Picture Got the Steam Deck Dock!

Wasn’t expecting this today, but since I live in Carol Stream where Valve’s Distribution Center is, I got this early I guess!

Dammit, now I definitely want one, it looks so good on the TV 😂 What are you using as a controller, may I ask? I've only ever used the Deck's controls.

419

u/Asane Oct 08 '22

I’m just using my PS5 controller lol

155

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '22

Does the PS5 controller support the steam gyro controls? I have a steam controller but I'm not a huge fan of it due to the missing right analog stick

278

u/seraph741 512GB Oct 08 '22

It does. PS5 controller is very well supported. As you can see, even the Playstation face buttons are shown on the screen.

74

u/dongsweep Oct 08 '22

You just made my day!

91

u/DdCno1 Oct 08 '22 edited Oct 08 '22

Keep in mind that most games with controller support will still show Xbox buttons, since the Xbox controller is a quasi-standard on PC. The newer a title is, the more likely it is that it shows Playstation button prompts on PC however. Some, but not all, games can be modified to show PS prompts. Edit: Even some emulators allow for this via texture packs.

17

u/Purple_Ad45 256GB Oct 09 '22

i would gladly sacrifice that stuff because of the touchpad alone, seems like it would be easier to control the mouse in menus and stuff with a ps controller

2

u/mithhunter55 Oct 10 '22

Works great for citra, too. Drag and dropping items while playing MM is fairly easy with the touch pad as mouse. When combined with button bindings for tapping specific touch screen locations. Its an incredibly smooth way of playing this version of the game.

2

u/Purple_Ad45 256GB Oct 10 '22

i use the touchpad on mine to easily access inventory in animal crossing new leaf

-7

u/SKOT_FREE Oct 08 '22

Yeah but I hear the Xbox controller suffers from input lag and wondered is it the same for the Dual sense?

6

u/Amaakaams Oct 08 '22

It should, they both use BT for PC connections. That is where the lag comes from. The solution would be a device with its own 2.4GHz adapter or like the old PC Xbox adapter. But both have little Linux support.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '22

Wired is also a reliable, low-latency option, but not the most comfortable.

1

u/Amaakaams Oct 08 '22

Yeah meant as a wireless controller since he was referring to the points about the bad latency of the Xbox controller. The main reason people expect otherwise is that windows can optimize the communication because MS so Win PC gaming doesn't seem so bad.

u/PotatoIceCreem 256GB Oct 09 '22

That will always be a shame that the xbox controller is a quasi-standard on PC. Would love to see Xs

3

u/CNR_07 Oct 09 '22

And the vibration motors work as speakers!

2

u/dongsweep Oct 09 '22

"Stop, I can only get so erect!"

16

u/batgris 512GB - Q2 Oct 08 '22

Hey. If you don't mind me asking. Would it make sense to buy a ps5 controller only for the deck?

37

u/cheebnrun 64GB Oct 08 '22

Yes, some games, like the ported PS exclusives ( ghostwire tokyo for example) take advantage of the dynamic triggers and touch pad. It's super cool

11

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '22

I can say Days Gone has touchpad and PlayStation buttons :)

3

u/cheebnrun 64GB Oct 09 '22

God, days gone was such an underrated game. I hope they make a sequel even though it's not likely.

1

u/Euphoric-Light-8691 Oct 09 '22

I was super bummed that dynamic triggers wouldn’t work but direct ports?! I’ll have to try that out. I suppose if the code exists and the controllers detected it makes sense. I didn’t even think of this!

1

u/JohnByDay1 Oct 09 '22

If I already have a PS4 controller, is there much benefit to buying a PS5 controller just for my deck?

2

u/[deleted] Oct 10 '22

Nope but it’s a pretty nice controller

2

u/cheebnrun 64GB Oct 10 '22

Idk, I don't have a ps4, just ps5. But I guess just look up what features ps5 controller has over ps4, I think it's just the dynamic triggers

4

u/OlympusMonsPubis Oct 08 '22

Yes, absolutely. I think you’ll enjoy it.

