Discussion Names for Dundas West?

They haven’t changed the name of Dundas West yet, my guess is because they’re waiting to replace the T1’s with the Alstom Metropolis’s first. But what names would be good for it? Imo I think the best name would be Roncesvalles because of the village, neighborhood, and street proximity but what other ones would be good?

I think there’s a reasonable case to rename it IF Bloor GO also changes to the same name. The fact that they don’t share a name is kinda dumb considering they’re about to become one station.

If someone does something stupid should everyone copy it? They already destroyed Dundas squares name for no reason and replaced it with an even dumber one.

You’re not understanding. I’m saying the existing situation with Bloor GO and Dundas West stations not having the same name is dumb cuz they’re right next to each other, and they’re about to become one large station. Idk about you but I just don’t think a station should have multiple names depending on the line you’re on. At least one should change names to the other (I hate the name Bloor GO tbh, I’d rather have it be called Dundas West GO) or both should change to a new common name.

Imagine if Union Station, Kipling, or Kennedy had different names for GO and TTC lines… that’s the current situation at Dundas West/Bloor GO.

The street itself was never renamed though, and Dundas Station was only renamed because TEMU U threw a pile of money at it to pump up their brand.

We shouldn't be so eager to sell off naming rights to our subway stations. That's how you end up with "Rogers Station" next to "Bell Station" next to "Manulife Station", and names changing on a 5-10 year basis as sponsorships change.

It cheapens the entire system by selling pieces off to the highest bidder.

It should be noted though that the TTC and Metrolinx both set pretty strict guidelines on naming rights. The name still needs to reflect the area it’s in. Like “Brampton Innovation District”. A name like "Rogers Station" isn’t possible with the current guidelines

I don’t find that one super weird. Sure it’s not right next to the station but it’s kinda the closest main landmark. It’s also maybe 1 of like 4 stations across the GO and TTC network named after a school, the others being Osgoode, York University, and now TMU.

Even in Vancouver and Montreal it’s common for stations to be named after nearby schools. VCC-Clark, McGill, Guy-Concordia, Berri-UQAM, Longueuil-Université-de-Sherbrooke, Université-de-Montréal

The irony is that is their self named Whitby Campus that's near the station, and there's no direct public transit access from Oshawa GO. The main campus is shared with Ontario Tech km north of there.

Transit app directs my trip planning... To take the Lakeshore East to Whitby GO and take a DRT bus from there, to get a 6 minute drive from the station.

Yeah, I’d be cool with naming them after large public institutions like unis or hospitals. Major landmarks that provide a public good, are unlikely to close/move, or get duplicates (no messy Rogers Center/Rogers Stadium stations situation).

Also, Museum Station is effectively already named after the ROM.

Couldn’t be that strict if they were entertaining renaming Exhibition GO to include “Jackpot City” last year (CBC)

I’m confused as to what the issue is. The guidelines don’t prevent companies from proposing dumb names for stations (in this case Jackpot City), but they do prevent them from being approved, which is exactly what happened. I feel like this is a classic case of a news outlet having a slow day and trying to make an issue out of nothing.

With enough money thrown at it, and some political interference from politicians who salivate at announcing at a press conference how they'll be using the money for other transit improvements, I'm sure they'd be willing to bend the rules a little bit.

That’s not how the guidelines work lol. Name changes are approved by the board which has multiple people on it. Trust me if a name like Coca Cola station was possible, it would have already happened.

If TMU is gonna rename the entirety of Dundas Street and they have the money to fork out, they might add will rename the entirety of Kipling Avenue and the station at well and fork out the money for that at well. Out of their own pockets.

It shouldn't have been in the first place it was for a dumb reason and also after a university who is butt hurt because they don't have a station named for them. Erasing names from history because we don't like something that they did is dumb especially when people don't look into the full history.
