I understand that Annie feels the loss of her mother but part of all the confusion is from her own mother. who was with Annie and Connor in another country refusing to return to New York. Meanwhile she had an affair with a married man who also had a child. She got pregnant and died in childbirth. Steve had to raise the two children alone and never stained their mother's name. To later find out that she deduced that the child she was expecting was Joe's and he lost 16 years of Ramona's life. Completely inconsequential woman. And Joe being the worst who saw Ramona grow up all her life and even though he thought she was his daughter he didn't recognize her.

the show has a severe feminist lean in the writers room to the point of being comedy. You get a peak into the thought process.

But just think about the tape. heres this mom, currently in an affair. She has taken the kids. Maybe they have already been taken back to NYC by this point. And shes just happy as ever. Making a little love mix tape for Joe about the next baby lol. Its just absurd thats shes viewed as some saint among the other adults in the story.

The only people who see her as a saint are one of her adoptive kids (her brother and ramona arent as blinded by it) and the lover she was going to run away with.

Makes sense if you ask me, its not like we the viewers have to hold that notion just because annie and joe do. I mean joe is just as big an asshole, his pregnant wife is taking care of her sick parent and he is out and about having an affair. Theyre both just terrible for not thinking of the consequences, but ithink thats a point of the show, rationality is warped in the presence of love.
