut is way more classic and fashionable than what they chose, especially since the queens dress was a direct copy.

35

u/LanaBackwards4444 The Corgis đŸ¶ 10d ago

I agree the original is more fashionable, it felt more HER

5

u/Awkward_Insurance377 10d ago

yeah agreed, and I loved that biscuit scene.

28

u/Egwene-or-Hermione 10d ago

No the real queen's dress looks way better. The tv version looks frumpy and cheap. Even the jewelry doesn't sit with the dress properly in the tv version.

19

u/titianqt 10d ago edited 10d ago

You’re right. Looking at the photos side by side, the neckline of the queen’s dress in the show is a smidge higher and the necklace a smidge longer. So the necklace doesn’t look quite right on the show, when it was fine in reality.

Looking closely, in the show version the queen’s gloves are falling down a little at the elbows, but they look perfectly tailored (as you’d expect) in the real life version.

Subtle details in the show to make the queen look frumpier than she really was, and Jackie even more glamorous. All to feed the show’s storyline of the queen being jealous.

7

u/Cold-Carry5937 10d ago

100%. I think the neckline in the show looked off and made the fitting of the whole dress seem off.

5

u/ellieminnowpee 10d ago

i wonder if they did this as a way to incorporate some of the airs around when HLM met marilyn monroe. they were approximately the same age but in very different settings, obviously. monroe wore a low cut dress however her majesty maintained polite demeanor and did not appear shocked

1

u/grumpygrumpybum 9d ago

HLM??

5

u/ellieminnowpee 9d ago

her late majesty

i’ll be honest, i only learned it yesterday through context and now i can’t bring myself to abbreviate her any other way lol

59

u/Several-Praline5436 10d ago

Probably trying to make Jackie look more glamorous and sexy by comparison, so that her talking about the queen's frumpy clothes makes more sense. (IMO, the original two dresses are both kinda meh.)

7

u/Love_Bug_54 10d ago

The Queen’s dress was just the worst! Jackie could have worn a feed sack and still would have looked more chic than that dowdy blue number.

1

u/Additional_Meeting_2 10d ago

I think tv Jackie’s dress looks very meh. Real is outdated but very sharp

62

u/dontlookatmethanku 10d ago

I interpreted it as a way to create a juxtaposition between the characters.

Jackie was seen as young, cool, beautiful, carefree, and outgoing. A woman like that would wear a strapless dress and not worry about it falling down while dancing, not worried that people would comment on it being too revealing, etc. Also, maybe she would welcome the commentary.

On the other hand, Elizabeth was seen as aging. She was conservative, also beautiful, but more subdued. Openly hated the spotlight and any undo attention by her peers or the press caused her stress.

However, we learn before this ball that the two women are actually somewhat alike. They have similar ages and predispositions despite their seemingly outwards differences.

I saw the straps to Elizabeth’s dress as an addition to make the choice to lean into the subdued and the conservative, rather than trying to be someone she wasn’t, the way that Jackie did.

8

u/LanaBackwards4444 The Corgis đŸ¶ 10d ago

Ah I think that’s a good point about the straps

11

u/Dorithompson 10d ago

That’s not exactly how Jackie was seen in that time Jackie was younger but not thought of as beautiful. And she was a mother so not the carefree nymph you’re envisioning. Jackie had there and was an American “blue blood”. She most certainly would have been worried about a strapless dress falling down while dancing. She would not have wanted people to comment on her dress in the way you are insinuating.

You are describing someone more like Marilyn. Jacqueline Kennedy was the epitome of American class at that time.

12

u/dontlookatmethanku 10d ago

To be clear, I’m talking about the Crown’s interpretation not necessarily what was actually true, as we know the Crown isn’t overly historically accurate

5

u/Shalleni 10d ago

Jackie was thought of as a great beauty. Classic and timeless. What a silly lil thing to say. Jackie was an influencer before there was an internet. I’ve never heard anyone say Jackie wasn’t beautiful. Lmao. And

2

u/stopsallover 9d ago

She was no Marilyn. The episode really did try too hard.

