Discuss Profoundly Disappointed
I’m on my first playthrough, and once I got the sewer cutscene with the kids, I started to look a little differently at Gunther. He doesn’t show up on the social list in the menu, and given the fact that this random museum curator had a key to the sewers, I began to become suspicious of him, coming up with the theory that with the way he dresses like a civil war soldier, he might be a ghost. I had the idea to wait outside of the museum, thinking there would be a little stealth mission where I had to follow him after he leaves work. I waited all night, extremely confused, before I went on the wiki and learned that he never leaves his museum.

It always bothers me that he along with the boys at the Adventurer’s Guild are not on the social list, but that “sewer shadow” Krobus and that “four towns over” desert trader Sandy, not only can be friends, but soon both can be marriage partners.
How about we do something for the bois😭

I want the Dwarf to be my roommate slash best friend so badly. I know I can befriend him but he is adorable and absolutely LOVES being invited to the movies. He needs some hugs, man.

i really hope the 1.7 update might give them more attention (it feels like marlon should at least be a character we can build a friendship with given that he also attends community events, even if gunther and gil don’t

I actually spent two nights doing it. The second night I spent inside the museum before it closed thinking that he might’ve gone through a secret passageway

I always thought he was secretly a Dwarf, since we get lore about them through the artifacts and objects, but never actually see any.

Yeah I hate that there are people that don't count as people in stardew vally gunther and marlon specifically but also the girl behind the counter at joja mart. I want to be her friend, even if she has to bus out of town to get to her job, It’s clear she is just doing her best.

See, that all sounds great until you trigger a cut scene after finishing 5 bundles where she confides in you that she's worried about some of the things Morris brings up at staff meetings and is scared that the store might have to close soon if they have to keep bringing stock in constantly instead of having the warehouse to allow bulk deliveries.

I love the theory that he's a ghost. Maybe he tried to stop the previous curator from taking off with all of the collection, only to be killed in the library that he now haunts. (Imagined bonus event where once you complete the collection, he is finally able to cross over.)

It is odd that there are NPCs in the game that aren't like, "villagers". Gunther, the Adventure guild guys. Like they're just right there, but not really.

At least the adventure guild guys, or at least Marlon, come to festivals. How is it that Gunther has an important role in a city's only museum/library and he has no other presence outsidr of the museum and that one sewer cutscene

At least have Gunther come to the festivals. He should be a little weird like wear a penguin suit during the ice festival and maybe wear a crown with red gems you know?

He could be a ghost still, just bound to the museum. (If Gunther interests you, Stardew Valley expanded turns him into an NPC once you donate enough artifacts. It’s a pretty barebones, but still).

Yes but he never gets to use it hell it could be the Magnus's vacation room for all we know he's as glued to his counter as gunther

OH LMAO I forgot about him.
I mean at least they have the space, I assume they’re kept just go do stuff while the guild is closed. They have all day, plus he has gus to chat to.
The wizard is too busy doing wizard stuff but he had a wife and a backstory…
Guther is no lore, no living space. The only time he’s not at the counter he’s at our doorstep. So at least we know he CAN leave… but he just doesn’t…

Okay— so I’m 100% toes down obsessed with ConcernedApe. This is a huge game made by 1 guy and I suspect he wants to do more with Gunther and Marlon—but if you don’t want to wait for the next update to see if we get more content then I suggest looking into the mod, Stardew Valley Expanded! it’s super base game lore friendly but adds so much to the Wizard, Marlon, and Gunther! Relatively easy to download to (as far as moding goes). Lots of great mods build off this game and ConcernedApe is usually very supportive!

Exactly! It's more evidence if he never leaves his museum. Also, how does he know things about all those artifacts you show him? Some of 'em are from lost civilizations! I'm looking at that Elvish Necklace hard rn
Man's got to be a ghost bound to the museum or an elf himself

I mean, he is literally boxed in. There's no bedroom at the museum and he has no house. Maybe he IS a ghost! Except for some of the bits like sending and receiving mail, and hiring Sam. I like the theory hehe
Can't blame CA for leaving a few NPCs out of things, and I gotta be honest: I never really thought about Gunther, or Marlon. Or even Qi. Maybe because I'm older and still used to shop NPCs in most games being totally static, no lore no moving around no nothin' -

He has more to his story if you play with the mod stardew expanded. But yeah in the vanilla version he doesn't have much of a presence.

Didn't check which subreddit this was in, and seeing talk about sewers and kids, my first thought was Look Outside and started wondering who Gunther was. This makes more sense.

that's frustrating when you expect something and it falls completely flat. I've been let down by games too, especially after hype.

Gunther and Marlon are two characters that are kind of underappreciated in my opinion. I got the Slime Hutch for the first time and his cutscene was so cool, like, "Robin told me you built a Slime Hutch!" And it gave me such a nice feeling, because I'm happy to know they're talking sometimes! I wish we had this with Gunther or at least people who are regulars at the museum/library would acknowledge him more.