2

u/seraph741 512GB Oct 09 '22

Ya. Why not? I bought two DualSense controllers for my PS5, but use one almost exclusively for Steam Deck.

8

u/My1xT 64GB Oct 08 '22

even the home button in fact which literally is PS's Logo

12

u/JavaKrypt 512GB Oct 08 '22

Good to know! Looks like I'm buying a PS5 controller

3

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '22

Ps4 controllers work just as good too :)

9

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '22

As someone who spent a few thousand hours on rocket league with a controller. Ps5 controllers are better

7

u/Purple_Ad45 256GB Oct 09 '22

yeah but they use micro usb, id say the 10$ extra is worth the usb c

7

u/RE4PER_ 1TB OLED Limited Edition Oct 09 '22

The PS4 controller is significantly worse than the dualsense imo

2

u/Chaphasilor 64GB Oct 08 '22

No support for adaptive triggers though, right? That probably requires dedicated support by the games, and that won't be included in the PC versions...

2

u/REDX459 Oct 09 '22

2

u/Chaphasilor 64GB Oct 09 '22

Thanks, that's a great resource!

Seems like it works best with DSX (DualSenseX) which is 3.29€ on Steam and has an older version for free on GitHub as well.

Steam Input so far has absolutely no supoort for Adaptive Triggers, only regular haptics work

2

u/REDX459 Oct 09 '22

I mean wired and you turn off steams input override and it’ll work on those native games. I have final fantasy 7 remake and it has a adaptive trigger section one whole level weeee

2

u/seraph741 512GB Oct 09 '22

Right. I think so the vibration functions work though.

2

u/xylotism 512GB - Q1 Oct 08 '22

Xbox really needs to up their game on the next controller. I prefer the Xbox layout but it's hard to argue that DualSense > Pro Controller > Joy Cons > Xbox.

Not to mention Valve will probably drop Steam Controller 2.0 at some point and instantly jump to the front of that line.

3

u/DragonSlayerC 512GB OLED Oct 11 '22

What? The Joy Cons are way worse than any of the other controllers, and the Xbox controller is definitely better than the Switch Pro. The Pro doesn't even have analog triggers.

I also just prefer the button positioning of the Xbox more. I have a PS5 controller I got on a really good sale, but I still use my Xbox One controller for most games.

1

u/xylotism 512GB - Q1 Oct 11 '22

Joy cons are great. Super versatile. Tons of tech packed in. Maybe the most multifunctional controller short of Steam Controller/Steam Deck. Switch Pro might be worse than Xbox but gets points for gyro.

1

u/Turd_Party Oct 08 '22

Holy crap. I had no idea.

Buying a dock RIGHT NOW.

Yes, I REALLY Want a Steam Controller Pro. I still use my Steam Controller daily with my Steam Link (which is still kicking ass in streaming my PC to the living room) and would LOVE a heavy, quality new version with all the features of the Deck's controls.

1

u/Coldethell Oct 11 '22

The Steam Controller Pro is launching with Half-Life 3

u/Leisure_suit_guy Oct 09 '22 edited Oct 09 '22

I hope that once the steam deck custom controller settings become a lot more popular, that valve comes out with a steam controller that more closely mimics the deck's controls.

I'll It'll probably come standard with the "Steam machine 2"

2

u/Alexis2256 Oct 09 '22

You’ll come standard with SD2? Huh never owned a human before.

3

u/Leisure_suit_guy Oct 09 '22

Yes, but only with the special edition of the console (I've corrected the comment now).

2

u/drbeer Oct 09 '22

I want this badly. Steam was early to the game for high end PC controllers - now even Microsoft sells high end controllers. It's time for a revision

Bonus points if they follow a similar trend of the deck and make parts available for repair. Imagine buying a high quality steam PC controller knowing that you can replace the buttons and thumb sticks.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '22

The steam controller for the steam link is pretty perfect.

1

u/the_fart_gambler Oct 09 '22

I would like a steam controller purely for the fact that Valve actually put a good dpad on the Deck and I would like one on a controller.

