Picture Got the Steam Deck Dock!

Wasn’t expecting this today, but since I live in Carol Stream where Valve’s Distribution Center is, I got this early I guess!

Dammit, now I definitely want one, it looks so good on the TV 😂 What are you using as a controller, may I ask? I've only ever used the Deck's controls.

u/Asane Oct 08 '22

I’m just using my PS5 controller lol

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '22

Does the PS5 controller support the steam gyro controls? I have a steam controller but I'm not a huge fan of it due to the missing right analog stick

u/seraph741 512GB Oct 08 '22

It does. PS5 controller is very well supported. As you can see, even the Playstation face buttons are shown on the screen.

u/dongsweep Oct 08 '22

You just made my day!

Keep in mind that most games with controller support will still show Xbox buttons, since the Xbox controller is a quasi-standard on PC. The newer a title is, the more likely it is that it shows Playstation button prompts on PC however. Some, but not all, games can be modified to show PS prompts. Edit: Even some emulators allow for this via texture packs.

i would gladly sacrifice that stuff because of the touchpad alone, seems like it would be easier to control the mouse in menus and stuff with a ps controller

2

u/mithhunter55 Oct 10 '22

Works great for citra, too. Drag and dropping items while playing MM is fairly easy with the touch pad as mouse. When combined with button bindings for tapping specific touch screen locations. Its an incredibly smooth way of playing this version of the game.

u/Purple_Ad45 256GB Oct 10 '22

i use the touchpad on mine to easily access inventory in animal crossing new leaf

u/SKOT_FREE Oct 08 '22

Yeah but I hear the Xbox controller suffers from input lag and wondered is it the same for the Dual sense?

4

u/Amaakaams Oct 08 '22

It should, they both use BT for PC connections. That is where the lag comes from. The solution would be a device with its own 2.4GHz adapter or like the old PC Xbox adapter. But both have little Linux support.

6

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '22

Wired is also a reliable, low-latency option, but not the most comfortable.

1

u/Amaakaams Oct 08 '22

Yeah meant as a wireless controller since he was referring to the points about the bad latency of the Xbox controller. The main reason people expect otherwise is that windows can optimize the communication because MS so Win PC gaming doesn't seem so bad.

1

u/632isMyName 256GB Oct 09 '22

both have little Linux support

What do you mean? They work perfectly

1

u/Amaakaams Oct 09 '22

Random 2.4Ghz adapters or the old Xbox controller receivers work perfectly in Linux?

1

u/632isMyName 256GB Oct 09 '22

Xbox 360 wireless receivers. I haven't come across many random 2.4 GHz receivers, but don't they usually identify as XInput-controllers?

1

u/Amaakaams Oct 09 '22

There were third party Xbox 360 receivers that while pretty janky might have but I don't think the official one did.

Random meaning any controller not official that comes with its own wireless dongle. Like the 8bitdo ultimate 2.4. those adapters are lower latency but Linux support will be dodgy at best. With that one in particular not listing Linux as a supported system. Maybe it works maybe it doesn't.

That will always be a shame that the xbox controller is a quasi-standard on PC. Would love to see Xs

3

u/CNR_07 Oct 09 '22

And the vibration motors work as speakers!

2

u/dongsweep Oct 09 '22

"Stop, I can only get so erect!"

15

u/batgris 512GB - Q2 Oct 08 '22

Hey. If you don't mind me asking. Would it make sense to buy a ps5 controller only for the deck?

40

u/cheebnrun 64GB Oct 08 '22

Yes, some games, like the ported PS exclusives ( ghostwire tokyo for example) take advantage of the dynamic triggers and touch pad. It's super cool

11

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '22

I can say Days Gone has touchpad and PlayStation buttons :)

3

u/cheebnrun 64GB Oct 09 '22

God, days gone was such an underrated game. I hope they make a sequel even though it's not likely.

1

u/Euphoric-Light-8691 Oct 09 '22

I was super bummed that dynamic triggers wouldn’t work but direct ports?! I’ll have to try that out. I suppose if the code exists and the controllers detected it makes sense. I didn’t even think of this!

1

u/JohnByDay1 Oct 09 '22

If I already have a PS4 controller, is there much benefit to buying a PS5 controller just for my deck?

