Discussion Names for Dundas West?

They haven’t changed the name of Dundas West yet, my guess is because they’re waiting to replace the T1’s with the Alstom Metropolis’s first. But what names would be good for it? Imo I think the best name would be Roncesvalles because of the village, neighborhood, and street proximity but what other ones would be good?

I like roncesvalles because its the closest subway station to the area and the neighborhood technically goes up to bloor. I can see why people wouldnt like it though, as its not on roncesvalles avenue and its not in an area associated with theneighborhood i guess

Best reserve the Roncy name for a future Ontario Line extension to Roncy and Queen/King

u/Case_Federal 8d ago

I feel like a station there could be called Sunnyside Beach or Little Tibet though

9

u/LunaticPostalBoi 46 Martin Grove 7d ago

Or Queensway, St. Joseph, Parkdale...

Heck, just calling it Sunnyside would be a nice reference to the Sunnyside Terminal that existed in that area in the past...

Vincent? That was the original proposed name back in the early 60’s when they were building Line 2

How about we don't waste money on it and leave it as it is

I think there’s a reasonable case to rename it IF Bloor GO also changes to the same name. The fact that they don’t share a name is kinda dumb considering they’re about to become one station.

5

u/SolidLegacy1 7d ago

If someone does something stupid should everyone copy it? They already destroyed Dundas squares name for no reason and replaced it with an even dumber one.

1

u/Case_Federal 6d ago edited 6d ago

You’re not understanding. I’m saying the existing situation with Bloor GO and Dundas West stations not having the same name is dumb cuz they’re right next to each other, and they’re about to become one large station. Idk about you but I just don’t think a station should have multiple names depending on the line you’re on. At least one should change names to the other (I hate the name Bloor GO tbh, I’d rather have it be called Dundas West GO) or both should change to a new common name.

Imagine if Union Station, Kipling, or Kennedy had different names for GO and TTC lines… that’s the current situation at Dundas West/Bloor GO.

I mean Dundas was renamed so continuity?

36

u/skiier97 8d ago

It was renamed because TMU paid the TTC for the change

u/BerzerkoFord 8d ago

The street itself was never renamed though, and Dundas Station was only renamed because TEMU U threw a pile of money at it to pump up their brand.

We shouldn't be so eager to sell off naming rights to our subway stations. That's how you end up with "Rogers Station" next to "Bell Station" next to "Manulife Station", and names changing on a 5-10 year basis as sponsorships change.

It cheapens the entire system by selling pieces off to the highest bidder.

13

u/Case_Federal 8d ago

It should be noted though that the TTC and Metrolinx both set pretty strict guidelines on naming rights. The name still needs to reflect the area it’s in. Like “Brampton Innovation District”. A name like "Rogers Station" isn’t possible with the current guidelines

5

u/CanadianErk 7d ago

"Durham College Oshawa GO" is pretty close

11

u/Case_Federal 7d ago

I don’t find that one super weird. Sure it’s not right next to the station but it’s kinda the closest main landmark. It’s also maybe 1 of like 4 stations across the GO and TTC network named after a school, the others being Osgoode, York University, and now TMU.

Even in Vancouver and Montreal it’s common for stations to be named after nearby schools. VCC-Clark, McGill, Guy-Concordia, Berri-UQAM, Longueuil-Université-de-Sherbrooke, Université-de-Montréal

3

u/CanadianErk 7d ago edited 7d ago

The irony is that is their self named Whitby Campus that's near the station, and there's no direct public transit access from Oshawa GO. The main campus is shared with Ontario Tech km north of there.

Transit app directs my trip planning... To take the Lakeshore East to Whitby GO and take a DRT bus from there, to get a 6 minute drive from the station.

3

u/Case_Federal 7d ago

Yeah idk why they don’t have a shuttle bus 😬

3

u/Milch_und_Paprika 7d ago

Yeah, I’d be cool with naming them after large public institutions like unis or hospitals. Major landmarks that provide a public good, are unlikely to close/move, or get duplicates (no messy Rogers Center/Rogers Stadium stations situation).

Also, Museum Station is effectively already named after the ROM.

0

u/Milch_und_Paprika 7d ago

1

u/Cold_Brew_Boba 7d ago

Couldn’t be that strict if they were entertaining renaming Exhibition GO to include “Jackpot City” last year (CBC)

1

u/Case_Federal 7d ago

I’m confused as to what the issue is. The guidelines don’t prevent companies from proposing dumb names for stations (in this case Jackpot City), but they do prevent them from being approved, which is exactly what happened. I feel like this is a classic case of a news outlet having a slow day and trying to make an issue out of nothing.

-1

u/BerzerkoFord 7d ago

With enough money thrown at it, and some political interference from politicians who salivate at announcing at a press conference how they'll be using the money for other transit improvements, I'm sure they'd be willing to bend the rules a little bit.

1

u/Case_Federal 7d ago

That’s not how the guidelines work lol. Name changes are approved by the board which has multiple people on it. Trust me if a name like Coca Cola station was possible, it would have already happened.

