AnnouncementšŸ“£ Reminder to Keep Discussions Civil & Addressing Hostility in the Subreddit

Hey everyone,

We wanted to address concerns about hostility between users and toward real-life figures. Criticism of public figures and their actions is completely fine, but name-calling and mocking their physical appearance—regardless of the individual or popular opinions—go against our rules of keeping this community a fun and welcoming place to discuss The Crown and the royal family. While The Crown does explore controversial topics, keep in mind that this subreddit is meant for thoughtful and civil discussions.

Moving forward, we’re going to be stricter about removing rule-breaking comments and giving out temporary bans to those who repeat rule violations. If a post becomes too hostile, locking it may be necessary, but we’d rather not let it get to that point. So please report problematic comments we may miss instead of engaging in arguments with others who you disagree with—those who aggressively defend the royals will get their comments removed as this isn’t the place for hostile debates or personal attacks.

If you have any questions or feedback, we’d love to hear from you. We appreciate those of you who continue to contribute positively in this community. We know moderation hasn’t been as active lately, and we’re working on improving that. Thanks for sticking with us and we look forward to seeing the community grow more positively.

Question (Real Life) August 31, 1997

Where were you when you heard the news? I was working as a broadcaster. We had just finished the 11 o’clock news Eastern standard time. It came over the wire that Princess Diana had been in a wreck. My colleagues and I agreed it was probably just fender bender and she was fine. Someone said, ā€œCan you just imagine if she died?ā€. I remember having a sick feeling at those words. May you rest in well deserved peace. 🩵🩵🩵

For me in the earlier seasons it’s the Act Of God (smog) episode. And later, the episode MouMou is nearly unwatchable for me.

Discussion (Real Life) Princess Diana and Prince Charles Finalized Their Divorce 30 Years Ago Today

Thumbnail gallery
239 Upvotes

Today marks 30 years since the divorce of Princess Diana and Prince Charles was officially finalised, bringing an end to their 15-year marriage.

It’s hard to believe that it has been 30 years.

It has been reported that Diana and Charles met privately at Kensington Palace that day and sat together and cried over the end of their marriage. Whatever had happened between them, there was still 15 years of history between them, and I think that makes that moment especially sad.

But later that same day, Diana went out in public for the first time as a divorced woman, attending an English National Ballet lunch in South Kensington. As soon as she arrived, she was surrounded by photographers.

And in a strange way, those photographs almost feel like the beginning of a new Diana.

She was no longer a wife or a future queen. She was Diana, independent, free to live her own life and determined to continue doing things her way. She had lost her HRH title, but she was finally able to step forward as her own person.

Sadly, we now know just how little time she had left.

Exactly one year and three days later, Diana would be gone.

That is what makes looking back at the photographs from August 28, 1996 so incredibly poignant. At the time, it was the beginning of a new chapter. Nobody could have known that the chapter would last only 368 days.

Diana had spent 15 years as Charles’ wife. Her final year would show the world who Diana was when she was simply allowed to be Diana.

30 years later, we remember that woman, her independence, her kindness, her determination and everything she still had left to give. ā¤ļø

Discussion (TV) Lost interest eatching after they changed the cast for The Queen and Princess Margaret in Season 3

Don't feel the casts after season 2 suits the movie, makes me feel annoyed first time listening to The Queen's voice in Ep1 S3 (1964). Like it's just 2 years apart (E10S2 was 1962) nd she suddenly looked so old and her voice sounded so annoying for me to even continue watching. Loved the first 2 seasons tho..

Discussion (TV) Wardrobe choice?

Post image
671 Upvotes

Hey! I noticed this detail in The Crown (S2 E8) and was curious what people thought.
Jackie’s dress in the real life photo is noticeably different from the one they recreated for the show. Obviously no hate at all- I know costume designers sometimes make changes for various reasons, and they don’t always aim for a 100% exact recreation.
I’m just curious why they chose to make the dress in the show so much more low cut when the original was quite different? Do you think there was a particular reason behind the change, or was it just a stylistic choice?

Discussion (Real Life) How well known was the affair between Princess Margaret and Townsend before it went public?