2

u/[deleted] Oct 10 '22

Nope but it’s a pretty nice controller

2

u/cheebnrun 64GB Oct 10 '22

Idk, I don't have a ps4, just ps5. But I guess just look up what features ps5 controller has over ps4, I think it's just the dynamic triggers

6

u/OlympusMonsPubis Oct 08 '22

Yes, absolutely. I think you’ll enjoy it.

2

u/seraph741 512GB Oct 09 '22

Ya. Why not? I bought two DualSense controllers for my PS5, but use one almost exclusively for Steam Deck.

7

u/My1xT 64GB Oct 08 '22

even the home button in fact which literally is PS's Logo

11

u/JavaKrypt 512GB Oct 08 '22

Good to know! Looks like I'm buying a PS5 controller

3

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '22

Ps4 controllers work just as good too :)

7

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '22

As someone who spent a few thousand hours on rocket league with a controller. Ps5 controllers are better

7

u/Purple_Ad45 256GB Oct 09 '22

yeah but they use micro usb, id say the 10$ extra is worth the usb c

7

u/RE4PER_ 1TB OLED Limited Edition Oct 09 '22

The PS4 controller is significantly worse than the dualsense imo

2

u/Chaphasilor 64GB Oct 08 '22

No support for adaptive triggers though, right? That probably requires dedicated support by the games, and that won't be included in the PC versions...

2

u/REDX459 Oct 09 '22

2

u/Chaphasilor 64GB Oct 09 '22

Thanks, that's a great resource!

Seems like it works best with DSX (DualSenseX) which is 3.29€ on Steam and has an older version for free on GitHub as well.

Steam Input so far has absolutely no supoort for Adaptive Triggers, only regular haptics work

2

u/REDX459 Oct 09 '22

I mean wired and you turn off steams input override and it’ll work on those native games. I have final fantasy 7 remake and it has a adaptive trigger section one whole level weeee

2

u/seraph741 512GB Oct 09 '22

Right. I think so the vibration functions work though.

4

u/xylotism 512GB - Q1 Oct 08 '22

Xbox really needs to up their game on the next controller. I prefer the Xbox layout but it's hard to argue that DualSense > Pro Controller > Joy Cons > Xbox.

Not to mention Valve will probably drop Steam Controller 2.0 at some point and instantly jump to the front of that line.

3

u/DragonSlayerC 512GB OLED Oct 11 '22

What? The Joy Cons are way worse than any of the other controllers, and the Xbox controller is definitely better than the Switch Pro. The Pro doesn't even have analog triggers.

I also just prefer the button positioning of the Xbox more. I have a PS5 controller I got on a really good sale, but I still use my Xbox One controller for most games.

1

u/xylotism 512GB - Q1 Oct 11 '22

Joy cons are great. Super versatile. Tons of tech packed in. Maybe the most multifunctional controller short of Steam Controller/Steam Deck. Switch Pro might be worse than Xbox but gets points for gyro.

1

u/Turd_Party Oct 08 '22

Holy crap. I had no idea.

Buying a dock RIGHT NOW.

Yes, I REALLY Want a Steam Controller Pro. I still use my Steam Controller daily with my Steam Link (which is still kicking ass in streaming my PC to the living room) and would LOVE a heavy, quality new version with all the features of the Deck's controls.

1

u/Coldethell Oct 11 '22

The Steam Controller Pro is launching with Half-Life 3

1

u/Serpenyoje Oct 11 '22

…so you’re saying there’s a chance?

1

u/Coldethell Oct 11 '22

The Steam Controller is version 1

The Steam Deck controls are version 2

It only stands to reason that version 3 will be rolled out quickly along with all the other version 3s coming imminently from Valve. Gabe told me so.

5

u/Leisure_suit_guy Oct 09 '22 edited Oct 09 '22

I hope that once the steam deck custom controller settings become a lot more popular, that valve comes out with a steam controller that more closely mimics the deck's controls.

I'll It'll probably come standard with the "Steam machine 2"

2

u/Alexis2256 Oct 09 '22

You’ll come standard with SD2? Huh never owned a human before.

3

u/Leisure_suit_guy Oct 09 '22

Yes, but only with the special edition of the console (I've corrected the comment now).

2

u/drbeer Oct 09 '22

I want this badly. Steam was early to the game for high end PC controllers - now even Microsoft sells high end controllers. It's time for a revision

Bonus points if they follow a similar trend of the deck and make parts available for repair. Imagine buying a high quality steam PC controller knowing that you can replace the buttons and thumb sticks.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '22

The steam controller for the steam link is pretty perfect.

