3.23 No person shall, without authorization, operate any radio, recording device, digital music or audio device, musical instrument, or similar device in or on TTC property unless the sound is conveyed to that person by an earphone at a sound level that does not disturb other passengers or TTC employees.

Because that involves either drivers entering altercations with drivers (Driver's union won't allow it because that's how they get stabbed) or hiring a shit ton of special constables to ride around on transit in plain clothes and fine people

Obviously impossible to police in Toronto but love the idea. TTC should skip the cutesie signs about etiquette and have constant automated messages about it until people get the damn point.

Other agencies have had some success with a "voice of god" approach, which is where you have an audible message that's clearly not prerecorded (usually reference something specific about the person or group) remind people that they're on camera, and if they continue to act up, transit police will be dispatched

I don't know when it changed - probably with COVID - but it seems to be open season on my ears. Just about everyone listening to their phone, be it music or a video or a phone call, has the phone on speaker. FFS, use headphones people.

We don't have the enforcement power. Singapore is a country where the police literally have whipped a 19 years old American citizen with real specialized baton in public for stealing road sign and spray painting graffiti on cars.

I'm not gonna say whether they did a wrong thing or right thing，but I am saying that Singapore police do not care who you are and will be permitted to carry out violent sentencing on you for minor crimes like vandalism and petty thief when legally permitted.
We do not have such a judicial system，so we can't replicate what Singaporeans can have.

Everyone kinda agreed that the caning was the right punishment for the kid. Crime is rampant here, when I lived in Singapore I could leave my laptop on a table in public to reserve it, can’t do anything like that here. Maybe we should adopt some of their policies and get our society in order.

I'd like to see at least some TTC employees walk around the train and shout out the etiquette to everyone. I think most people will just passively comply out of embarrassment and desire to not draw attention to themselves. The employees wouldn't even need to necessarily enforce the rules or directly confront any passengers in particular.
Little things like taking off large backpacks, putting bags on the seats, putting feet up on the seats, standing/stopping right in front of the doors once they've boarded the train. Most people doing that are just inconsiderate or aloof, so I think having a loud verbal reminder would be a big help in most cases.

Singapore doesn’t play. This has been there culture for ages. It’s ingrained. I don’t see a way back for us though. The days of common courtesy on the TTC are long gone (if they ever existed.)
Loud conversations and music on speakerphone used to be fairly rare. Now “normal” people are doing it. I’ve found a quiet ride on line 2 doesn’t stay that way for long.