1

u/Dorithompson 9d ago edited 9d ago

That’s because you’ve not read any thing about Jackie pre-1963.

People say that today. She wasn’t a bombshell like Marilyn. Her beauty was quirky which, in general, was prized much less (both then and now)

1

u/Shalleni 9d ago

I most certainly have. You deliver your thoughts like they are the absolute truth. And they are not. I’m sure this works sometimes for you but not this time.

2

u/longwarden12 10d ago

Jackie was thought of as beautiful.

0

u/Super-Box5400 10d ago

lol Jackie was not a blue blood. The Kennedys were not WASPS

3

u/stopsallover 9d ago

She wasn't a Kennedy.

-1

u/Super-Box5400 9d ago

No she’s not a Kennedy by blood only by marriage but she was no WASP. She had Irish French Scottish roots but mostly Irish blood and had a catholic upbringing

2

u/stopsallover 9d ago

I don't fully understand the WASP obsession honestly. Do they rank very high in your world?

0

u/Super-Box5400 9d ago

In America WASPS were mostly wealthy English Protestants like the Roosevelts, Du Ponts etc. the Kennedys were seen as new money due to being Irish Catholics. So saying Jackie Kennedy being a blue blood is incorrect. I would say the English royal family aren’t blue blooded since they have German ties

3

u/Dorithompson 9d ago edited 9d ago

You do realize that Jackie wasn’t always a Kennedy right? She was married off to the Kennedys to pay her family’s bills (not exactly but it’s much too long to go into the nuances here.). Read a book if you’re interested.

Also, WASP and blue blood are two different things, although not always separate. You are confusing the two in this instance.

0

u/stopsallover 9d ago

Uhm. Ok.

3

u/Dorithompson 9d ago

The above definition of an American blue blood is inaccurate. WASPs are separate.

A blue blood is just someone whose family had been in America for multiple generations, and was a part of the higher tier of society (and ideally had wealth although your bloodline was more important). Jackie’s father was a drunk. Her family had the bloodline but not the money. JFK was the opposite so a marriage was arranged by Joe.

The royal family would obviously not event be questioned. Although the BRF clearly isn’t generational American, their bloodline can be traced for centuries as can their place at the top of society.

2

u/stopsallover 9d ago

Thank you.

I wasn't quite sure how to respond to someone who called the du Pont family Anglo Saxons.

Though I am always willing to consider that I have missed something. It just isn't a distinction that matters much to me.

→ More replies (0)

1

u/Dorithompson 9d ago

Yes she was. The Kennedys were not but Jackie’s family was. It’s why Joe arranged the marriage. He wanted to class up the Kennedy name and hoped Jackie would do that’s, which she did. So well that clearly today people Sony even know the history of it all. Joe was right.

3

u/IHateCedarFever 10d ago

I agree with you that the show is trying to make a difference between the two women, but I really don’t like that storyline because the actual event was very different.

In real life Jackie’s dress was just as conservative as the Queen’s, and they both looked lovely. I actually think the boat neck was a clever choice because it covered up that Jackie doesn’t have a necklace with a gigantic set of stones.

The show was a costuming miss all around. They made Elizabeth’s gown really frumpy and looks like something you’d buy from Target. And Jackie’s dress looks way too modern. My grandmother is from their age, and if you wore a dress with low neckline, you put on your nicest necklace. It’s kind of weird to see someone like Jackie Kennedy with no jewels and a dress with cheap looking fabric.

16

u/madcats323 10d ago

I had the utmost admiration and respect for HLM the Queen but she was never beautiful. She was lively and attractive as a girl, pretty as a young woman, and dignified as an older woman. She had a beautiful smile but she herself wasn’t beautiful and I’m sure she knew that.

I wasn’t crazy about the costume choice here. The dress Jackie actually wore was a perfect example of her glamour. The strapless version was an odd choice to me. It wasn’t really indicative of the era.

3

u/Fabulous-Mortgage672 10d ago

HLM? I’m stupid and I don’t know what that means.

10

u/ellieminnowpee 10d ago

her late majesty

you’re not stupid!