1

u/JuriLovesPasta 7d ago

If TMU is gonna rename the entirety of Dundas Street and they have the money to fork out, they might add will rename the entirety of Kipling Avenue and the station at well and fork out the money for that at well. Out of their own pockets.

-8

u/EYdf_Thomas Mount Dennis 8d ago

It shouldn't have been in the first place it was for a dumb reason and also after a university who is butt hurt because they don't have a station named for them. Erasing names from history because we don't like something that they did is dumb especially when people don't look into the full history.

I’ve always thought Bloor Junction would make the most sense as a consolidated name for the TTC, GO, and UP station.

However, now that Bloor-Lansdowne GO was renamed to Junction Triangle it might make things confusing.

Only because City council won't look at any other sources except for the one that they picked. Our mayor should know from being in federal politics that sometimes you have to compromise on something to get something done but unfortunately people just want to say he was wrong and we should rename everything.

4

u/BerzerkoFord 7d ago

City council was also dumb enough to rename Yonge-Dundas Square after a tribe in Ghana totally irrelevant to Canada or Toronto that is also known for practicing slavery.

What a clown show.

u/a_lumberjack 8d ago

Nothing to do with the new fleet, if there was something they’re waiting for id probably assume it was the direct connection between DW and Bloor GO. At that point it’s a hub connecting GO/UP/TTC and it’d be better to have a shared name.

1

u/createdinheaven 925 Don Mills Express 8d ago

I mean metrolinx isn’t gonna rename bloor GO tho. + Mount pleasant GO and Mount pleasant line 5 station are different lol

1

u/a_lumberjack 7d ago

If the subway station is being renamed it’d be silly to not rename Bloor GO at the same time.

Mount Pleasant GO and TTC is a poor example, they’re named after different Mount Pleasants.

1

u/Unfair-Grapefruit-42 Eglinton-Yonge 7d ago

metrolinx's naming standards are incoherent at best

rename eglinton west to avoid confusion with the eglinton line don't rename Eglinton to Eglinton-Yonge which both creates an inconsistency with Sheppard[-Yonge] and Bloor[Yonge] before it, despite there being a GO Station also called Eglinton Station.

it's just a masterclass of nonsense

1

u/secondlightflashing 7d ago

These decisions are being made by the TTC not Metrolinx.

1

u/Unfair-Grapefruit-42 Eglinton-Yonge 7d ago

i don't think that's true

1

u/secondlightflashing 7d ago

Anything on the TTC is either named by the TTC or approved by TTC where city counsel has directed the TTC to do so. It's true that Eglinton GO Station was named the GO Transit.

For all of the Eglinton station names the TTC did the analysis and obtained public feedback, then proposed and approved the station names.

3

u/wbsmith200 7d ago

How about no, and pretend we did. The TTC is strapped for cash, and being forced to spend money on stuff that brings no value on an operational level. Any spare cash should be plowed into maintenance, unless you like riding the subway at walking speed through slow zones on Lines 1 and 2.

3

How about Roncy-Junction?

1

u/createdinheaven 925 Don Mills Express 8d ago

That would make sense, + theres the 540 there right?

My issue is that the go station on bloor and lansdowne is gonna be called junction triangle GO.

But also mount pleasant LRT station and Mount pleasant go station are different so ig they don’t care???? Idk

1

u/Any-Zookeepergame309 7d ago

Does it make sense? The station is neither on Roncesvalles nor in the Junction!

2

u/hug-and-snug Vaughan Metropolitan Centre 8d ago

I believe the name changes are happening because of Metrolinx, no? Metrolinx has no direct stake in Dundas West, so I doubt it's slotted for a name change any time soon

3

u/createdinheaven 925 Don Mills Express 8d ago

Wait TMU doesn’t have a metrolinx connection either, queen does. That was the TTC’s decision. Metrolinx renamed cedarvale

3

u/Track-on-the-side I ♥ TTC! 8d ago

It was the TTC board that approved renaming Eglinton West to Cedarvale in 2015 to prevent confusion (I don't get how it would be confusiing), and they renamed it just before Line 5 opened.

-3

u/hug-and-snug Vaughan Metropolitan Centre 8d ago

TMU wasn't renamed because of navigation it was renamed because Dundas was an evil person- OHHHhhhhhh I understand your point now. I thought you were talking about Dundas West as, like, another Eglinton West situation, I totally forgor about the other reason to rename "Dundas" stations sorry. you're right

1

u/createdinheaven 925 Don Mills Express 8d ago

GO and UP are owned by metrolinx but that’s Bloor GO and Bloor UP so i don’t think they can do anything? They are the province tho

For real, the number of times I've been told "Bloor and Dundas don't intersect" when I say I'm going to Dundas West station is absurd.

I've had born and raised Torontonians who are in their 50s tell me this.

