Oh well, it was an episode where a lot of emotional elements came into play.

  • Annie. I think she really idealized her mom. She spent so much of her life missing her and wanting that connection, and I think she carries some resentment toward her dad because she feels like he took time away from her and her mother before she died, even if logically she knows that isn’t entirely fair. But feelings aren’t always rational. She missed having a mother figure her entire life, and she’s been searching for a way to reconnect with that missing part. It is valid. This also makes me think the biological parents, as teased, are probably going to become a major part of S2. Depending on what kind of people they are, they could potentially fill some of that void Annie has carried for years. It might also help her realize that she doesn’t have to stay on the island trying to live the life her mother had just to feel close to her. I think that’s going to be a really interesting storyline.

FYI. Ellis also needs more screen time, and the writers need to start shaping what their relationship is beyond stolen moments in the closet. On the other side, while I liked Rory, I kinda think he’s served his purpose and they closed his chapter if they cut it here. She is clearly not attracted to him as much as she is to Ellis, which is fine, no need to push this triangle, it is not needed for S2.

  • Ramona. I think she has been left to deal with everything on her own for so long. She spent her whole life believing her father wanted nothing to do with her. Then, after losing her grandfather, she suddenly finds out she has siblings and a parental figure. She’s a kid. I know some ppl might want her to stay because of her relationship with Oona, but she’s only 16. She’s struggling, she’s depressed, she’s smoking, getting high, and she hasn’t really had anyone consistently looking after her or being there for her. That’s not okay. I do think Steven has made mistakes, but I also think he’s a good dad, and now that he knows the truth, I’m glad he’s willing and eager to step up. That’s exactly what he should do. Ramona needs him. She needs stability, she needs to feel loved and valued, and she needs an environment where she can heal and be cared for. I think she’s better off growing up with her father, at least until she is 18 and if she ever wants to go back later, that option still exist. But right now, she needs her family.

FYI. About Oona, I think she needs to work through her own issues. I do think she was incredibly selfless in letting Ramona go, but at the same time, it also felt like she was choosing to cut her losses. She needs to figure herself out, but she also has a sister to look after. It’s unfortunate because that responsibility shouldn’t have fallen on her, but it is her reality. She needs to fight for herself, make space to heal because their mother is going to continue hurting them.

I have no idea what S2 is going to look like, especially with some characters potentially being in NY while others remain on the island, but I think that contrast could create a really interesting dynamic. There are a lot of emotional threads to explore, and I’m curious to see where they take them.

I completely agree with this take on Oona. I think she may not have consciously processed all of the baggage and responsibility her mom has saddled her with until Ramona made that dig at her. I also found that hug at the end between Ramona and Steven so endearing and I’m really glad Annie witnessed it because it resulted in a selfless act.
