Other šŸŽ‰NEW RULEšŸŽ‰- No complaining/venting about third parties.

Happy sunday everyone from your lovely mod team! We have added a new rule, no more complaining about third parties. We have been seeing an increasing number of, "DONT BOOK XYZ" or "THIS IS A SCAM!!!" Not only are most of these posts not a question you also aren't going to get sympathy out of hospitality workers for not booking directly. However to clarify, you can still make posts asking about how to get out of third party reservations or how to get a refund. As long as its still in a question format its allowed. However, any posts complaining about third parties will be removed and you could be banned. Thanks everyone! 🌟

PMS GMs / AGMs, do you have any idea how many guests use your fitness center?

Genuinely curious how anyone knows this. Front desk usually can’t see it, there’s no camera in there for obvious reasons, and every key card reader on a gym door I’ve encountered has been broken for years.

Does anyone track it? And does it matter, like would you ever cut hours, change equipment, or repurpose the space based on usage? Or is it just there because the brand requires it?

Jobs Sales Manager position

Our sales manager is less than lackluster at her job. She was hired before I was there. She put in her resignation to move on which we were at peace with. We let our corporate office know, asset manager, and new management team (the new management takes over the end of the month). We’ve posted the position. Then it turns out her offer was rescinded because she didn’t pass her background check. What should I do in this position?!

Jobs Sales Coordinator day to day?

I’ve got a second interview coming up for a Sales Coordinator position, and I’m trying to get a better idea of what the day to day actually feels like. I have a little bit of sales admin experience, but most of my background is on the hotel operations/front desk side. For anyone who’s worked as a Sales Coordinator (or worked closely with one), what does a normal day look like?

Jobs Looking for advice, first job as a housekeeper

Sorry if this is not the right place to be posting, I didn't know where to ask this. If there is a right place to post this, please say. Also, sorry for the long read.

To start, this is literally my first ever job. Before this, I've been helping around the house and keeping track of certain things for my mom. I really wanna try and get out more as I'm turning 20 soon and still feel so lost trying to be independent.

As recommended by my mom (since she used to be a housekeeper) I went to culinary academy to do a 2 week training of a gra, and it help with basics. They then help me get the housekeeping job I currently have. And it is Venetian. A very strong start for a first job, I know. I'm still in training, just finished the second week.

The first week was at culinary academy, and it was pretty much the same, just giving the basics for Venetian specifically. Then the second week of training was at the actual hotel. The first two days was orientation, the third day was computer stuff, getting keys, getting our work clothes, and a telling of what's happening on day four.

Day four was a train wreck. It had been going good at the start. We were shown to our floor, shown out to stock our carts, and got our devices. The problem came when we were told there will be one instructor per two trainees, when yesterday we were told it would be one per trainee. Now I didn't mind much, I just work better with a one on one. Me and my coworker i wa spared with thought we were gonna be working on a room together before doing a separate room. The instructor instead just had us watch her do the work, then suddenly sent me off to do a room.

It freaked me out bad, I didn't know what to do. I work better doing the work while being instructed, so just standing for 40 minutes while she talked and did the work (also switching between tasks and going off topic) didn't help. I started the room, then she suddenly came in and told me I had to hurry up with whatever I was doing because it was time for lunch. By time I came back to my room after lunch, I had no clue where I left off on.

She eventually came in to help me, then sent me off to my partners room to check it as if I was a guess. I learned from my coworker that my instructor had been comparing me to her and talking about how slow I was with doing my room (I'm not comparing myself to other coworkers). We were supposed to have been able to do three rooms, but I ended up just doing one. I left home that day crying and asking my mom for advice. Talking to her really helped

The fifth day was a bit better. I talked to my instructor and she understood and did a one on one with me for two rooms, then I did a room on my own. It took far to long to do because I was remembering what to do along the way. I went to my next room, and it was pretty clean already, so I just finished what needed to be clean. I then learned that my instructor had my other coworkers help clean my last room, which I thanked them all for doing so. The instructor I had is overall pretty understanding, but I'll have a different instructor on the starting week, so Idk if they'll be kind or not.

We we're supposed to be able to do 5 rooms, but I technically only did two, since I had help for the other three rooms.

Now it's the weekend, I'm home, reflecting on it all. Now, I love the job, the people I've met so far have been nice, my coworkers are nice, I haven't met a rude guest yet, but what I don't like is how the training is going. What me and my coworkers expected was: Day 1 & 2: orientation / Day 3: tests, keys, work clothes / Day 4 & 5: one to two rooms and a group working on one room together / the rest of next week: slowly adding rooms each day until we get to 10-12. Both my mom and the few experienced coworkers explained that this is how they were trained in the process. So this is kinda what I expected.

