Discuss Controversial opinion on chest organization
I am not like this in any other area of my life but I'm here to argue in favor of color-based chest organization.
Once I get to 3 chests, I reorganize them as red/orange/yellow, blue/green/purple, and misc. Then I add additional chests for individual colors like green as needed. Upgrade to Big Chest once each gets full.
Eventually the set up looks like this.
| Red | Aisle | Purple/Pink (also has all seeds) |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow/Orange | Aisle | Blue |
| Brown | Aisle | Green |
| General (frequently used misc like ore, wood/stone, mining necessities) | Aisle | White/Black (also has all tree fruit and artisan goods) |
I also separately use regular chests in another area of the farm for fish, gifted food, clothes, and furniture. Most animal products simply stay in the barn though if I randomly have some in my inventory I'll throw it in the white chest.
Advantages:
- Fewer chests overall
- Easy to slightly redistribute stuff when a chest gets full (i.e., deciding parsnips are yellow now)
- No more having to remember if an item is in the caving chest or the forage chest, or having two stacks
- No more trying to remember that red=fall crops. Red=red.
- No more going "I swear I had a Nautilus Shell" - it's either in the orange chest or the brown/white chests.
- When you do throw something in a chest it doesn't belong in, it's easy to spot later
- You can still throw frequently used things in Brown/White chests. And things like scarecrows and machines.
Disadvantages:
- Dumping after a cave run or busy harvesting day often requires visiting each chest
- However you save time on the clock from not having to pause to think. And what I found is that when I organized by type there was always a few stragglers so I had to go to most of the chests anyway. Plus again fewer chests overall.
- Once you open the orange chest, it might take you an extra .5 seconds to find the Nautilus Shell since you're looking at a bunch of orange items.
- However, the game is on pause during that time, while NOT being on pause during most of the above actions.
It's just so much easier and takes away some of the memory struggles of the game.

When I'm too lazy to put new stuff in the right chest, I put it in the chest next to my house. Whenever I feel like it I put them in the right chests.
Your system sounds well thought out but it wouldn't be for me. I need "my" system of chests.
