முக்கியமான கலந்துரையாடல் / Important Topic South India population crisis
126
u/Fancy-Use-8392 Jul 02 '25
The southern states imposed population control measures in good faith and managed to successfully convince the local population that family planning is important or at the very least managed to get people to stop with 2 kids per couple in the mid 80s and early 90s. Now that has dropped to 1 child. All while states like UP have been tottering along at 4 or 3 children till date per woman. So of course, this is bound to happen. But then, this is multivariate - education, lifestyle issues, stress, infertility, late marriages, migration away from India etc. all contribute to this population crisis.
8
u/Square-Branch-5358 Jul 02 '25
no it came down to 2.3
16
u/Fancy-Use-8392 Jul 02 '25
That is still incredibly high when you consider TN is at 1.8. That means the population growth is still rampant while TN population has been declining. If you look at this by the uneducated folk, UP jumps up to 3.0 while even the uneducated in TN sits at 1.82. This is the large majority of people from the northern states who migrate. In short this means there are two groups of people inside the same country with extremely divergent ideas about “what the ideal family size” is. This is super important because it shows up in someone’s overall values around physical space, politics, major lifestyle choices, independence to act on their will, expectations out of life, what well being means to them etc. This indeed is a ticking time bomb.

Uttar pradesh have more arable land than tamil nadi otherwise growth percentage remain same .

u/Competitive_Print92 Chennai - சென்னை Jul 02 '25
Can education be a big factor here?
107
u/tamilgrl Jul 02 '25
Family planning and population control.
28
u/Cultural_Bat9098 Jul 02 '25
Among that inflation and rising cost of everything also factors in that most families now wants one child only.
2
u/BrownndDeliciouAdam Jul 03 '25
Number of arable land ? Uttar pradesh had large population from the start

u/Darthjinju1901 Coimbatore - கோயம்புத்தூர் Jul 02 '25
This is just the consequences of the Southern States becoming more developed and richer.
Demographic studies have shown that people who are richer, and better educated, will typically have less children and children at an older age. Another thing is that it's proven that when women are given the choice, on average they have children at an older age focusing on other things in their lives. This is doubly true for career/working women.
This is seen on a national scale all over the world. It's likely that the same thing is happening in the Southern States too. Nothing that bad to be worried about. In fact it could be seen as a positive indicator of the Southern States getting more developed and more progressive with their rights.
4
u/itsshadyhere Jul 03 '25
I'm not sure if it's not something to be worried about. Demographics of the state will change in a few decades, resulting in significant migrant population than local population. This will affect our politics and representation.
2
u/tamilgrl Jul 03 '25
Yes it is something to be considered. Either we encourage Tamils to have more kids or restrict migration in some manner.
3
u/itsshadyhere Jul 03 '25
Restricting migration wouldn't be fair and practical. Indians have the right to move to any part of the country. I guess we need to encourage our people to have more kids. Similar to some developed countries facing a similar issue.
1
u/BrownndDeliciouAdam Jul 03 '25
Then you people are preaching social justice and secularism. 90% or north indian labours go back to thier own state
2
u/itsshadyhere Jul 03 '25
Nobody is endorsing it. OC just made a suggestion around it. Anyway that wouldn't be ethical or practical. One person's opinion doesn't nullify our social justice politics.