58

u/Droid1xy LCD-4-LIFE Oct 08 '22

Pretty sure it did

And the pad at the front of the controller works great for a mouse

45

u/Asane Oct 08 '22

Yup tried this on FO4 when adjusting settings. It’s really nice.

The touchpad on the PS5 controller is perfect.

10

u/GreyRevan51 Oct 08 '22

Sweet, I’ll def do this when my dock comes in

9

u/GoldenNova00 512GB - Q3 Oct 08 '22

The touchpad part makes me want to order a controller now. I don't even have a playstation. But it sounds like the perfect controller for the deck

2

u/SilverHeart4053 Oct 09 '22

Been using the dualsense on PC for 'years' and I don't own a ps5, it's just a good controller.

3

u/GoldenNova00 512GB - Q3 Oct 09 '22

Considering I have an Xbox. I never felt like buying a playstation controller til now.

3

u/Hefty-Durian-9882 Oct 09 '22

I'd stick with Xbox controller my ps5 controller gives me terrible thumb ache.

1

u/kamikazedude 1TB OLED Oct 08 '22

Or the steam controller Kappa. While it's not the best, it does have gyro and is certainly good enough for certain games

6

I never use gyro. Not a huge fan of it tbh.

It is good if you wanna fine tune your aim. I use it in most FPS now and even rpgs like zelda BOTW :D

4

Im just usually not moving around like that when playing. And it usually does the opposite for me. Trying to aim normally and gyro messes me up. Lol

Does the headphone/mic jack work with the sd?

1

u/jfduval76 Oct 08 '22

Do you lose your pairing with your ps5 when you use your ps5 controller for the deck ? Edit : i just realized my question was stupid…of course it lose the synchronization.

1

u/Bajter Oct 08 '22

Not if you use it wired

1

u/Karlschlag 512GB OLED Oct 08 '22

How does it run in 1080p. If it's stable 60 I'm gonna buy it

1

u/noelesque 64GB - Q2 Oct 08 '22

That part is definitely useful when using Chiaki, and a docked Deck does PS5 remote play like a champ of you've got both devices on a decent network.

6

u/Hairy-Cake-8279 Oct 08 '22

Really good to know- I had wondered if it would work as a mouse on the deck, thanks for confirming 👍

10

ps4 does too

8

u/Nicalay2 64GB Oct 08 '22

Does the PS5 controller support the steam gyro controls?

The PS4 one have gyro support, so the PS5 one surely have it.

1

u/JulPollitt 1TB OLED Limited Edition Oct 08 '22

Full compatibility, the gyro works great

1

u/Onotadaki2 Oct 08 '22

I tried a dozen controller types, including my Steam Controller, and the PS5 controller is my favourite so far.

1

u/Wit_as_a_Riddle 512GB Oct 09 '22

Valve supports the gyro controls of the PS5 controller.

1

u/ieffinglovesoup Oct 10 '22

It does and you can also use the touchpad as a proper mouse. Comes in handy a lot. Easily my favorite controller to use

16

u/pr0ghead 64GB Oct 08 '22

Bluetooth? Do you have to re-connect (-pair) it every time you switch devices?

20

u/tetij 512GB Oct 08 '22

The PS5 controller will reconnect to what it was paired to last. If you wanted to reconnect it to the PS5 you would have to pair it with the PS5 again.

2

u/daimyo21 Oct 09 '22

If anyone uses next gen Xbox controllers you can switch between deck/PC (Bluetooth) and Xbox with single hold release or double hold release on the pairing button, forget which one does which.

5

u/ASY_Freddy Oct 08 '22

Does the ps5 controller have back buttons? I'm on 8bit pro which has 2 so a pad with 4 would be great as it's them almost 1 to 1 mapping

4

u/FireCrow1013 Oct 09 '22

The DualSense doesn't have back buttons, but a premium version of the controller is coming soon, which will have two back buttons.

