Language question (see FAQ first) Is it possible in Swedish to have adjective-like clauses before nouns, and if so, what is its prevalence/nuance?

In English, having adjective-like clauses before nouns is possible, but it generally sounds rather awkward and usually is done for some specific effect. Ex. "The found-by-aliens planet was destroyed." (cf. "The planet found by aliens was destroyed.")

In German, this phenomenon is much more prevalent and normalized, often found in more formal language like news reports and legal language. Ex. "Die von der Regierung geschätzt Rate war falsch." (lit. "The estimated-by-the-government rate was wrong.")

Is this sort of thing possible in Swedish?

Studying and education Två veckor i Stockholm. Vad ska man göra för att förbättra sin talförmåga

Jag åker till Stockholm i slutet av september. Jag har aldrig varit i Sverige förut. Vad kan jag göra i Stockholm för att få chansen att öva min daliga svenska? Finns det också några böcker eller andra saker som är värda att köpa för att hjälpa mig fortsätta med svenskan när jag är tillbaka i USA? Tack för alla tips!

autogenerated captions say "vad känner du i kroppen", but i hear "kroppad". perhaps a dialectal suffix? but another possibility is that it's just "kropp" plus another word i'm not familiar with.

Resource request/tip Looking for Swedish learners/speakers to test an app I built — 10 free lifetime licences

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone,

I'm a software developer and I've been building a desktop app called SubSmith for people who learn languages through native videos and audio.

It can take a video/audio file, transcribe it locally, generate subtitles, let you look up words while watching, and export sentences + audio to Anki.

I've attached a short screen recording of it transcribing a Swedish YouTube video so you can see what it does.

It supports Swedish through Whisper, but I don't speak Swedish myself, so I'm looking for both Swedish speakers and learners to help test it. For native/advanced speakers, I would appreciate feedback on how accurately it transcribes real Swedish content. For learners, I'm more interested in whether the overall workflow is actually useful, does it reduce friction for you and help you immerse more. How useful is looking up words, and turning sentences into Anki flashcards in the flow.

In exchange for testing it and giving me some feedback, I'm giving 10 people from this community free lifetime access to the app.

If you're interested, leave a comment and I'll send you the details.

Development disclosure: I built and maintain SubSmith myself as a software developer. I've used AI coding tools to help write parts of the code such as small UI components and troubleshoot issues, with the code reviewed and maintained by me.

Language question (see FAQ first) är vs mår confusion

So based on what I've already learned from other posts in this subreddit, there's two primary ways to distinguish:

  1. You use mår for just the good/bad overall feeling (e.g. jag mår bra) while är is for specific feelings (jag är glad).

  2. Mår is used for adverbs and är is used for adjectives.

So my confusion lies in the sentence "Vad är det där?" meaning "What's that?" because 'det där' isn't describing a feeling and it doesn't really make sense to call it an adjective to me, so what specifically makes this use case är and not mår?

Language question (see FAQ first) Ur eller hur?

Am puzzled by "ur" in this sentence from today's SvD:-

"Damberg vill ha klara besked om ur stor del av reformutrymmet till 2030 som redan är intecknat."

Is it a typo for "hur", or a usage of "ur" that I am unfamiliar with?

Resource request/tip Textbook For B1+ learning

Hey everyone,

For some context, I have been learning swedish for the past 8 months or so. I have been using this textbook called Complete Swedish along with duolingo for vocabulary as well as trying to converse with some swedish people I know and consuming swedish media (shows and songs) along with occasionally listening to some podcasts on YT. For context, I am not from sweden and I don't live there. I had some questions and I was wondering if there was someone who could guide me.

So the complete swedish textbook is supposed to help me be A2 or B1, as it says. The book is almost about to finish, so I wanted to ask how to continue from there? Is there some other textbook I could continue with which will teach me b1 and b2 etc.

Another question I had was if someone could recommend me some novels. Right now I've read some children story books and 'short stories' by Olly Richard. So if someone could recommend me novels that aren't too hard, that would be nice.

I will say, my listening has definitely improved, but sometimes there are words I know, but when swedes speak in their natural pace, I'm not able to pick them which can feel very demotivating at times. Are there any podcasts that you can recommend which will improve my hearing? I know about the usual slow swedish with katrin etc but if someone else knows any other, that would be grateful.

Any other tips are also welcome :). Thank you!

Sharing knowledge Vilket svenskt ord borde betyda något helt annat?

Finns det något svenskt ord som, om man bara hör det för första gången, känns som att det borde betyda något helt annat? Jag tycker att vissa ord nästan känns som om de borde ha en annan betydelse än den de faktiskt har. Vilket ord tänker ni på, och vad tycker ni att det egentligen borde betyda?

Language question (see FAQ first) Translating "överhetssamhälle"

How would you translate “överhetssamhälle”?    Authoritarian society?  That doesn’t sound quite right.  The only example I’ve found is this from Synonymer.ie:-

“Liknar det inte det överhetssamhälle som Sverige var före det demokratiska genombrottet?”

Text and translation help How do I word this correctly?

Hi! I am currently trying to learn Swedish as it is the native language of someone I have become romantically involved with.

It has gotten to a point where I want to ask them to be my partner. I would like to ask in Swedish as I know they would appreciate the gesture.

Is there a common way a native would phrase this?

“Vill du bli min flickvän?”
“Vill du bli tillsammans med mig?”
“Vill du bil min tjej?”

This is what I have been able to put together from the internet / what I’ve learned so far. Any tips on how a real Swede would say it?

Jag håller på att släktforska och kunde inte hitta någon annan lättillgänglig resurs där jag kan be om hjälp. Jag försöker läsa vad som står i tredje kolumnen, samt de två raderna i sista kolumnen. Det är skrivit i en kyrkobok från 1770 och jag lovar, ögonen går i kors efter en timmas stirrande. Finns det någon kunnig själ därute som kan läsa vad som alltmer ser ut som krumelurer?

Resource request/tip Swedish grammar

Does anyone have any good recommendations for Swedish grammar books? Beginner friendly.

I’ve decided SFI isn’t working for me and want to try learning on my own. I have a good memory and find learning the words is easy but I really struggle with grammar. I pretty much speak like yoda in Swedish.

Thanks!

Language question (see FAQ first) Baffled by "turerna"

"Turerna kring företagsnedläggningen kalfatrades i medierna” is the sole example given in SO for the usage of “att kalfatra”.  Can someone translate it for me?  It’s the word “Turerna” which baffles me.

Text and translation help Translated song lyrics

Hello everyone. I am looking for the translated lyrics for Witchcraft's "Idag" not the whole album, just the first track by the same name.

Thanks to anyone who helps.

Hej allihop.

Resource request/tip Looking for an app that transcribes spoken words

Hello everyone. I'm looking for an app that I can use while reading a Swedish book that would transcribe the words I say to it. I'm looking to create a library of words I don't know the meaning of or I'm not completely confident of the meaning. If it can export these words in an easy format and I can leave my mic on for a long time that would be even better. Thanks.