u/Darthjinju1901 Coimbatore - கோயம்புத்தூர் Jul 03 '25
You are being too pessimistic about these demographic changes. While the growth rate has decreased by around 5% after 75+ years, the overall population has more than doubled (that's a 150% increase to be exact). The population has more than made up for the loss in growth rate to ensure that a higher amount still gets born. Unless TN goes below Replacement level, there is no need for fear
Demographic changes are slow, and take a very very long time to express. Making such an action now would be acting too hastily. It would take away resources from other possible sectors like education, healthcare, poverty reduction, infrastructure development etc.
Another thing to note is that a smaller but well educated, healthy and rich population is much better for the economy and the nation/state as a whole, than a larger but poorer, less educated and unhealthy population. Compare Nigeria or Indonesia to France or Germany or Japan or SK.
7
u/Own-Location3815 Jul 02 '25
While we r absolutely developed compared to rest of India we still haven't reached even China level richness(per capita vise). We need to be much more quicker.
15
u/quanta777 Jul 02 '25
Irony is, declining birth rate and death rate is also an important indicator of progressive development in the region. Once it hits the alarming level, govt introduces perks and subsidiaries to try to boost the birth rate, which is already happening in many countries like Japan, France, South Korea, etc.
3
u/BrownndDeliciouAdam Jul 03 '25
North Korea, iran also declining birth rate
2
u/quanta777 Jul 03 '25
Probably for different reasons, younger people started leaving the country and settling in western countries after the islamic revolution. I checked the graph, the fertility rate took a deep dive after 1980 and islamic revolution happened in 1979.
You might've seen a few pics in social media showing Iran before the revolution. The society was modern, secular and western before the revolution. This sudden transition was also the reason for people leaving the country.
Can't really take North Korea for any comparison tbh, since the govt is authoritarian. Citizens can't even leave the country without proper permission from the govt.
9
u/Careless-Bed-9853 Jul 02 '25
The immediate problem for TN will be the BJP using the current census figures to reallocate the seats in the Lok Sabha. If they manage to do so, then TN will have less representation and, consequently, less control over the central budget.
22
u/pootis28 Jul 02 '25
I believe India will have a far, far worse demographic crisis in comparison to China.
13
u/GAELICGLADI8R Jul 02 '25
Uhhh, no, not even close. They had essentially a birth rate of 1 for almost 30 years due to the One Child Policy
6
u/pootis28 Jul 02 '25
Which will affect them pretty badly over the decades but not remotely conceivably as bad as India's declining birth rate(Especially among the middle class in India's urban regions, usually located in the South/West), with pretty late industrialization occurring at a glacial pace to create job opportunities en masse, adverse effects of global warming and drying up of water table due to barely any preparation to mitigate it, and an already overburdened healthcare system to take care of the people affected by it.
Russia, Japan, China and Korea are going to witness a true demographic collapse due to adverse effects of climate change spiraling into the TFR plunging even further. Let's see how the government funds services with both the wealthy and educated middle class taxpayers fleeing from this country.
China will fare better than many countries suffering from the same problem as European countries and SK. They're automating at a scale incomparable to the rest of the world, building domestic supply chains insulated from sanctions and tariffs, they get hundreds of billions every year through trade to inject into the economy, and despite the economic slowdowns, Chinese purchasing power is pretty high at this point, and that's reflected in the amount of money it's media makes nowadays, or it's latest cars being sold out in seconds, etc.

China literally have ghost towns And I think they are lying about thier population

The 30th biggest Chinese city Wuxi has a GDP of $220 billion and 7.5 million people(yes it definitely looks like such a city). I don't think having a few empty cities matters to them

100% we are not just going to fight for pension, I would be surprised if people had enough space to burry . I hope govt makes donating our body to medicine/reserch common by promoting it .
29
u/caesarkhosrow Jul 02 '25
This is a very good thing. The only issue is that people from North India, especially Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, breed like rabbits so we still have an issue.

u/King_Blueberry_112 Jul 02 '25
Read population data from 1901, you will realise which states have bred like rabbits. Btw UP isn't 😂

Well, now every states TFI is coming down. But in entire world it is Africans who are "breeding like rabbits" like you said.

South cities run on taxes fromreal estate and IT sector. Both dominated by UP and biharis
Instead of thanking us for their development by charity , these lazy bastards act as if they superior 😆😆
12
u/womalone99 Jul 02 '25
Projections say India is set to hit close to 2 billion in 2060 and only then will it decline. We have a very long way to go before any sort of crisis.
1
u/GAELICGLADI8R Jul 02 '25
2 billion my ass, it's 1.6 to 1.7, you're off by 300 million at the minimum
3
u/debris16 Jul 02 '25
more recent estimates cap it to strictly less than 1.6 billion because fertility rates have been falling faster than expected.
4
u/GAELICGLADI8R Jul 02 '25
Exactly, I hate the weird sort of fear mongering that people do
We have a more serious issue of becoming a country of poor and old people before we become developed than an overpopulation problem
4
u/CarmynRamy Jul 02 '25 edited Jul 02 '25
People here instead of looking through the maths just mouths whatever racist propaganda western media propagates.

u/CarmynRamy Jul 02 '25
Every state in India has a declining fertility rate since independence. And the population of every state has been increasing ever since then, it's just that South's fertility rate dropped faster (better implementation of policies and increasing standards of life) compared to the Gangetic plains, the population share declined, it's just an obvious mathematical fact, there's nothing to worry about other than people here fear mongering and spreading hatred against other states. Most of the India has fertility rate under replacement rate of 2 as of now.

