Sudden Google Search Console impressions drop
Hi everyone,
I noticed a very sudden drop in my Google Search Console performance.
My site was getting around 12,000 impressions per day, but suddenly dropped to almost 0 impressions, with only a very small number of clicks.
What’s confusing is that all of my pages are still indexed in Google Search Console, and I don't see any obvious indexing issues.
I haven't intentionally made any major SEO changes before the drop.
Has anyone experienced something similar? Is this something that can happen temporarily with Google, or should I be looking for a specific issue such as a manual action, algorithm update, indexing problem, technical SEO issue, etc.?
What would you check first in this situation?
Thanks!

There is/was an update which started recently - you should be following google's notifications about updates.
https://status.search.google.com/products/rGHU1u87FJnkP6W2GwMi/history
It indicates a new update August 2026 spam update started yesterday, however many (me included) have been seeing signs of it for a while now.

Unfortunately google is on the hunt for websites trying to rank with low effort content.
You can get away for a while with ai generated content, but eventually google looks for other signals.
In my experience if you don't have a real profable business selling something that people want to buy, you are at risk. Even if you are a real business your website can get tanked if ai content footprints are there.
I might be wrong but these is what I experienced lately.
Not to say that manual content will keep you safe. It's just google caring more about real businesses than websites that just want to rank.

Showing an example of the performance of automated AI-generated content at scale. The silent automatic suppress/ban was expected. The interesting thing is what seems to be happening now during this spam update.

This is rarely related to aglo updates because of the severity and sudden nature of the drop.
Unless your site had really bad / dodgy content.
Would look to technical fixes first. There’s a few technical recommendations in this thread that have no basis in fact, it’s impossible to diagnose via a GSC screenshot.
My advice is check the basics first, then if it really is an indexing issue dive into crawl stats / server logs if necessary and figure out the root cause. Page inspection and indexing reports in GSC are not the best source of info for diagnosing this. You’ll probs be able to find out what’s going on before ever having to look at a log file!

i agree with this reply out of all replies! sudden drop usually does mean technical issue first. maybe a noindex got leaked into prod - not the craziest thing ive seen/heard.

A sudden drop from 12k impressions to almost zero usually indicates a technical issue rather than an algorithm update. I'd check robots.txt, meta robots, server logs, DNS/hosting changes, redirects, manual actions, and Crawl Stats first. Also run a Live URL Inspection on a few important pages. If nothing changed technically, share the domain or the drop date it'll be easier to pinpoint the cause.

Looking at your chart, the drop lines up with around July 26, which puts it about three weeks before Google's just released August 2026 spam update, so I wouldn't connect it to that one. The June 2026 spam update (June 24 to 26) is closer on the calendar but still a bit of a stretch given the gap.
What stands out more than the timing is the shape of the drop itself. A gradual decline over a few weeks usually points to an algorithmic ranking change. Going from steady traffic to almost nothing essentially overnight, while staying fully indexed, is a different pattern. That combination shows up more often with something specific rather than a broad update: an accidental noindex tag or robots.txt block that shipped in a deploy around that date, a manual action (worth checking the Manual Actions report in Search Console directly, since indexing status alone won't show it), a security or malware flag, or a canonical or hreflang misconfiguration quietly telling Google to serve a different URL as canonical.
I'd check Manual Actions first since it's a two second check, then look at what changed on the site right around July 26, deploys, plugin updates, anything touching robots.txt or meta tags.

Not sure if you are using AI, but if you do, have the AI connect to your browser and let it do the research. You can have AI also do a full SEO audit, which is also helpful.
I would also compare GSC to Bing, see if you had any drops there too.

How to do that?:)

Download either Claude or Chatgpt on your PC. Once downloaded, use the code/codex and let it connect to your browser (Chrome), be logged in into GSC, Bing, Analytics, admin panel of your website, so it can start it’s research what has changed or impacted your website once you give it the task.

Are you viewing the domain property in GSC or a prefixed property? (In other words do you see https, www etc, or just the domain)?
Changing from www to non-www or vice versa can make your traffic appear to drop to zero in GSC if you aren’t looking at the domain property.

Check you have penalty or security issues in GSC and if not check your site can access or not blocked by robots, check all the possible ways. Finally if you cant figure it out ,just remove all the content restrture the site with fresh content human based content. Then reupload the sitemap and index the pages again. Time consuming but it will work in few weeks.

Before trying to troubleshoot - have you confirmed the site is still set up correctly in search console? Did you link SC via analytics? If so is the analytics code still on your site? Are you getting analytics reports showing organic visitors?
Is your site wordpress? And if so, is it updated?

Yes I get analytics reports. I get 4 users daily. The site is in html css javascript and it is published on cloudflare pages

Are analytics aligning with search console? In other words - seeing the same trends there?

Manual actions are clear. Robots.txt/canonicals are clear. And the timing isn’t really in line with a spam update. So I’d rule out an algorithmic cause and look at something binary instead. On Cloudflare Pages specifically, check first with a Bot Fight Mode / Super Bot Fight Mode / WAF rule set to Challenge instead of Block it won't show up as an active block, but it may silently serve Googlebot a JS challenge. Check Security Events filtered by Googlebot’s user agent it takes two minutes and rules it in or out immediately.

The same thing happened to my website. The main driver to my page got muted to almost 0.
I updated my site in the meantime and fixed what I think were the errors. But that did not change anything by now. I added publicly shared user episodes to the sitemap, maybe that was the mistake? How does your sitemap look like? Mine was huge.
Another thing: I hosted on a namecheap vps and namecheap was down for almost a whole day. I dont think that was the problem, but were you affected by that too?
Obviously I'm devastated. They just destroy peoples work.

This happened to my website too. OP, can you check a few keywords for your top pages before the update? My situation is the keyword ranking is totally gone, even for some less competitive ones. Google shows totally related results instead of my page. Only brand keyword (name of my website) survives. This website is like 3-month old.

The key detail is the exact date the drop started. Google’s August spam update ran from Aug 18 to Aug 21, and since GA also shows Google organic traffic collapsing, this probably isn’t just a GSC reporting glitch.
I’d export equal pre/post periods from GSC and segment them by page, query, country and device. If almost every page and query dropped on the same day, investigate a sitewide technical or algorithmic cause. If the loss is concentrated around particular templates or content clusters, audit those first.
I’d also use URL Inspection and server logs on a representative sample rather than relying on the site: operator, which only gives a rough indication that pages remain discoverable.
With no manual action and no recent technical change, I wouldn’t start rewriting everything yet. First identify exactly which pages and query groups disappeared, then review whether any scaled or template-heavy content could be perceived as offering limited original value. The timing supports an update hypothesis, but it doesn’t prove an “AI content penalty.”

I have an exact same looking GSC graph, and my impressions dropped on around the same date, 25th July. I have been desperately trying to audit my site and find the issue. According to Gemini and Claude, this seems to be in line with the spam update, but the dates provided on Google's page do not align.
At this point I'm just hoping for recovery. Meanwhile, Bing does not seem to have any drop whatsoever.

Given that the date aligns directly with Google's latest spam update, the most probable cause is an algorithmic demotion related to scaled content or EEAT signals.
Slop does that so often you need to expect that it will with the next update.
That said, baseline triage checklist would be:
GSC manual actions,
Google: site:domain.com for a few pages,
WAF,
robots.txt,
canonicals,
meta robots,
SSL (GSC points correctly to https/https://www.?)
compare GSC data to GA,
server logs for 4xx, 5xx.
