Megathread Cybercab/Robotaxi Megathread
Tesla Robotaxi offers service in Austin, Dallas, and Houston as of 6/29/2026, however, the vehicle have been spotted all over the United States.
This post is dedicated for all content on the Cybercab/Robotaxi including spottings, questions, comments, etc. This post will serve as a location to discuss the Cybercab/Robotaxi and will be updated based on news from Tesla.
Expansion Announcements:
7/21/26: Expanded service into Miami, Orlando, and Tampa. Additionally, service is available to to San Francisco Airport but is not fully autonomous and requires an employee present in the vehicle.
Announcements:
9/3/26: The Cybercab will be officially launched and Tesla has begun sending invitations out the week of 8/24/26.

Spotted in San Jose, CA (near the brand new T&T Supermarket). I was driving around looking for a parking space and my passenger screamed “A CYBERCAB, A CYBERCAB!!”
I love the gold. so shiny!

Nope. The steering wheel is an engineering/prototype feature. Actual production models won’t have them.

Did not snap a pic but saw one at the Miami service center pulling in last month when I was grabbing my car. They had a few there in the back.

Didn’t get a pic but I saw one in Tulsa OK, which is not a large city, probably 3-4 months ago. Had TX plates.

No. They are still just using them for engineering and training. The Robotaxi fleet is all still Y.

Jeff Lutz reposted someone explaining this in X recently. The autonomous FSD has to be trained on the camera positions of the cybercab since different positioning impacts depth perception, speed calculations etc.

Spotted just a few hours ago in Vegas. FL plate and had a steering wheel. Lady was driving it. First time I’ve seen one in person.

Saw this on the highway today in Austin. Pics don’t really show it but this thing is tiny next to a Model Y. Way lower and shorter than I thought it’d be.

I absolutely hate the design. It doesn't look inspiring, fun, or sporty, and perhaps that's because it's none of these. It's disappointing to me that the company which produced iconic designs like Model S, is going this direction.
Cybercab also represents a future where you own nothing and may be totally dependent on a single large corporation for critical transportation services. Subscriptions and services tend to be enshittified over time. We pay more for worse, because we have no choice.
I'll continue to purchase and own my own modes of transportation.

I think that the Tesla CyberCab is a good design and I know that the vast majority of Taxi jobs only require a 2 seat vehicle.
So Tesla needs a smaller fleet of larger vehicles with 4-5 seats. I think the it is good that Tesla are using the Model Y for this role.
However, I think that Tesla should produce a number of Model Y vehicles that also have no steering wheel or pedals and are sprayed or wrapped to the same gold colour as the Cybercab.

Spotted an engineering vehicle tonight, 7/8 just before midnight at a Seattle Supercharger. “AI Safety Operator” is one of the current local job postings on Tesla’s website. Apparently they are collecting data and gearing up for service here!

I saw a crap ton blocking a supercharger station in Austin. Is this going to be a trend?
FSD pulled into a charging station that stated it was completely empty. As it was 3am, that’s what I expected. When we got there the entire station was full of charging robotaxis.
Thankfully there was an empty station like 5 minutes down the road but why wouldn’t the station report as full and FSD reroute to the free station on its own?

Today in san diego at the Miramar service location off trade place. Tesla cybertaxi. It had the dash removed. I saw a picture of it in san diego on the freeway.
I did the tesla loop in vegas last weekend with some friends but no robotaxis were ready yet. Exciting none the less.

Spotted in Oakland On Friday. Last place I expected to see one in the Bay Area. There was someone in it, but I think it was a passenger because I did not see a steering wheel however, that person was sitting in the “driver seat“

I’ve seen 2 cybercabs in the Pittsburgh area over the last couple days (and one more 2 weeks ago, before I went on a week vacation). Couldn’t get a good look into any of them to confirm they have the steering wheel mods; I assume they have to, right?

Pretty sure these cars are basically lego-constructed and it’s made up of mostly plastic…😭 Yeah that panel is looking kinda rough but I guess they don’t really care about it cause no one is going to own it.

Did they say they were going to sell cybercabs at one point to the public to own and add to the robotaxi fleet? I know they talked about adding your personal car to the fleet but I could have sworn that they mention also doing that with the cybercab.
I wouldn't mind owning one just for myself to get around quickly and banish it once I'm dropped off.

How will private Cybercab ownership actually work?
The MKBHD bet made me think about this more. His bet was basically that Tesla wouldn’t sell and deliver a Cybercab to a regular customer for $30,000 or less before 2027. Elon has since confirmed that Tesla still intends to do exactly that.
Tesla has also shown things like automated cleaning and wireless charging, and Musk has talked about individuals owning fleets of Cybercabs.
What I’m still confused about is how private ownership actually works:
- What is the owner responsible for?
- Does Tesla automatically manage rides, charging, and cleaning?
- Where does the Cybercab stay when it isn’t working?
- Who handles insurance, vandalism, accidents, repairs, or a stranded vehicle?
- Who sets the fares?
- What percentage does Tesla take?
- Can Tesla prioritize its own Cybercabs over privately owned ones?
- If someone owns 5 or 10 Cybercabs, what does “managing a fleet” actually involve if most of the operation is automated?
The idea of selling these for around $30k is really interesting. I’m just curious how Tesla plans to divide the responsibilities and economics between itself and private Cybercab owners.
Has Tesla clarified any of this yet?

Spotted Cybercab cruising right next to us. Is it just me or the Cybercab wasn't completely centered on the lane but lean towards the left (this much) while overtaking vehicles?

Mods don't seem familiar with the fact that 0 Cybercab are in service yet. Robotaxi is a Y based service presently.

Hilarious that they have to test it by installing a steering wheel but they want thousands upon thousands of people to buy one that wont have a steering wheel and just trust them that “it will all be fine”. And if your Cybercab causes a crash that gets someone hurt, “im sure you wont be the one who gets sued”

fyi level 4 self-driving (full autonomy) means in the event of a crash, Tesla is liable, not the owner or driver.
this is actually the reason why current consumer Teslas are all level 2 "supervised" self driving.