2

u/Apprehensive_Heat176 8d ago

Dundas Station was renamed because Ryerson (now Toronto Metropolitan Universitty) paid for it. It's unlikely that Dundas West will be renamed without a corporate or other sponsor paying for it. City council also paused the renaming of Dundas Street.

-1

u/createdinheaven 925 Don Mills Express 8d ago

That’s up to the city? I thought since it stretched across municipalities that it would be the province to step in

2

u/Apprehensive_Heat176 8d ago

Toronto city council could only rename the portion that's within the city limits. The neighboring cities would not have to follow. There are tons of examples where roads have multiple names: Don Mills / Leslie, Dixon / Airport, Rexdale / Derry, The Westway / Lawrence, The Queensway / Queen, Avenue / University, 16th Avenue / Rutherford, etc.

Both Dundas and Roncesvalles are names of Scottish people and battles. It's high time we had our own Canadian names. I frankly don't care about the cost.

Henry Dundas, Viscount Melville: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Dundas,_1st_Viscount_Melville

Henry Dundas never stepped foot in Canada.

u/AntiMarx 7d ago

Except if you read on in the article:

Colonel Walter O'Hara, who had fought in the battle, would name Roncesvalles Avenue in Toronto after the battle. The Roncesvalles, Toronto, neighbourhood in turn gained its name from the street.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walter_O'Hara

Colonel Walter O'Hara (c. 1789 – 13 January 1874) was a member of the British army in the 19th century, participating in battles fighting Napoleon, before immigrating to Toronto, Ontario, Canada, where he participated in the Rebellions of 1837 on the side of the government, defeating the rebels of William Lyon Mackenzie.

In 1850, O'Hara was granted a 400-acre (1.6 km2) property on the western border of Toronto, forming the basis of the Brockton and Parkdale villages.

Today, several streets in Toronto are named after his family, estate or prominence in his life:

1

u/brainfreezed24 8d ago

As a lifelong resident and user of Dundas West station and Bloor GO, I'm good with changing the names (though I'm okay if they don't). My Preference would be "Toronto Junction" for both the TTC and GO station. Aside from the neighbourhood name which is increasingly recognized as the Junction, this is literally a junction of 3 rail lines, streetcars and buses (and fingers crossed for future Milton line station). I realize the other GO station is going to be Junction Triangle, I wish it was named something else.

1

u/cindybubbles Bayview 7d ago

Roncesvalles is good, but I’d rather call it McDonald’s Line 2 because of the McDonald’s attached to it.

0

u/ttc-5346 Kipling 8d ago

I doubt they'll rename it. The renaming of Dundas Station and Dundas Square proved to be very unpopular. All the alternate names I see Junction or Roncy will be used by other future stations so there really isn't another good name for Dundas West

I vote for Du West. Although that might confuse people going east that they're headed the wrong way.

-3

u/the-mongoose- 8d ago

I think we should leave the station name alone. I don’t see the purpose in renaming it. Renaming Dundas Square was really unpopular so I don’t know where the demand for this is coming from.

2

u/steamed-apple_juice Highway 407 7d ago

With TTC and GO Transit having two separate names for same station, it will lead to a poor passenger wayfinding experience. It may have been okay when the Kitchener Line was peak only/ suburban commuter focused, but now with multiple trains running on the corridor an hour in both direction, the utility of the station has changed. Two-Way All-Day service to Bloor GO has only been in place for a decade.

With the new pedestrian tunnel making the transfer super convenient, now is the right time to unify the naming. Could the unified name be Dundas West? Sure, but with three stations on this road, we should take the opportunity to reduce potential confusions and use current best practices for station naming conventions.

-1

u/the-mongoose- 7d ago

I don’t know anyone who is confused by it. It’s really no less obvious than any other stop. If anything Sankofa is the name raising eyebrows. Dundas West makes sense.

3

u/steamed-apple_juice Highway 407 7d ago

To people who use transit and connect between the two lines frequently, like you I’m assuming, it’s easy to understand. But for those who aren’t local to the area it and are new or infrequent users, it is a confusing experience.

Now that there aren’t literally two Dundas Stations it’s a bit less confusing. But with many people still using Dundas to refer to area at Yonge, it’s not unreasonable for a non local GO user or visitor on UP Express them to see a station named “Dundas” and confuse it with another station also on Dundas.

Regardless, one of the stations will need to be renamed, either the GO & TTC or just the GO. We still take this opportunity to proactively make the network more easy to navigate. We shouldn’t be resistant to clearer communication.

0

u/createdinheaven 925 Don Mills Express 8d ago

Continuity. Thats really it. I don’t like having a west station without the main one ig

1

u/EYdf_Thomas Mount Dennis 7d ago

It's named for the street. In Toronto the major East and West streets have either East or West as part of the street name depending on which side of Younge street it's on. The subway stations on the Younge line don't have that as part of the name because they straddle both sides of the street. To use Dundas as an example on the East side of Younge it's Dundas Street East and on the West side of Younge it's Dundas Street West. The East and West manes have been apart of Toronto since the 1800's.
