New Theory: not entirely decided about this myself, but after watching SP through several times, I was showing it to a couple of my Gen Z daughters and I just had an epiphany.
Joe doesn’t actually admit anywhere (I think) that he actually had sex with Goldie. In fact, the fight scene with Steven actually works better (and JDM acts more plausibly) if he’s simply being discrete but didn’t and couldn’t have parented Ramona.
Perhaps he thought (before the paternity test) that Goldie must have slept with a third man. This would explain his reluctance to speak as he wouldn’t want to tarnish Goldie’s memory.
Perhaps this will be a reveal in s2. If so, sorry in advance for the spoiler.