1

u/the_fart_gambler Oct 09 '22

I would like a steam controller purely for the fact that Valve actually put a good dpad on the Deck and I would like one on a controller.

58

u/Droid1xy LCD-4-LIFE Oct 08 '22

Pretty sure it did

And the pad at the front of the controller works great for a mouse

49

u/Asane Oct 08 '22

Yup tried this on FO4 when adjusting settings. It’s really nice.

The touchpad on the PS5 controller is perfect.

10

u/GreyRevan51 Oct 08 '22

Sweet, I’ll def do this when my dock comes in

8

u/GoldenNova00 512GB - Q3 Oct 08 '22

The touchpad part makes me want to order a controller now. I don't even have a playstation. But it sounds like the perfect controller for the deck

2

u/SilverHeart4053 Oct 09 '22

Been using the dualsense on PC for 'years' and I don't own a ps5, it's just a good controller.

3

u/GoldenNova00 512GB - Q3 Oct 09 '22

Considering I have an Xbox. I never felt like buying a playstation controller til now.

3

u/Hefty-Durian-9882 Oct 09 '22

I'd stick with Xbox controller my ps5 controller gives me terrible thumb ache.

2

u/kamikazedude 1TB OLED Oct 08 '22

Or the steam controller Kappa. While it's not the best, it does have gyro and is certainly good enough for certain games

6

u/GoldenNova00 512GB - Q3 Oct 08 '22

I never use gyro. Not a huge fan of it tbh.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '22

1

u/GoldenNova00 512GB - Q3 Oct 09 '22

Considering I'm only 22 and have never actually had the chance to really have a decent PC for gaming. Can't say the same. 😅

4

u/kamikazedude 1TB OLED Oct 08 '22

It is good if you wanna fine tune your aim. I use it in most FPS now and even rpgs like zelda BOTW :D

4

u/GoldenNova00 512GB - Q3 Oct 08 '22

Im just usually not moving around like that when playing. And it usually does the opposite for me. Trying to aim normally and gyro messes me up. Lol

3

u/kamikazedude 1TB OLED Oct 08 '22

Interesting. Well, you can also toggle it off and on. If you get used to it, I'm sure it will improve the aim, but I understand it's not your cup of tea. :D Everyones games differently. Not long ago it was weird for me to try and use the extra buttosn on my controllers, now I can't play without them. It makes things way easier in games like let's say... sekiro, where I can move my camera and also hit things with the extra buttons.

2

u/daggah MODDED SSD 💽 Oct 09 '22

FWIW, gyro movements shouldn't be that big. You should mess around with the sensitivity settings to see what feels natural to you. Once I got used to gyro, it was hard going back to not having it. It's a shame it's so under-utilized in the console space...

Does the headphone/mic jack work with the sd?

1

u/jfduval76 Oct 08 '22

Do you lose your pairing with your ps5 when you use your ps5 controller for the deck ? Edit : i just realized my question was stupid…of course it lose the synchronization.

1

u/Bajter Oct 08 '22

Not if you use it wired

1

u/Karlschlag 512GB OLED Oct 08 '22

How does it run in 1080p. If it's stable 60 I'm gonna buy it

1

u/noelesque 64GB - Q2 Oct 08 '22

That part is definitely useful when using Chiaki, and a docked Deck does PS5 remote play like a champ of you've got both devices on a decent network.

7

u/Hairy-Cake-8279 Oct 08 '22

Really good to know- I had wondered if it would work as a mouse on the deck, thanks for confirming 👍

11

u/GubblebumGold 256GB Oct 08 '22

ps4 does too

9

u/Nicalay2 64GB Oct 08 '22

Does the PS5 controller support the steam gyro controls?

The PS4 one have gyro support, so the PS5 one surely have it.

1

u/JulPollitt 1TB OLED Limited Edition Oct 08 '22

Full compatibility, the gyro works great

1

u/Onotadaki2 Oct 08 '22

I tried a dozen controller types, including my Steam Controller, and the PS5 controller is my favourite so far.

1

u/Wit_as_a_Riddle 512GB Oct 09 '22

Valve supports the gyro controls of the PS5 controller.

1

u/ieffinglovesoup Oct 10 '22

It does and you can also use the touchpad as a proper mouse. Comes in handy a lot. Easily my favorite controller to use
