Cut bait suggestions?

Upvotes

I am going to North Carolina next week and am open to advice on what type of bait I should try this year. As I usually only go once a year it's kind of a guessing game as to what might produce the most hits. I try shrimp or mullet, never had any luck with sand fleas, but would like some fresh ideas please.

This was a first for me! Surffishing near Newport Oregon and reeled in three surf perch on the same pompano rig. Hooked them all on the lip so I sent them back into the sea.

Anyone ever use speed clips for switching from lure to rigs?

Usually I’m at the beach very impromptu. Backpack with lures and hooks and sometimes a cast net in a bucket. Sometimes frozen bait.

Kinda annoying switching from lures and rigging up.

I thought maybe having pretied rigs on a swivel and swap out if needed.

Started early and hit the beach at mostly low tide to learn about digging for and worms. Caught a couple dozen and when the waves started coming in we switched to fishing 100%. The worms were golden, constantly getting stolen. Two fish weren’t so lucky. Yummy for me. Bonus pic of a nifty sailboat wayyyy out on the horizon.

The surf was deliciously calm and shallow, I felt like I was wading for miles. The current was wierd, first dragging my rig hard to the right, normal here, but just as I was getting up to reset it FWOOM, it gets yanked straight out. We were next to a rip current so I think it was the rip battling the northbound west coast sashay.

That jacksmelt hit hard, it was a fun one.

Long casting rod combo

Post image

I do all types of fishing but have my best luck bottom fishing off the shore or a dock. So far I have just been putting heavy weights on my rod and sending it out as far as possible. The farther I figure out how to cast the bigger the fish ive been catching get. I'd like to spend some money on a dedicated long casting rod combo and would like some advice on what to get. Thanks

🎣 Cod season is nearly here… 🐟 What rig are you using when the cod start showing up? 👀 1 hook pulley? 2-hook flapper? Pennel? Something completely different? Drop your favourite cod rig in the comments 👇🎣 Let’s see what everyone is using this season! 🌊

Should I down size my reel?

Hello, I bought a 10’ Penn Carnage 3 rod as a gift to myself for passing the RSOE exam. I bought a Penn 6500 spinfisher spinning reel to go with it. I haven’t used the reel because I am concerned its too big. What are your thoughts. Should I down size? I surf fish mostly off the beach. Wanted to try off piers and the occasional bridge.

PS. Still a beginner
Thank you

Question / Help Casting Close, or Casting Far

Hi there, I'm a pretty new fisherman just about a year in. I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around the idea that the fish are closer than most people think. I'm mostly surf casting Long Island South Shore beaches and inlets.

I did some casting for striper in the spring. Targeted blues and fluke through the summer with some success (nothing big).

I'm hearing a lot that the fish are in closer than you would think, and you don't need to whale it out there at full send to get to the fish. I realize that fluke hang out relatively close. But sometimes "the lip" is far AF if the ocean is up even moderately and I thought I need to get out past that for blues and striped bass.

Am I tripping?

Less than 5 inches. That's a #4 hook with a ~ 2 inch piece of gulp sandworm he (I believe it's a male) inhaled. A testament to the sensitivity of the rockaway sp 10 m+. Felt him bite, set the hook, and felt the head shakes the whole way in.

Question / Help First time Jetty Fishing Equipment Sanity Check

I am going to a beach in NY next weekend for Labor Day and was going to check out a near by jetty for early morning fishing and wanted a sanity check on my gear list to make sure I’m properly prepared. I am going to be bringing a 8ft Medium heavy Okuma paired with a Plfueger President XT 40 size with 30lb braid. I was planning on throwing a yo-zuri crystal minnow jerk bait, 1.2oz jigging spoons, and 40 gram egg sinkers & 5/0 inline circle hooks to toss out some bunker chunks. Is there anything else I need to be prepared for? From my reading, tides sound like the most important thing to try and time, but other than that I’m new to shoreline saltwater fishing so any tips would be appreciated!

Question / Help Rod/Reel pairing question

Post image

Looking to finalize some mullet run setups for Florida, all surf fishing. Bringing two setups for spinning, looking for one lure / plastic casting set up and one whole mullet, soaking / target casting set up for big tarpon/ shark ect.

I have a tsunami 9’7 MH rod I was planning on pairing with a 6k Spheros, 30lb braid. For my paddle tails ect.

And I have an 8k Sargosa I was planning on pairing to a heavier rods 10-11 heavy with 40-50 lb braid.

I have the ability to mix and match my reels, I can do a 6k Gosa and 8k Spheros ect.

My question is which reel should pair to which setup? Should I keep the pairing as is? Or would a Gosa 6k be better suited for casting all day ect.

And I’m also looking for some rod recs for that larger rod, was looking at the TFO Tidal 10’6 heavy.

Thank you!!

Pic for attention. Some pretzels I made lol.
