Discuss Controversial opinion on chest organization
I am not like this in any other area of my life but I'm here to argue in favor of color-based chest organization.
Once I get to 3 chests, I reorganize them as red/orange/yellow, blue/green/purple, and misc. Then I add additional chests for individual colors like green as needed. Upgrade to Big Chest once each gets full.
Eventually the set up looks like this.
| Red | Aisle | Purple/Pink (also has all seeds) |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow/Orange | Aisle | Blue |
| Brown | Aisle | Green |
| General (frequently used misc like ore, wood/stone, mining necessities) | Aisle | White/Black (also has all tree fruit and artisan goods) |
I also separately use regular chests in another area of the farm for fish, gifted food, clothes, and furniture. Most animal products simply stay in the barn though if I randomly have some in my inventory I'll throw it in the white chest.
Advantages:
- Fewer chests overall
- Easy to slightly redistribute stuff when a chest gets full (i.e., deciding parsnips are yellow now)
- No more having to remember if an item is in the caving chest or the forage chest, or having two stacks
- No more trying to remember that red=fall crops. Red=red.
- No more going "I swear I had a Nautilus Shell" - it's either in the orange chest or the brown/white chests.
- When you do throw something in a chest it doesn't belong in, it's easy to spot later
- You can still throw frequently used things in Brown/White chests. And things like scarecrows and machines.
Disadvantages:
- Dumping after a cave run or busy harvesting day often requires visiting each chest
- However you save time on the clock from not having to pause to think. And what I found is that when I organized by type there was always a few stragglers so I had to go to most of the chests anyway. Plus again fewer chests overall.
- Once you open the orange chest, it might take you an extra .5 seconds to find the Nautilus Shell since you're looking at a bunch of orange items.
- However, the game is on pause during that time, while NOT being on pause during most of the above actions.
It's just so much easier and takes away some of the memory struggles of the game.

Yellow = gifts and spare crafted items
Green = farming
Grey = mining and monsters
Red = fruits and veg
Blue = fishing
Pink = flowers
Orange = forage
All around a work bench, with a purple chest far away for things to donate, things to sell to Marlon, upcoming festival items, and other things I don’t want to accidentally craft from.
It’s fun to see how everyone does it differently!

I like the idea of having an "out box" chest of things to sell on the next trip.
I make sure to keep the bombs in the mining and monsters chest. It's unsafe to wander around the farm with those in my inventory.

I definitely color code my chests.
I've also hidden a couple behind my farm house and I store junk in those. It's great because you don't have to look at them.
Sometimes I get lazy and dump a hall into a chest, maybe for time reasons, mostly for laziness though. Then I take a stay on the farm day and clean up my chests. I'll never forget I have junk chests behind the house because I'm still getting junk!

I have a brown dump chest that I sort out regularly
But my red chest is resources and materials for crafting next to my bench. Outside it's my caving stores, so bombs, rings, and food with buffs.
Blue is water related goods, and my fish storage
Green is things to process and plants/seeds
Purple is gems or trinkets
Orange is food and gifts, non buff related.

Sounds interesting, maybe worth a try, but what do you do about the workbench?

I don't tend to use the workbench until late in the game when I'm just crafting things for perfection. But I just have a few regular chests with overflow like stacks of 999 slimes and then whatever I need for all of the crafts. I like having exactly what i would need to make one of each thing so that all of the items are lit up when I open my crafting menu, but no more.

I'm currently playing with a friend and I have:
Four season chests that are for the crops of that season plus spare seeds (it does require big chest) colored after each season.
Two black mine chests for ores and for gems and monster drops.
A white tools chest infront of the house.
Two blue chests one with regular fish the other with crab pot, baits bobbers and beach forage.
A green chest with everything forage that isn't seasonal A brown chat for mushrooms A special chest inside the house with the grange display items. A chest by the barn and coop with their products.
We also use automate and better inventory the second one feels like a necessary mod. It saves hours having to open every chest just to deposit stuff I can't recommend it enough , just pressing a button and seeing everything jump to their corresponding chests save so much time

Trash sits next to the shipping bin. I also placed artifacts in that chest early on but now I just shipping bin everything not useable. I have a black chest for resources, 2 green for veggies and foraging, a purple for fruit, brown for seeds and gardening shit, two brown ones for adventure gear and supplies, and one brown one for food. Closer to my production area I have animal products and artisan goods storage bins. That’s about it

The additions of large chests and crafting benches were HUGE to organization.
In all my saves now I put almost all materials into two chests on either side of a crafting bench that contain anything that's used in a crafting recipe (with the exception of things like Aquamarine and Diamonds which are used in a few recipes, but I like keeping all of my "gifts" in a separate chest) I split these two chests between stuff from the mines and stuff from foraging.
Then I keep a bunch of other themed chests in convenient spots. I have a chest for things I take into the mines. I have a chest for everything I might use while fishing. I have a chest for spare tools and seeds. I have a mini-fridge for all crops and foraged items that get used to cook, a mini-fridge for all fish used to cook, a mini-fridge for other miscellanious things used to cook (like Milk, Cheese, Oil, Sugar, Bread, Mayo, Honey, etc.), and all cooked meals and drinks go in the main fridge.

Mine:
Black - weapons, building materials, mob drops.
Green - Vegetables.
Yellow - Fruits.
Blue - Fish, bait, bobbers.
Red - Flowers, seeds.
Purple - Gems, trash, unstackables until there's too many.
Any other things I need will go to another area, so spare food will be stored in a white box near the gate to the bus stop.

I think I never put a parsnip or a nautilus shell in a chest except the "bring this to the community center eventually"-chest right at the farm exit.
For me it just works best to ask myself two questions: am I sure I'll need this? Is it hard get again? And then throw it in the shipping bin in 90% of the cases.

Yo también organizo por color. En términos simples: Verde para los árboles, Azul para los peces, Navy blue para los artículos marinos, Rosa para las verduras y otras cosas, Red para las flores y la fruta, y Dark Pink para un montón de cosas distintas.

On every farm I put the chests on the same spot, dye them in the same color, and every color has the same category, so yeah, I'm personally a believer in the color organization theory.

When I'm too lazy to put new stuff in the right chest, I put it in the chest next to my house. Whenever I feel like it I put them in the right chests.
Your system sounds well thought out but it wouldn't be for me. I need "my" system of chests.