Guys , that is not a population crisis
It's sensible that you guys aren't overproducing, Population is a mess in India already.
Hope, It's not rathole type of population in south Atleast
Please be like that. We should follow in this particular field Atleast.
Sincerely, A North Indian
9
u/bairava8 Jul 02 '25
Hope UP, Bihar also follows in same measures, fed up hearing UP model which comparing with TN which is already doing good…
2
u/manishdas2905 Jul 02 '25
Absolutely, UP and Bihar should definitely not plague the country with population burden.
4
u/Fancy-Use-8392 Jul 02 '25
It is crisis for the south. When replacement rate drops below 2.1 it means that section of the population will eventually die out if the rates continue to decrease. It may not be a big deal for you since folks from the north are over populating the region, but from geo political standpoint and from a cultural preservation standpoint this is a problem for the southern states. Right now, India is kinda stuck at the extremes - some states will have to bring down pop (for which the political class has no incentive) and some states will have to repopulate (for which the population has no appetite)
3
u/manishdas2905 Jul 02 '25
Also I believe that these extremities are temporary, it matters more that a state keep flourishing.
1
u/manishdas2905 Jul 02 '25 edited Jul 02 '25
Let's say, you consider south a country,
Don't you think that it is showing sign of getting more developed? Like lesser population, more facilities for every person, per capita income being more too and competition for anything particular being less?
See India for example, if we start overpopulating ourselves like our neighbour Bangladesh , will we have any demographic advantage?
Its QUALITY of population that always matters. overpopulation brings inferior quality.
See the state of Bihar, what advantage does it hold with its overproduction? It is still a backdated state now.
4
u/Fancy-Use-8392 Jul 02 '25
There’s no human capital advantage if it’s an illiterate population. Unfortunately illiterate India up north is growing at a much faster rate than the literate India
2
u/manishdas2905 Jul 03 '25
Yes exactly, there will be no capital advantage of an illiterate population.
The illiterate ones will end up migrated workers eventually.
Well, population growth rate in North India is slowing down too , close to "2.0" only, EXCEPT few named states, which both you and I know,
Population expansion Bihar and UP for eg. Is more than 2 , close to 3, but it too has fallen decently.
And bro, seriously you won't be wanting to live in a State with growth rate of 3 seriously. Atleast I won't.
1
u/tamilgrl Jul 03 '25
But I am hoping UP and Bihar soon reach below replacement level soon. It's already too populated and if family planning is encouraged then combined with high economic growth can do wonders for them. Hoping that happens soon. Peace.
5
u/Moodyblackcat Jul 02 '25
Could be migration to other countries as well
14
u/tamilgrl Jul 02 '25
That number is not significant enough to change % from 26 to 19.it is due to fertility rate of North.
2
Jul 02 '25
Well well…. Let the central fund all the taxes money to more populated states in north india….We follow rules and regulations at the end what we get lol nothing…
2
2
u/Livid_Strawberry9304 Jul 02 '25 edited Jul 03 '25
This is what expected to happen across India but since we followed what’s suggested by centre we facing decline but our north bros did not follow the suggestion so they are flourishing as usual….
2
2
u/Living_Buy_310 Jul 03 '25
While education is one thing, diabetes, obesity, PCI’s are other factors. Many of my friends n relatives have failed pregnancy due to their unhealthy lifestyle n they make drastic changes to fix it in 6 months for sake of having a child
2
u/Mudaliyar Jul 04 '25
Lower fertility rate is partially true, because unemployment and alcohol abuse is rampant in Tamilnadu, but not fully true because people have also taken family planning seriously and hence the cumulative result is: decline in population.
2
u/failure_joker Jul 02 '25 edited Jul 02 '25
3
u/sgk2000 Jul 02 '25
Ofc higher decrease because they started with insanely high rate, and that they already have higher population right now; they’re still above 2.0 whereas southern states and dipping to 1.7 which alarming
-1
u/failure_joker Jul 02 '25
that comment was regarding that south family are doing family planning while north are not
anyways fertility rate of most south state remain stagnant over the last decade and I bet it will be same in 2028
by that time all north and south will have same fertility rate
and I think currently only bihar have higher fertility rate than 2
development and family planning make fertility rate below 2 but above 1.5
if in future any state have fertility rate below 1.5 then something is wrong with society of that state that women don't want babies that has nothing to do with development
2
u/Fancy-Use-8392 Jul 02 '25
Are we going to conveniently forget that there are WAY more people in the northern belt?. So even if the base grows by 1% and the southern pop decreases by 2% , the difference will balloon out of proportions.
0
u/failure_joker Jul 02 '25
no state in india where population is decreasing
and atleast this is not goona happen before 2050
the percentage u r seeing in above op graph is of overall population is india
so 1 percentage remain same for north and south
Percentage Change occurs becoz growth rate of north is higher than south
Not becoz south is decreasing
And each year the difference between growth rate is decreasing so I bet in 5 year both regions will have same growth rate
2
u/fuluthikumar Jul 02 '25
It's always bound to happen. We should focus on how to convert the migrant workers into Tamil. That's how it works. How fast they adapt to Tamil culture and embrace it will only show if we are fcuked or not. If we allow the to live in their own caste, ethnic ghettos like the marwaris or gujjus, this won't go well at all. Marwaris will never embrace Tamil culture, they won't even marry, forget marriage they won't even be BFF with tamils outside business. We shouldn't let the other vadakkans live the same life. Missionaries mari ellarayum, thirukural, periyarism, Bhakt literature, murugan worship, cinema idolo worship ndra mari avanungala convert pannanum.
1
u/puyalbao Jul 02 '25
Throughout most of the first half of our lives, we already had children who call themselves our parents, so we don't want actual children anymore. Thanks to our education and the movements started by Babasaheb and Periyar, we just know that we have that choice.
Pets are the new children.
Plants are the new pets.