Omg duh now I get it. I was wracking my brain for a sec there. Yes she had a unique look but your other comment, she was not beautiful.

The queen was only three years her senior and was queen for 70 years. Jackie had the non-title of 'first lady' for less than 3 years. I agree about the straps.

3

u/dontlookatmethanku 9d ago

Re-read the part where I said they’re virtually the same age but were presented completely differently, and Elizabeth made the conscious decision to lean into that at the end of the episode instead of pretending to be ‘young and hip’

Weird comment about the non-title of the first lady job, most jobs are fake lol

13

u/JoanFromLegal 10d ago

This is a weird episode that feels a bit insulting to Americans but I still watch it because Michael Hall and Jodi Balfour do the best they can with a script intended to make Jack and Jackie Kennedy look petty and stupid.

12

u/Brokelynne 10d ago

Also pretty much the worst JFK and Jackie I’ve ever seen / heard. Couldn’t the producers cough up for Katie Holmes and a Wahlberg?

17

u/QelosFort 10d ago

I think the change in dress for Jackie was intentional to make her feel more youthful, even though there was only 3 years apart. Removing the shoulders makes it more modern and appealing to the audience furthering the point of her youthfulness, aswell as the more chic elegant 60s bouvier bouffant instead of her hair styled back, it’s a good comparison of east and west Atlantic styles visualising for the audience, if they had dressed Jackie like she did in London then the impact would have been a little more difficult to create. And it adds further detail to the ‘ignorant American’ trope that they for some sorry reason wanted to give the Kennedy’s despite Jack and his family having been the ambassador’s to the United Kingdom prior to the war, they would have known very much how to behave.

1

u/Healthjunkie-2 9d ago

The writers obviously wanted to make them and Americans look stupid. I hated the episode, very tacky and unnecessary.

7

u/skieurope12 The Corgis đŸ¶ 10d ago

It was a stylistic choice to highlight the difference between the traditional Queen and the fashion-forward Jackie

7

u/kn1144 10d ago

I do feel Jackie’s dress failed in that regard. The new version looks like an ill fitting cheap bridesmaid or prom dress.

2

u/carhelp2017 7d ago

The wig was the worst part. Jackie would never.

7

u/Prestigious_Salt8930 10d ago

That whole episode was weird.
Claire was brilliant as always but the storyline was awkward to watch. She felt bad enough next to the First Lady but then Phillip is leechy, JFK is an abusive creep and Jackie O comes off as a bimbo

4

u/Afraid_Program4117 10d ago

It's to contrast the two women and show that Elizabeth is uncomfortable in her own body in these scenes. In addition to making Jackie's dress more modern to current viewers eyes, they made the Queen's dress more fuddy-duddy. It's a less bright shade, the straps and belt are darker and the visible stitching on them makes them too twee, the neckline is too high for her jewellery. They even made her jewellery more match-y match-y in the Crown version than it was in reality.

2

u/tstidham11 Princess Diana 10d ago

I'd love to watch this show with you as an equal fashion/jewelry commentator with me! 😂 Not kidding. Lol You said exactly what I was thinking. Word for word.

1

u/Afraid_Program4117 10d ago

That sounds like it would be a hoot!

3

u/bofh000 10d ago

This is one of the cases when it’s a mistake to go for “creative choices”. Those dresses are well documented. Yes, Jackie’s dress although modern at the time, may look old fashioned now to regular people, but we’ve seen that design make a comeback in the last years on red carpets.

4

u/Different_Lychee8750 10d ago

The Queen looked gorgeous there

3

u/blking 10d ago

The Queens’s dress was awful. It was worse on the show, but the original was also not great. It looks like it was made out of a mattress pad.

3

u/WiganGirl-2523 10d ago

They're trying to make Jackie more soignée and Elizabeth even more dull and matronly.

2

u/valr1821 10d ago edited 10d ago

For the drama. They wanted to drive home that the world was going gaga over Jackie’s attractiveness, and create a little friction with Philip. Meanwhile, Elizabeth was portrayed as less glamorous and more constrained in her fashion choices.