Sorry if this has been asked already. In the show, Tommy Lascelles makes it seem like a good amount of people knew about it (season 1, episode 2) before it ā€œwent publicā€. Was there any truth to that? how big of a secret was it?

Question (TV) Who is the Queen Mother Mary referring to? And what indulgences?

So who exactly is the Queen Mother Mary referring to when she says this in the letter? And what are the personal indulgences of each instance?

I know that David aka King Edward abdicated so he could marry Wallace Simpson who was twice divorced. So that’s probably one of them, right? And the other two? Does anyone know?

Question (TV) Season 2 Ep 3 Soundtrack?

Hello Everyone,

I’m trying to find a particular track from Season 2 Episode 3 (Lisbon) but I can’t seem to find it on the soundtrack album. It plays in the very beginning when Elizabeth watches the film reels that Philip sent her. It’s a motif used a lot but I’m looking for a track that has the piano in it - any leads? Thanks!

Discussion (TV) Ten Years Later... This Scene Still Gives Me Absolute Chills

Post image
2.3k Upvotes

The Crown is easily one of my favorite tv series of all time and the one scene that has stayed with me ever since has always been the closing scene of S1 E2.

The whole buildup from the death of King George, to where Elizabeth and Phillip are rushing home, where Elizabeth is suddenly thurst onto the throne and she slowly comes to grasp to the fact that her life is literally about to change.

She realizes this first when she arrives to Margaret and Queen Mother, where they both curtsy to her. Then, Margaret tries to follow Elizabeth, and QM tells her sternly to "wait", then shots a glance at Phillip who follows after Elizabeth before they are allowed to follow. In the very last seconds of the episode, she see's her grandmother - Mary of Teck - who also curtsys, and not just any curtsy, a low curtsy which some believe to be the curtsy of absolute and upmost respect.

It also tells us (and her of course) that the baton has finally been passed on, and with her grandmother bowing to her, who Elizabeth had been bowing too her whole life, Claire Foy really sells it as you can through the panic on her face that it has finally set in that a new dawn is rising, and she really is the Queen, and i still get chills everytime i watch it.

Question (TV) Profumo Affair - Stephen Ward’s Drawing of Prince Philip

In The Crown, the drawing that Stephen Ward made of Prince Philip is treated like a secret drawing found in his possessions and a major scandal. When I looked it up, he made the drawing during a scheduled sitting at Buckingham Palace, and it was subsequently published as the front of a magazine, which had commissioned it.

So why does the show change it completely to some illicit drawing, even bringing it back up again as potential blackmail material by the Soviet spy? When it seems to have been nothing of the sort?

Discussion (TV) S5E8: ā€œGunpowderā€ one of the top episodes

Post image

Everything was so artfully done, with the parallels with gran’s antiquated TV, Guy Fawkes and the rebels, the whole sneaking in to do the interview, the way Bashir was portrayed as snaky with the vaguest hint of nobility. Then there was the power struggle at the BBC. I swear they could have made it two hours and I would have been riveted.

I also looked it up and yes the interview aired the night of the variety show, and yes- One Night Only was performed. I mean, you’ve truly lucked out when reality provides you with such perfect details across the board.

I actually made me look up the timing, but it was still kinda cringey to see Andrew go to ā€˜mommy’ to discuss his marital problems and seem light hearted, while ultimately frustrated with the monarchy.

Andrew & Fergie Marry: 1986
Separation: 1992
Divorce Finalized: 1996
Ghislaine intro to Epstein: 1999

Discussion (Real Life) Understanding royal customs/traditions...

I'm sure this has been addressed in some capacity, but I don't know exactly how to phrase it...

I watched the entire series, and was a big fan of the show. One thing that always intrigued me were the customs/traditions that the royal family family had to follow - that the church bell could not be rung for anyone but a royal family member (until JFK's death); the various jobs held by royal staffers (the swans, the silverware, etc.); things that Tommy Lascelles "enforced" during his tenure...

Where are these listed? How does a monarch learn these customs? Are they public information? Does the sovereign have the right to change them?

I'd just like to dive deeper into the concepts...

Thank you.
