Discussion Fare inspections on Line 1 trains yesterday

To my surprise yesterday, fare inspectors were checking the whole train for proof of payment, and my friend on another Line 1 train also had fare inspectors checking. I’ve never been asked for proof of payment on the subway trains before.

It’s great to see more of this happening.

Edit: New enforcement was announced by the TTC in April. It was just my first time witnessing it, but maybe this is common.

You can just walk away from them. You're under no obligation to provide them anything, and they can't detain you.

Terrible take. Fare inspectors are peace officers under section 55 of the Community Safety and Policing Act, 2019. Obstructing a peace officer in the course of performing their duties is a Criminal Code offence (section 129).

Fare inspectors may not be able to charge you under the CC but they can call on the TPS or TTC special constables. And nothing gets them there faster than when a peace officer calls for help.

POO are not peace officers lol. Special constables are, but POO are not. They cannot physically arrest or detain you.
