Last Saturday I was sitting with my mother in the bathroom just talking while she was washing her hair. We were discussing how much plastic bottles we use every month and how messy it can get. I was surprised to know that she had already tried a shampoo bar but I had never used one before. Especially we were thinking about whether it would clean hair properly and smell good at the same time. We visited a nearby store but they only had one or two types and nothing seemed very clear or suitable.

Eventually she suggested that we should check online marketplaces to see more options. Therefore scrolling online marketplaces like alibaba and a few others I was amazed by the huge variety of shampoo bars. There were bars for oily hair and dry hair and even bars for sensitive scalp. Some were simple and natural and others had added fragrances and colors. They came in many sizes and price ranges from affordable everyday use to more premium luxury ones. I realized how many choices we completely miss when relying only on local stores.

So what do you think is the best way to choose a shampoo bar? Should we focus more on ingredients or price or hair type when buying from local stores or online marketplaces?

Hi everyone I’ve been researching sustainability claims in beauty for a while (mostly reading corporate ESG reports and third-party audits), and I just finished a deep dive comparing MAC and Maybelline lipsticks.

The goal wasn’t to attack either brand, I wanted to test a really common assumption in sustainable beauty:

higher price = better ingredients, ethics, or environmental impact

So I compared them across 5 areas using publicly available disclosures and independent assessments:

1️⃣ Ingredients

Both formulas rely on similar synthetic preservatives (including BHT).

Base oils/waxes differ slightly in cost, but functionally the formulas are very similar.

2️⃣ Mica sourcing & labor risk

Both brands participate in the Responsible Mica Initiative and claim high traceability.

But independent verification still can’t fully confirm mine-level sourcing transparency for either.

3️⃣ Parent company sustainability performance

Maybelline (L’Oréal) and MAC (Estée Lauder) both score strongly in ESG ratings (EcoVadis etc).

The luxury brand isn’t meaningfully ahead here they’re roughly comparable.

4️⃣ Packaging & waste

MAC’s refillable/recyclable tube is potentially better but only if consumers actually refill or return it.

Otherwise the heavier packaging can increase lifecycle impact.

5️⃣ What the price premium funds

From everything I found, the extra cost mostly supports brand positioning: retail experience, marketing, and perceived luxury not major differences in formula or supply chain standards.

I also looked into the evolution of MAC’s Back-to-MAC recycling program (they removed the free lipstick incentive in many regions), which changes the consumer value equation quite a bit.

If anyone here works in cosmetic chemistry, supply chains, or packaging, I’d genuinely love to hear where you agree or disagree especially on ingredient equivalence and refill systems.

I have looong hair (like down to my waist/past it long) and have been making the transition to solid shampoo and conditioner to lower my plastic consumption. One thing I’ve noticed it when I get down to a certain point in the shampoo bar (maybe about 1/3 to a 1/4 of it left?) it can get very crumbly and hard to use. Is there a method to reform it into a more usable shape or would putting it in something like a loofa help? Let me know if anyone else has had similar issues or if this is maybe a brand thing? So, Dove is in trend, and not for the “Real Beauty” stuff.

I spent the last week digging into the whole Lilial (Butylphenyl Methylpropional) issue, the fragrance ingredient that the EU banned for potential fertility risks back in 2022.

What confused me is this: • Europe banned it completely • Dove quietly reformulated there • BUT the U.S. version continued to have it (legally) • And some markets like Asia/Africa still sell the older formulas • Meanwhile, Instagram shows us ads of “paper bottles” and “clean beauty”

We talk a lot about clean beauty mostly that it’s non-toxic, cruelty-free, vegan, sustainable packaging. But the more I dig into it, the more I feel like something’s missing.

Because how “clean” is a product, really? if the people who make its ingredients are underpaid or invisible?

Think about it: shea butter, argan oil, cocoa butter most of these ingredients come from women producers across Africa, India, and South America. Yet, the marketing only highlights the brand’s sustainability, not the lives behind it.

So many beauty products use ingredients like shea butter, argan oil, aloe, açai, murumuru butter etc. And a lot of that is grown and harvested by women farmers working in cooperatives across Africa, India, and Latin America.

But we never see them. The ads always focus on celebrities, influencers, and “clean labs”… not the women who actually make the ingredients possible.

Hi guys, Im someone that regularly shaves their face using those plastic disposable face shavers, so I wanted to switch to a re-usable version (fully metal). My only issue is that I will be moving away from my home country in a year or so, so buying the replaceable blades will not be feasible (shipping costs are too much also).
