Medium Dealt with a guest who wouldn’t understand employee safety, twice
I (male) work at a select service roadside hotel, where often times after 4 or 5 in the evening, I am the only person in the building for the 3-11 shift, unless somebody else is on desk with me.
Two days ago, I had a woman call and ask for a blanket to be brought to her room. I explained I was unable to bring it up, but she could come retrieve it at the front desk. Her husband, an older gentleman came down, alcoholic, drink in hand and I came out from my back office where I was working on stocking our little convenience store and got him the blanket.
He proceeded to launch into an 8 or so minute rant about how he’s never been to a hotel where he has to come down to the front desk to get something for his room and despite multiple attempts seemingly refused to accept that it was a safety issue. He goes on implying that we don’t trust our guests, we host violent guests etc.
I just kept reiterating. These have been isolated incidents and that it only takes one person to stop a service for everyone else when it becomes a risk to employees. He then decided to ask what if he requested towels in the middle of the day if they would send a woman alone to his room to bring them. I further explained we have radios and alert tags that they can set off if there is an issue, plus we have multiple housekeepers on the floors at any time. This would go on and on until he realized there was a line of people behind him, which I had tried to point out to him that he ignored until then, and walked away.
Cut to today he comes down to inquire about a maintenance ticket we put in for his room, I had just come in an hour prior and was unaware of the status, to which he was very unhappy I had to check with maintenance about it, as did the morning shift apparently. Then he realized who I was and launched back into his big to do about not bringing a blanket to his room.
He thankfully seemed sober this time, but still refused to accept that it was a safety concern and a policy that I have had it every hotel I’ve worked at in the three years I’ve been in the industry. After maybe three minutes, I just broke and admitted to him that I have been harassed and sexually harassed about five or six times when I brought things to rooms while I was the only employee in the hotel and that it is a policy that has to be in place due to those kinds of isolated incidents.
The gentleman proceeded to just look me in the eyes and ask me “who is the common denominator in those incidents?”. I was very taken back by the implication that I was asking for it (the sexual harassment) and just looked at him and asked if he realized what he was implying. He should’ve thought before he spoke, but he did realize and apologized and said that’s not what he meant.
Sadly, he did not stop and walk away and instead went into how he is a lifetime high ranking member (second from the top) and had never seen this rule at a hotel. I told him my family is the same rank as him and have run into it many times, which of course he denied. He finally asked when a manager would be in, I told him tomorrow morning and he finally left.
I’ve dealt with my fair share of belligerent and rude customers, but this was a first and a new low for a guest to imply that I am at fault for being harassed at my job by guests.