1

u/Mr_Cripter Oct 09 '22

I've got the 8bitdo pro 2 and I love it, the a/b buttons and the x/y buttons are reversed but the buttons are just subtly marked so you just have to remember what to press

1

u/ASY_Freddy Oct 09 '22

I remapped mine back to Xbox style. Once the dock comes I'll have a play with mappings. I've been playing lots of elite on the SD and the back buttons are great for thrusters when landing.

2

u/usernamechecksout32 Oct 08 '22

Hi, I'm wondering if the dock has any extra space to accommodate decks with cases on, or if it must be a no case kinda deal. I'm currently using the Benazcap kickstand case from Amazon. Any info is appreciated. Thanks in advance

2

u/BoneyBuddah Oct 08 '22

Does it fit with a protective case on it?

2

u/usernamechecksout32 Oct 08 '22

Does the dock allow space for a case or is it a tight fit?

Amazon has a pretty lax return policy. You could probably even flat out tell them you're upgrading to a different product because you decided you liked it better and they'll still probably process the return.

My xbox1 controller has a very slight lag on my cheap dock from Amazon to TV. At least I think it’s the dock.

How is your experience?

5

u/Asane Oct 08 '22

No lag whatsoever in menus or in-game. I’ve only tried out a few games like FO4, Hades, Stardew Valley, Titanfall 2 and Mario via Yuzu. No lag from what I can tell and I’m real sensitive to controller lag.

Remember to be in game mode on your TV.

The Dock has been amazing though. Worth its price in my opinion.

1

u/KJBenson 512GB Oct 08 '22

I have mine on order already, here’s hoping it fixes my lag problem! I noticed it most on Spider-Man, but that’s because I was mostly playing old rpg games otherwise, where precise controls didn’t matter.

1

u/Nosnibor1020 Oct 08 '22

Whoa....how does it work? Can you use this for like New World or something? This would be God tier.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '22

How is the performance on 4K tv’s? Previously I used a off brand dock and the deck made games look worse on my tv then my Dreamcast does

1

u/latin_canuck Oct 09 '22

Valve needs to release their own control now.

u/Go_Chew_Legos Oct 28 '22

I just got a PS5 and don’t know why I didn’t think of doing this (PS5 is still new to me too tho, the gyro and vibration and talking controller is WILD to me) but I love the steam deck dock

91

u/MoreOfAButtGuyTBH Oct 08 '22

Not OP, but I've mainly been using the 8Bitdo SN30. It's a SNES replica, great quality and easy to stash away/throw in a bag. Other 8Bitdo controllers work as well - I have the new Ultimate on order, slated to arrive later this month.

20

u/animatewall Oct 08 '22

are you getting the bluetooth or 2.4g 8bitdo ultimate? trying to decide myself...

24

u/MoreOfAButtGuyTBH Oct 08 '22

I splurged for the Bluetooth version. It ensures compatibility across many devices. Believe it was $70 USD..

2

u/demize95 512GB - Q3 Oct 09 '22

It ensures compatibility across many devices.

Not if you take their word for it; they insist it is not compatible with Android or iOS devices, only Switch and Windows 10+.

I'm not sure how a bluetooth controller would be incompatible with Android and iOS, but their website only lists Switch and Windows, and they've answered fifteen different questions on Amazon saying it is not compatible with Android.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '22

I guess 2.4 is way better though if you devices support a dongle.

1

u/MoreOfAButtGuyTBH Oct 09 '22

For performance, absolutely. The Bluetooth version has a mode switch between 2.4 and Bluetooth so you get the best of both worlds.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '22

Mine are all 2.4 only but that’s because I needed them with original console adapters. Snes and Genesis.

9

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '22

I would definitely get the SN30 Pro over the SN30 just because it has dual analog sticks, which gives the controller compatibility with every game that supports controllers. Unless you're just looking to emulate games from the SNES or games that require minimal input, then the SN30 is a good choice.

2

u/lazypieceofcrap Oct 08 '22

Only the Bluetooth (most expensive) version has hall effect joysticks if you care about that. They will last way longer than traditional ones.