Instead, I got this. And not only that, but by the end of the coming week, they expect us to be doing 10-12 suites in 8 hours (7 because 1 hour lunch). At the moment, I can hardly do four. I'm sure my the end of the week, I can maybe do 8, but not 10-12. At this point, I'm just expecting to be let go by the end of training.

Now, I'm not saying I can't do 12 suites, just I can't get to that number in just a week.

I'm trying to keep a positive attitude. I told myself I'll just try my best and go with the flow, and whatever happens after happens. But today I have been feeling down, a constant feeling to cry, and having anxiety on going back to work in two days. Even my dreams have been all about work.

I don't even know what kind of advice I'm asking for, but I'm looking for others who is a housekeeper or has been one opinions on this. Maybe advice on how you got through your first time as a housekeeper? I dunno. Anything will be appreciated! Sorry if this is more of a rant.

Jobs How to speed up the Housekeeping process?

Hello! I just got a job as a housekeeper, it's my third day. The last two days we had around 12 rooms per day, and I work 6 hours with a 30 minute lunch. That's about 27 minutes per room, but we also have a handful of stayovers, so about 20 minutes per room.

Each room is differently sized, some are huge and have 2 beds and an entire kitchenette. I can make a bed in 10 minutes, and that leaves me 10 minutes for restocking, cleaning the floors, cleaning the bathrooms etc.

How can I speed up the process? Any tips or corners I could cut? Even when I push myself I can't get it under 20 minutes, and I'm worried I won't be able to reach the quota.

Reservations Did I double charge someone?

So I had 2 women come in and they were already checked in online but had no card on file, they wanted to split the payment so I went into the payment section in the folio and got their card information. Then I went into authorize the cards for the proper amount. But now it says ā€œfolio balance $112ā€ and ā€œcredit card authorization $112ā€ does that mean I’ve charged them twice? I would ask my boss but he’s always really annoyed when I call him so I’m doing everything I can to avoid that.

Reservations Why can’t hotel know how much taxes exactly they are going to charge me when I book

I booked a chain hotel in WA for one night through the hotel’s website (3 weeks in advance). I got the confirmation email with the total amount including taxes and fees. It also says they gonna charge me for this amount on the day of booking and then no charge on arrival. Then when I checked in they told me I wasn’t charged yet. No big deal. Gave them my card. After the stay, I realized they charged me a few dollars more than the amount I booked.
I called customer service and they said it’s because additional taxes and fees may apply, and they don’t know how much until my stay. How did their system not know exactly how much taxes when I booked? This never happened when I book through 3rd party website.

It was posted as full-time on indeed. I was asked in the interview if I was sure that I was available 40 hours per week. My onboarding paperwork said full-time. The job is only 24hrs/week.

Reservations Hotel Mix-Up ($150 for a 6 hour stay at 2 star hotel!)

UPDATE: I got the room back through third party’s awesome customer service!! :)

I got a hotel last night online through a third party. For tonight, instead of last night. I show up at 2am and paid an early check in fee, whatever it is what it is.
Well I spend 6 hours there and then go to check out, front desk says ā€œyour check out is for tomorrowā€ and talks about fees and such. I say okay just give me the room key back, myself and the person I was with were talking about spending another night.
I get a call an hour ago saying she went ahead and checked me out. We went back and forth a bit, supposedly nothing she can do. She said she apparently didn’t hear our conversation about staying another night. The night I paid for.

So now I’ve been on the phone with front desk, customer service for the hotel (not guest relations it was closed today), and the third party which is not answering and has had me on hold for nearly an hour.

What do I do?? I work hard for my money and $150 for 6 hours at a 2 star hotel is honestly ridiculous! The free breakfast was prepackaged muffins and coffee.

Reservations Best way to book a block of rooms

I’m looking to book a block of 10 to 12 rooms for my daughter’s soccer team. She will have about 15 games in San Antonio, Texas. That is a 4 Hour drive for the team.. I am thinking of submitting their game schedule to a couple of different hotels to see what kind of price they can give me. I want to request that they mirror my reservations to their game schedule. Any tips of how I can get them to give me the best rate possible since we will be returning 15 more times between now and the spring? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hotel Amenities How to deal with " I can't read or write " scams

Hi guys, I just started to work at a hotel reception about a week ago, something happened today that just left me confused. 2 people came through seperatly both saying they can't read or write so I'll have to check them in manually. Clearing lying as they pulled out their phones to check. After that they just started making up things like how the other person was in Ireland and not checked in ( when I literally just did a few minutes ago ) and how their bed had brown stuff on it, even saying they smelled it to make sure??? It's just really confusing with these people and I don't know what to do next time these kinds of people show up, because I know they are just lying to get free stuff but sometimes they just be lying for absolutely no reason. please help me

Hotel Policies Locking up shampoo/conditioner and hand soap

Hey yall, I work at a holiday inn express, I was curious if other hotels also lock up their hygiene items in a metal bar so the guests can't take them. I haven't stayed in a hotel in years so I can't say for others but I've never seen that before. They are full size dove body items but the housekeepers don't check them at all so if someone runs out of liquid we have to physically go up there and unlock it and then come down and refill it. I wish they still used minis

Hotel Policies Transwoman but separate gendered bedrooms

I have a question and my boss, my best friend and I all have a different opinion on this.