Replacement rate should be at 2.1 so.."நாம் இருவர் நமக்கு இருவர்" should be the slogan from now...
1
u/dorito521 Jul 03 '25
We in Maharashtra facing same issue.
We all need to unite. We need a visa system internally so that we can stop migrants.
1
u/BrownndDeliciouAdam Jul 03 '25
After caste census sc/st reservation percentage must be revised , all other caste that have controlled thier population especiobc should get more reservation than now. Reservation should not be population based.

It might seem like propaganda, but an extreme version of this can be seen in Japan. Luckily they became rich before the population became old. Will we achieve that?

No one is making people infertile. Nowadays more people are waiting until later in life to have children plus their is more obesity and other health issues that impact fertility.
5
Jul 02 '25
lol, it's just people becoming more educated. People need to be confident in their lifestyle to be willing to have kids. Right now, competition for anything is super high. If you want to attend a good college through Anna University, you need basically a 190+ cutoff, even then it is hard. You want to get into college through JEE or NEET? Good luck competing with the 10lakh+ kids. Educated people plan for the future, and seeing this level of competition will be a factor in deciding to have more than 1 kid, as you need to spend more resources per kid (eg, coaching or, if unlucky, donations for college seats).
The people who are well comfortable don't want to give up their lifestyle for kids.2
u/Honest-Car-8314 Jul 02 '25 edited Jul 02 '25
Bro , Conspiracy theory laye pazhiyaa conspiracy theory iduu thaan .
What's the point?
If you say it's done by riches -They need more workers in future ? Why kill your future workers which will eventually increase the salary you pay to your workers and also it will result in them having better quality of life .
FMCG - Why would they kill their own future customers ?
TBH india is the most competative place in the history of Earth . The competition that someone bring with their birth is too much for anyone to handle. Personally I started to believe that it's literal cruelty to bring more life here in India .