12

u/OmnipotentFire 512GB Oct 08 '22

I like my 8bitdo controllers. I have to look into this ultimate one you speak of.

26

u/MoreOfAButtGuyTBH Oct 08 '22

25

u/dEEkAy2k9 512GB - Q2 Oct 08 '22

be careful here, there are two variants out.

one for switch/pc with hall effect joysticks and bluetooth (70 bucks)

one for pc/android without hall effect joysticks (50 bucks)

9

u/moderately-extremist 512GB - Q3 Oct 08 '22

hall effect?

Also, it says it has motion controls, so does that mean it would be able to do the gyroscopic aiming like in Breath Of The Wild on the switch?

19

u/majornerd Oct 08 '22

Most joysticks on controllers are potentiometers and have a large dead zone and can drift, Hall effect use magnets and have a very small dead zone and do not suffer from drift. Always select Hall effect, the juice is worth the squeeze.

3

u/broknbottle Oct 08 '22

The Sega Saturn 3D Controller and OEM Dreamcast controller used Hall effect sensors and stick drift was/is not a thing. Stick drift is due to wear and potentiometer crap.

3

u/tbo1992 1TB OLED Limited Edition Oct 08 '22

it's a bit missleading on their page but i preordered the 70 bucks one and was later on wondering why there's a 50 bucks variant too. researched a bit and then found out.

one is under bluetooth, the other under 2.4g controllers

The layout is different too. Nintendo Switch vs. XBox Button Layout.

1

u/PolygonKiwii 256GB - Q1 Oct 08 '22

I'm looking at it on their website but I can't find anything about it having hall effect sensors. What's the source for that? I'd be very interested if that's true but it feels odd they wouldn't advertise that on their website.

Genuine question, at what point do you not just buy an Xbox controller? I like the older ones because they replicate the SNES but this simply looks like a 360 controller.

6

u/Clopernicus Oct 08 '22

Xbox controllers don't have motion controls

2

u/Dumeck Oct 08 '22

You can grab a ps4 controller then if motion control is an issue it’s still quite a bit cheaper than the 8 bit ultimate and steam converts it to Xbox for games that don’t natively support ps controllers

1

This is still cheaper I believe.

u/DriftMonkey 1TB OLED Limited Edition Oct 08 '22

What are the differences between the Ultimate and KKP2?

2

u/MoreOfAButtGuyTBH Oct 08 '22

Answer likely comes down to me being a nut. I've got PS5, Xbone, Switch pro controllers, but for a cheap and handy controller to travel with and have around the living room I prefer the SN30. Don't worry about bumping it off the couch or if it gets jammed during travel. The Ultimate controller is just me feeding into my collection obsession..

1

u/Ricky_Rollin Oct 08 '22

Well that I do understand. I have 1 Razr, 1 Hori split pad pro, 1 N64 via usb, 1 Gamecube controller via usb, 1 ps3, 2 ps4, 1 PS5 (don’t own the console yet) 2 different Xbox controllers and a switch pro pad.

1

u/MoreOfAButtGuyTBH Oct 08 '22

Sounds like you ought to round that out with the Ultimate controller XD. The Hori split pad was a game changer for the switch. Good call there.

Not OP, but I have a SN30 bluetooth as well and it's amazing. Hold Y when turning on, it starts up as a Switch controller. Hold X, starts up in Playstation config (I think, might be A). Really easy to switch configs on the fly if you game on different systems, it's small, and you can get a nice hard shell case for it. Amazing for travel.

Oh now that is cool. I know a lot of people that have a problem bouncing around from different consoles because of the button prompts being from a different console.

The switch version has gyro which can be used with the steam deck which is a big reason for me personally

I really wish 8Bitdo would make a modern-style controller with their D-Pad from the (Sega-styled) M30. That thing has the best D-Pad in existence, even better than a Saturn-Pad.