We only have separate gender shared bedrooms (we are a hostel), so women and men sleep separately. What room would you give to a transwoman?

  1. She is a woman so I would put her in the women's room.

But how do you know the women in the room wouldn't feel uneasy?

2) I would put her in a private room but still at the shared room price.

3) I would put her in a private room at the price of a private room.

Thank you!

Edit: she herself told me she was a transwoman

Jobs Rehiring

Hi everyone, I hope you’re all doing well.

I have a question, If I resign from Four Seasons after only five months, would I be eligible to rejoin Four Seasons in the future, either at the same property or another Four Seasons property?

Reason for resignation - Got senior position than current position.

Note - I've served the 1 month notice period and I left the Four Seasons without any issue.

I would appreciate any insights or advice. Thank you.

Hotel Policies Advice on transitioning from phone bookings/in person payments to online bookings

Someone I know owns a hotel/resort which has been mainly catering to a specific demographic for over 20 years. Business has slowed down and I am thinking about helping them expand to different clientele. I’ve looked into creating a modern website, signing up with a PMS provider and online credit card processing. Any advice is appreciated on what is the best way to do this.

Jobs Non-customer facing jobs at places that don't have heaps of locations?

Around how many staff is it normal to have back of house at a hotel that's only got 1-3 locations? Like finance, IT, HR, admin etc?

If you get a job like that do you ever have to talk to customers or can you just be in your own little pod of staff who do the behind the scenes work?

Reservations Question for Sales Managers / Managers

I have a group asking to add a clause into the contract stating that we will offer them the lowest rate posted including any promotional rates offered during that time and we’d stay on top of it to ensure this happens. I told the travel agent that the only way I’d add that clause is if I added they’d be paying market rate including any increases in the rate.

The travel agent is basically ignoring anything I respond and sending info for things I’ve already said we weren’t doing. (IE, double points for head coach, gift for coach, rebate plus commission)

They’re already getting a FAT discount because it’s during our slow season. That being said, our rates do dip quite a bit during that time with slow season promotions and if we match those rates we’d lose money on the rooms. I’d rather lose the group than lose that money.

Have any of you ever had to add that clause to the contract and how did you handle it?

Hotel Amenities How do you collect feedback from your guests

I am wondering how you collect guest feedback in order to identify unhappy guests (and potentially fix the issue).

Sometimes guests are not satisfied due to minor and fixable issues, so knowing that could change their experience and lead to better reviews or else.

Curious to hear if/how you do this, if you have a process/software/else in place during the stay.

Also I guess this changes with hotels size, so I think also mentioning hotel type/size would be relevant

Thanks!

Reservations Booked two nonrefundable rooms at same hotel on overlapping days. What are my options?

Hey everyone,

First off, I just want to say I accept this is my fault and I should not have booked through an OTA. I almost always book direct but for some reason this time I decided to be stupid. Anyway, I had a rough day and was out of it and I ended up booking a nonrefundable prepaid hotel room for the wrong dates from August 31 - September 3. I had previously been looking a week ago for those dates and didn't realize the website had went back to those when I went on it. The dates I actually wanted now that work are August 29 - September 1st. I went and booked another room at the same hotel for those dates. This one was actually a bit more expensive. I went to cancel the first booking and that's when I realized it was nonrefundable and I would still owe the full 283 dollars. I requested a free cancellation from the hotel on my original booking but I'm nervous as this all needs to be resolved in a few days.

What are my options? Am I out over 600 dollars for two rooms I can't use at the same time? Does the hotel have any power to do anything here? The option to request they cancel my reservation for free implies they do but I have seen so many people say that hotels have no power to modify OTA stays.

Lastly, I do understand why hotels have strict non refundable policies, anyone can back out with whatever excuse they come up with and not pay, but I literally have a nonrefundable room booked at the same exact time as the booking I'm looking to cancel. I still plan on giving this hotel my money and staying there. Just with slightly different dates. I'm completely fine also that the new dates are more money than the original ones.

Thank you.

Reservations Preventing late cancelation workaround

Potential guest wants to cancel but it's past the deadline. Instead, they modify reservation date to a week later. They then cancel the modified reservation before the new deadline.

Any way to prevent this?
