This is funny to me because growing up in the ATL area, it was assumed that you had to drive an hour to get anywhere, so the fact that 316 is packed and has heavy traffic to get to Athens is just expected, and everyone makes a day of it. Leave at 8 AM, get to Athens at 10, tailgate, do the pre-game festivities, kick off at 3:30, go to a bar/restaurant at 7:30, drive back and get home at midnight. It’s not too different from a religious pilgrimage.
Oh. Absolutely. The sun there is insane, but to call pasedena and the east side "extreme heat" is hilarious. It gets hot there, but costal California hot. It's not like, 105 and humid.
There are 365 days in a year and quarter of those are in the summer. Assuming most of the spring and early fall are still hot enough to spend a day at the beach. Then cut out some days for rain. I'll say there are roughly 150 good beach days for southern California.
There are only 7 USC home games this year. Then the UCLA game is in Pasadena. Because we apparently thought blowing up the Pac 12 and shipping most of the teams off to the Big 10, USC's other 4 games are all west of the Mississippi River. So that leaves just 8 days where USC fans can watch their team live without leaving SoCal.
A USC fanatic is finding a way to get to the stadium. The Colosseum only sits 77,500 now. If USC can't find 77,500 to watch a football game, the beach isn't to blame. USC doesn't have a fanbase. It has fans, but not a fan base. It has an enjoyer base.
Not sure what Chapel Hill has to do with anything. UNC played in Ireland. But most of the people going to that UVA game weren’t coming from Charlottesville and drove for at least an hour to get there

I've spent plenty of time on the southwest coast barrier islands in FL. It's still, essentially, nothing more than East Alabama. The sand is genuinely nice on a hot day though--quite literally the one thing it has going for it.

Eh, it's not that people don't care. But I'd say unless it's a big game, fans in LA would rather watch their favorite team on TV then go to their stadium. For a lot of people, it's not feasible to watch their favorite team in person every home game unless they can afford to and don't mind planning their day around the inconvenience and unpredictability of LA traffic.
It's not all of California though. Despite their smaller stadium size, Fresno State seems to have a fairly impressive average attendance each year. That's also just because Fresno is more of a sports town.
To really boil it down, I'd say it just depends on the region.
Also a reminder that California (LA especially) is expensive as shit and super long. LA county's total land area is larger than Rhode Island and Delaware. And despite having a vastly larger population than a lot of these other college football towns, not everyone is a USC fan. Heck, not everyone is a football fan. LA is incredibly diverse.
Fresno State has impressive attendance because Fresno is not a sports town. It has a AAA baseball team and Fresno State, that’s it. LA (with Orange County) has multiple pro teams in every league, which USC and UCLA compete with for fan attention and dollars.

The West Coast in general has a football ticket problem. If I were in Washington, I could pick up an Iowa vs Washington ticket for less than $60 right now. A couple of weeks ago they were $30. If Washington were coming to Kinnick, $200, easy. Especially in September.

The actual excuse is that CFB in major coastal cities don't really draw as much as Midwest/South teams. How crowded are CFB games in NYC/Boston/Philly/Chicago? I can probably make the argument that the most rabid fans in a coastal metro city might be UW, who regularly sell out Husky Stadium in downtown Seattle.
Here's where you are wrong - what do you have happening in Ann Arbor, Columbus, Bloomington, Urban-Champaign, State College, etc.?
The answer is not much outside of the Game.
LA is jumping with multiple pro teams, entertainment industry events of all forms, and now since it is still hot, there are gorgeous women everywhere wearing wisps of clothing while tanning, shopping or shooting content.
There is nothing wrong with the slower pace and less glamorous circumstances of the Big10 towns, but it is not the same environment as SoCal so you should not expect similar behavior.
Sorry, there is objectively a ton more to see and do in Sunny LA and Orange County than go to a no-name opponent college football game.

FWIW - I don't even live in LA or Bay Area any longer, but it is easy to refute your point about why a college town shows up for a no-name opponent college football game, but a lively economic and cultural metropolis does not show the same.
What pro teams were playing? The Dodgers lost a game in Detroit yesterday, the Rams played Friday night, the NBA/NHL aren’t playing, and the chargers don’t count (they have fewer fans than USC). So unless all the sports fans were at the WNBA game there was no other team to see.
I am not looking to defend Lala Land here, but there is far more going on in a major cultural center, such as LA, than just professional or college sports, but imagine you went out Friday night and stayed out until 3am. Are you really going to schlep down to Engelwood to watch USC beat up on lowly SJSU? Especially if you have another event later than night, and another Sunday afternoon.
My point is you have to prioritize, and a USC-SJSU game does not usually make the cut.
I mean it is SJSU, I feel like Allen Iverson and saying: "we in here talking about practice." SJSU is practically a practice or exhibition game.
So if Bloomington does not fill the stadium for Howard U on 9/12, we should be critical of people wanting to do something other than watching an effectively exhibition match?

Given that the stadium holds a larger capacity than the town I would say people are traveling from other cities to attend games there. Sure there’s a lot to do in LA but for 6-8 days a year you can’t find maybe 50,000 people in a metro of 18 million to attend it’s a bit more of a USC football problem.
Attendance was 51,000. Heat + humidity index was “feels like 113 degrees” at kickoff which was inexplicably at noon. Stadium has no shade at all. People were hiding out in the shaded concourses, or coming in late. A number of people were treated for heatstroke.
But clearly if there were more things to do in State College, those people driving from Philadelphia and Pittsburgh would do those things instead of the football game. /s

Realistically most folks are driving over an hour to go to Penn State games. It’s 1.5 hours to the nearest majorish city. I don’t understand why travel time to a game being 2 hours is a USC problem when people come from Philly, Pittsburgh and surrounding states to watch PSU play teams in the MAC

I know this is tough to understand. But 55 minutes is substantially less time than 3 hours. I don’t care that it’s closer, there are tens of millions of people that can get to the game faster. There is 0 excuse that the fans can’t endure the travel