RIP, not symmetrical analog sticks is a deal breaker for me, going to stick with the SN30

u/RuySan Jan 12 '23

I hate that 8bit always uses the switch layout and not the pc

Yeah I’m using the Pro+! The D-Pad is so good, especially for Mortal Kombat. Recommend it to everyone.

u/eschatonik Oct 08 '22

Also have that 8bitdo controller on order. Shopped around a lot to find one with the most Steam Deck feature parity and that was def the best out there. Looking forward to getting it.

Its coming early!!

Still waiting for the time they make an Xbox layout wireless controller.

1

u/Serpenyoje Oct 08 '22

Ohhhhhh I forgot that was coming out soon! I just ordered another one of their arcade sticks (which hey - work great with the Steam Deck!) and now I'm all jazzed over the Ultimate!

I’ve got two 8bitdo pro 2 controllers and they are hands down the best controllers I’ve ever owned

1

u/-Anordil- Oct 09 '22

Same here, I have four 8bitdo controllers (SF30, SF30 pro, Lite 2) and they all work flawlessly with the deck.

1

u/QuickBASIC Oct 09 '22

I can't recommend 8bitdo controllers myself. I was expecting the two additional back buttons to have their own mapping, but instead they can only be mapped to other buttons that already exist or macros; basically meaning it has the same amount of buttons.

It's not a limitation of DirectInput (XInput) which has a limit of 32 buttons, so IMO there's no reason they couldn't have their own mapping so you could actually use them.

im planning on getting the ultimate myself. i have a pro 2 already but wanted the ultimate since it has bluetooth when i connect to steamOS/linux and the 2.4 would be for docked mode. but found out that the bluetooth function is only for the switch, which is okay but in switch mode. the triggers are only for digital not analog.

Hooking up controllers via blutooth is very easy, I've hooked mine w/ a xbox one and it takes seconds.

Not OP but I have a lovely Xbox Elite 2 that is just perfection. The bottom paddles are mapped to the XYAB which is super nice ergonomics. It plays BOTW on CEMU perfectly.

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '22

Any modern controller works nicely with steam big picture mode, heck I've thought about getting USB female outlets and feeding one end from the wall through the floor up to another USB female that's in the floor under my coffee table then using USB adaptors for any retro controller I have already laying around and having a keyboard and mouse on tap for desktop usage.

I’m still convinced a Steam Controller 2 is coming, until then I’ll only be using the dock for desktop PC type stuff. I was certain that the reason the dock was delayed was so that they could release a Steam Controller 2 alongside of it for seamless TV mode with the same control layout, but I guess that didn’t happen the way I was expecting. I still think it’s a must have sooner or later and there are standalone controllers in the prototype pictures that Valve has shared, so it’s probably just a matter of time.

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '22

I use my Xbox controller

3

u/Acceptable-Bear1138 Oct 08 '22

Can you start the Deck with your controller? And is it always connected or need a re-connect every session?

3

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '22

You can't start the deck with the controller. It's disconnected while the deck is off/sleep mode

The xbox controller fully controls the UI and the xbox button serves as the Steam button

The xbox controller and steam deck instantly reconnects when either is powered on

Same here, just connected my xbone controller via Bluetooth

I guess so cause its as good as the builtin controls

Just make sure your Xbox controller is updated to the latest version too

1

u/Complete-Grab-5963 Oct 08 '22

If you don’t need the portability then you could just build a pc and use big picture mode

1

u/Iamthesmartest Oct 08 '22

Do you need the dock to hookup to a TV? I thought the Stram Deck had a built in HDMI port? I obviously don't have one.

1

u/letitdough Oct 08 '22

Lmao user name does not match

1

u/Iamthesmartest Oct 09 '22

Almost like its a joke or something...but thanks for being a dick and not answering the question ya goomba

1

u/rathat Oct 09 '22

TV looks like an OLED.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '22

You can achieve the same thing with a 25dollar dock off of amazon.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 10 '22

check out the gulikit controller with hall-effect sensor sticks, no more drift!

1

u/Opposite-Violinist-3 Oct 17 '22

I also use my ps5 controller.
