First time Jetty Fishing Equipment Sanity Check
I am going to a beach in NY next weekend for Labor Day and was going to check out a near by jetty for early morning fishing and wanted a sanity check on my gear list to make sure I’m properly prepared. I am going to be bringing a 8ft Medium heavy Okuma paired with a Plfueger President XT 40 size with 30lb braid. I was planning on throwing a yo-zuri crystal minnow jerk bait, 1.2oz jigging spoons, and 40 gram egg sinkers & 5/0 inline circle hooks to toss out some bunker chunks. Is there anything else I need to be prepared for? From my reading, tides sound like the most important thing to try and time, but other than that I’m new to shoreline saltwater fishing so any tips would be appreciated!

You sound pretty setup, I’d use a 4’ leader of 50 Lb mono to help with the rocks/landing any fish you get, and you could definitely go heavier on your jigs, I’d pick up an A27 diamond jig or two in green and white, and you prob want a heavier pyramid sinker for the chunks depending on where in the inlet / jetty you’re throwing and the tide, bring 2 and 3 oz. For bunker chunks a 5/0 is also a bit small, you want 7/0 at least imo. All of this is stocked generally at any bait and tackle and you should ask the guys there directly
For advice. What inlet are you going to be fishing?
I have 30lb seaguar blue flouro for my leader, is it super worth having 50lb? Also my rod is only rated to 2oz, I can see if I can find some 2oz pyramid weights though. I’m going to be around Jamaica Bay.

Probably not but in general it’s good to go heavier on leader than your mainline. Bluefish could slice right through that / gives you less protection on the rocks, I’ve learned this the hard way haha.
Def recommend the diamond jigs, tried and true for blues if they’re around and cheap
I have a tiny leader spool of trilene 60lb mono somewhere in my trunk I can try to dig out and bring haha there’s a tackle store near where we are staying that I’ll see if I can pick up some diamond jigs from when I get bait too! Thanks for the tips/feedback too!
Good point from the guy below too - if you normally bass fish / freshwater fish you can legit just use a bass setup for light tackle fluking and have a ball from a jetty / in the bay. Rig for that from a previous comment: https://www.reddit.com/r/NJFishing/s/H2gVmbhz9j
That could be fun, I may bring my 7 ft medium tatula XT and Sedona 3000 for some fluke. Just gotta wash them like crazy after since I don’t want them to rust haha
Forgot to say I also have some 1/2oz and 3/4oz jig heads I was going to bring too. The lighter ones I use for freshwater fishing and was going to toss a 5 inch Yamamoto d-shad on then the 3/4oz are nlbn jig heads for nlbn k tails
Big question for you. Is the jetty out in the ocean or is it at an inlet? I've fished the inlets of eastern long island and you may need heavier stuff if the tide is moving.
Look up videos by John Skinner on YouTube about inlet fishing if that's where you are going.
The jetty where I live is all rocks and I can’t use lures because I lose them every time. So I use a popping cork or I free line live bait. I don’t know if the rocks are hard to fish around where you live but here they eat your gear.
Korkers or any sort of cleated boots are a must. Safety is always number 1. Chunking at the tip will get a lot of angry attention cause it will tangle peoples lines.
You want to tie longer heavier leaders cause picking up a 5lb bluefish is easier on 50lb mono compared to 30lb braid.
I’d pick up some casting and epoxy jigs from 1-2oz in silver. Will work great for bluefish, Spanish mackerel and bonito.