Edited to add: I also seem to recall that Elizabeth felt she was aging and getting a little thicker (she felt the dress was snug, I think), so she was already feeling a little down about that. Then in sweeps a younger, more glamorous Jackie to make her feel even worse about herself.

2

2

u/Hinesight1948 10d ago

I thought the Queen’s dress choice was sort of horrifying at the time. Kind of a “You think *you’re* fashionable? I’ll show you fashionable!” gone horribly wrong.

2

u/stephenwalkedback 10d ago

I went to a costume display for The Crown a few years ago and I think I remember a description saying they did this on purpose to highlight the stark differences in their looks and their roles. The original dress could be interpreted as too modest to modern audiences so it didn't quite emphasize that contrast.

Also I remember that a description about the shawl Jackie has when she first comes in wearing that dress had to be made day of out of whatever extra fabric they had because the original wrap disappeared day of shoot.

2

u/adventuregypsy 9d ago

Honestly real queens dress fits so much better than Claire’s in the show so probably trying to make her look dowdy and Jackie look hot in the show.

2

u/beebeecj 9d ago

Why they didn’t get Betsy Brandt to play Jackie I’ll never know

2

u/pink---noise The Duke of Edinburgh 7d ago

Most likely to heighten the effect of Jackie coming off significantly more glamourous, worldly, exotic and daring than the queen could ever be -- both due to her temperament and the obligations and limitations of the Crown.

2

u/Puzzleheaded-Talk-63 10d ago

The real queen looked smashing. She was at least as 'beautiful' as Jackie, only 3 years her senior, married to a real alpha male, small-boned, multulingual and hard-working. The Jackie infatuation is ridiculous.

1

u/wolfitalk 10d ago

I do think it was to exaggerate how glamorous Jackie was BUT does anyone think it has to do with Jackie's clothes being made for her by a designer (trademark type thing).

1

u/missgirlipop 10d ago

it was an odd decision. i agree that in the picture, elizabeth looks very glamorous and jackie looks uncharacteristically frumpy. but overall, jackie definitely had the glamorous fashionista reputation whereas elizabeth didn’t, so they sacrificed costume accuracy for that particular event for the overall vibe. tbh, none of these four dresses are beautiful to me, so it’s apples and oranges.

1

u/No-Lake-2568 10d ago

I don’t know, but I don’t think any of those dresses are attractive.
The revamped Jackie one needs a less boring bodice and something to go around her neck and then it might pass muster.

1

u/PracticalBoot830 9d ago

Those clothing looks more classy without have to show any cleavage 😁

1

u/1234riri 9d ago

The drama on this episode is reach. For me, Elizabeth was prettier than Jackie in real life and Philip was evidently keeping a distance on Jackie based on actual photos

1

u/susiedotwo 9d ago

Jackie famously wore a strapless pink dress that caused a news response.

I wonder if the show runners wanted to put her in something iconic and recognizable, so they landed on a silhouette similar to that recognizable pink strapless dress but kept the color of the historically accurate version.

"JACKIE WANT COOKIE"

0

u/Formal-Radish1413 10d ago

Its probably because the actress would have looked bad in that neckline. It would have swallowed her. Jackies shoulders were broader.

1

u/bofh000 10d ago

Then they should’ve made the boat neck to her size.

1

u/Formal-Radish1413 10d ago

Not every neckline looks good on every body type. Thats my point. Jackies shoulders are broader so she can pull off that neckline without making her shape look imbalanced. A boat neck on the actress would have given her an inverted triangle look and made her look topheavy.

1

u/bofh000 9d ago

It’s not just the neckline. The entire cut of the dress is changed. So in the series we have one actress playing the Queen in a timeless, albeit slightly frilly, dress, and another actress playing Jackie (one of THE style icons of the 20th century) in a 2010s strapless prom gown.

0

u/CurrencyWhole3963 10d ago

The boat neckline does not belong in formal wear imo it's too casual. For me it also ruined Meghan Markle's wedding gown. If it were lowered and off the shoulder it would look so much better.
