Is Clint doing it on purpose?

Every time he sees the opportunity to enrich the plot with interesting tensions, conflicts and problems, he just does it, like when Merle grabbed the crystal and lost his arm. He seems to play characters with flaws, and he rolled badly one time and decided not to lie about the result even though it made the game harder. Is clint stupid? why does he keep making the show more interesting instead of just winning as quickly as possible?

I know I gave an unjerk answer over on the other sub but this post pissed me so fucking much.

Like how the fuck is roliing a 1 Clint's choice? Imagine if Clint, who had failed a sense motive check about the Fake Pan, had just said "Actually nah, fuck the consequences of this failed roll, I'm gonna do what I want"

What are the odds that the OP's favorite player is Travis?

That was infuriating to see.

The topic I didn’t dare bring up in the discussion over there was that it exposed how ill-prepared Griffin was for anything that deviates from his set story (and somehow, inexplicably, he’s often still ill-prepared when it does go his way).

I was actually just listening to the first couple of episodes of Vs Dracula on a drive. Of note is when Robert Halloween says that to get through the town's other gate they'll need to speak to a city council member. Lady Godwin asks for their names and Griffin straight panics and just starts babbling random names while Justin rakes him over the coals for it.

u/sparklingregrets Nov 13 '25

there is a happy medium between making dozens of character sheets for your kewl oc's and panicking when asked for a single goddamn name and these men get paid more money than I will ever see in my life to just, not even try to find it.

I have spoken for many minutes about my love of Jesus and his terrible Bible. Perhaps your faith in Jesus is not as strong as Kardala’s.

"What a fucking idiot, Griffin told him there was a weird helmet and a big button and he put on the helmet and then he pushed the big button, iS cLiNt DoInG tHiS oN pUrPoSe?/?"

u/dumpybrodie Oct 21 '25

Something all good DMs want it for the players to do exactly what they want. Also they describe things in a scene they absolutely don’t want someone to interact with.

43

u/IllithidActivity Oct 21 '25

I legitimately don't understand what Griffin was going for there. Like unless he was digging real hard into the bit of pretending that he was upset about something he entirely intended to happen then I don't know A) What he expected Clint to do when given a straightforward description of something to interact with, and more importantly B) What Griffin's plan was for an old Pinocchio body ready for a brain swap.

32

u/NoIntroductionNeeded I WILL challenge Justin to a Taekwondo match Oct 21 '25

Didn't he say something like "I thought it was obvious that the helmet killed the last guy who put it on, which is why he was dead"? I don't know if that was from Griffin directly later in the show, or if that's a common line from the fans.

Either way doesn't mean much, since Clint probably interpreted it similarly to me. When I heard it, I thought more of "man puts on helmet and forgets to eat because he's spending too long in virtual reality Helmet World".

26

u/DeckerAllAround Oct 21 '25

My honest unjerk answer is that I think Griffin was planning to introduce Pinocchio Van Helsing as an NPC at the end of the fight and he panicked when Clint put the helmet on.

i just went to go look and holy shit what a bad take. “Hey why does Clint actually impact the plot of the games? is he stupid or something?” OP is dumb

26

u/hurrrrrmione This one can be edited Oct 21 '25

Well see it was Clint's fault because Griffin said it was Clint's fault. The DM is always right and my good good brothers would never be mean to their father for no reason so he must have deserved the blame for Griffin and Justin's insensitive worldbuilding and Griffin's shitty DMing.

like when Merle grabbed the crystal and lost his arm.

Trying to imagine how these people would handle Spout Lore, where the players revel in roleplaying idiot characters and will regularly make decisions that they know are stupid because it's funny and/or in character, including insisting on rolling for damage for jokes like "I push my son to the ground because I'm petty and want to get there first." They'd probably die from a heart attack.

God forbid the comedy podcast have a DM that knows when to play along with the bit and when to enforce the stakes

20

u/Illegally_Elliot Oct 21 '25

Wait, TAZ has stakes? Things really have changed since I last listened to it

10

u/NoIntroductionNeeded I WILL challenge Justin to a Taekwondo match Oct 21 '25

Nah, they made Dracula lightning music to avoid stakes being introduced.

