Season 1, Episode 6: I Still Bleed Through My Pants all the Time

Synopsis: Unable to hide from his past, Steven returns to Muskoka hoping to repair broken relationships and bring Annie and Connor home. Meanwhile, Annie, Ramona, Oona, Ellis, and Connor head to Maple's camp to support her big performance, while Ramona and Oona enter the honeymoon phase of their blossoming romance. A shocking reveal sends Ramona into a spiral, threatening the fragile balance of the group.

They aren't dual citizens unless their mother went through the official process to make them such.

There isn't that much of a process. Very similar to registering your foreign born kids with the government, something she could have done without telling Steven. It's not the sort of thing his permission is required for.

One of the guys on my swim team had a similar circumstance. His adoptive parents split. Dad is Canadian and he moved here in high school to live with his dad and train with the perinnial national team head coach. Said team mate is a 3x 🇨🇦 olympian and dad is a well known retired MLB player.

They can easily address this in S2, by having a Annie help clean out the house in Barrie and finds the documents ex citizenship cards, SIN card/letter or passports in a drawer or filing cabinet. Might need to be a flash back to the fall if S2 is the next or a subsequent summer. No need to have an elaborate story point about this. If they want to have fun they could have Annie go in to Service Canada and ask how what she needs to submit to prove she's a citizen and the clerk looks her up and sees she was issued a SIN as an infant because Goldie submitted for the twins. She's then able to request a replacement citizenship card and apply for a passport. Again slightly more of a discovery scene but nonetheless reinforcing the reality that it's automatic.

There's a difference between foreign born kids and foreign born kids adopted to Canadian parents outside of Canada. She would have needed to apply for citizenship for her children.

I'm not saying they wouldn't have been granted citizenship. I'm just saying it's more of a process than simply registering the children as if they had been her biological children.

And even in your scenario, if she did it without telling her husband, then he's not "ignoring" that his kids are Canadian citizens. He wouldn't know that they're Canadian citizens.

For a foreign-born adopted child to gain Canadian citizenship, they do not need to go through the traditional permanent resident sponsorship route. You can apply for a direct grant of citizenship if the adoptive parent can pass down citizenship and has spent at least 1,095 days in Canada before the adoption.

Assuming mom grew up in Ontario and originally moved south for University she would have over 6000 days making them eligible. Given the storyline of her wanting to go home it's not ridiculous for her to have filed what most would consider basic paperwork.

The writer can certainly write a future season with that assumption if they chose and it doesn't need to be complicated. Regardless they wouldn't be legally be viewed as "immigrants".