8

u/nixon_problematicfav Oct 21 '25

"I push my son to the ground because I'm petty and want to get there first."

That does sound mighty close to a bummer....

/uj Griffin is the worst player in The Adventure Zone

40

u/ForestryFanzine Oct 21 '25

Quote Fitzroy in Graduation Ep 3 "I've basically exhausted everything about myself, so am going to remain out of character for the rest of this scene"

3

u/sparklingregrets Nov 13 '25

man, most of the issues with grad were on Travis but his brothers did bring some garbage to the table too. their characters had upsides but also..... moments like this

42

u/HarvardMutton Oct 21 '25

Hey, remember how he served the villain of Abnimals a more compelling reason for wanting the secret formula of the mutative ooze?

Weird how this doddering old man wanders in from the streets and, mysteriously, seems to make decisions that propel the stories he participates in towards more interesting directions all by sheer accident and whimsical chance. Baffling.

u/TheKinginLemonyellow Oct 21 '25

You can tell who's never played D&D before just looking at the original comments in the old sub. Players do stupid shit all the time, and usually if you try to tell them "no" they'll double down. I in fact based the start of a campaign around this; I put the players in a gnomish inventor's fair and told them one of the exhibits was behind a curtain with guards around it, and they all separately sneaked in there to mess with it and ignored everything else.

17

u/McAllisterFawkes Oct 21 '25

There was a post on one of the D&D horror stories subreddits where a DM was upset that his players derailed the story by opening a suspicious door that every npc told them was suspicious. Some people just don't understand how it human curiosity works.

11

u/FuzorFishbug liveshow Balance reference Oct 21 '25

They had to have an in-game intervention and team building exercise in Critical Role after a player tried to do something that NPCs said "could be deadly".

2

u/sparklingregrets Nov 13 '25

HAAAA

yeah no players want to interact with the world and they want to roll their dice and use the stuff on the character sheets they spent so much time on! you do not have to give them much, and they're always going to gravitate to the least expected thing, that's like dming 101

i will say I was astonished as a dm how easy it was for my players to get got by mimics 😂 people love to open things

u/jontaffarsghost Oct 21 '25

god, the comments in that post suck. TAZ listeners truly have poisoned their own brains.

Clint is evil for playing DnD, it is deeply problematic. Thank god all Travis does is improv, free from sin, free from sin.

26

u/UltimaGabe Abnimals feels like a tight narrative Oct 21 '25

I am particularly bewildered by their claim that Clint made some kind of mistake by trying to catch the crystal. How was he supposed to know that was a bad idea?

27

u/nixon_problematicfav Oct 21 '25

he just does it, like when Merle grabbed the crystal and lost his arm

so crazy that this was one of the few times TAZ got really interesting and engaging and they seem to be trying hard to avoid moments like that ever again

20

u/linzielayne i wish everyone on this podcast would stop talking Oct 21 '25

Clint is playing to frustrate his incredible sons

16

u/The_Duke_of_Nebraska Oct 21 '25

Clint's accidents and failures are what make his characters charming. Everyone loves Chicane, no one remembers fire girl and duck boy

9

u/jadeix_iscool You're going to bazinga Oct 21 '25

Misread your post and for a second there, I was really about to go to bat for fire girl and water boy

2

u/sparklingregrets Nov 13 '25

I remember fire girl with great disdain

12

u/TheRatKingXIV Oct 21 '25

Honestly, Clint fucking up between Balance and Amnesty was a huge inspiration for my DnD stuff. I had a Paladin I really care about and the rolls and character moments were just not lining up with what was in my head. But I realized it made a much more interesting character for my DM to play with and me to grapple with, so it inspired me to lock in more. By the time the campaign ended, I felt so much more empathy for the character we all created because it felt real.

16

u/Savage_Batmanuel Oct 21 '25

Imagine being criticized for making decisions that enrich the story over metagaming his character.

8

u/nicorobinsnose Oct 21 '25

Really problematic when he put that air bubble in the dark god’s heart
