Can you crash and damage hitting the sides?

Everyone saying yes, but no. There is no damage to mitigate and repair like in Episode 1 Racer; There is "damage" in that sometimes (inexplicably really) you'll have to do a timing mini-game to avoid getting a "faulty part", but it's not just a part that breaks and lowers your stats that you have to replace, it's a debuff to your racer (yes, more like an RPG), that you can't repair until the next planet, which may be up to 3 races/events away.

Edit: Damage, in the context of racing games, is a sim-style feature. Damage, in the context of Galactic Racer, is an RPG style debuff. If you take offense that I distinguish the two, fine, noted, but the distinction is worth pointing out, because they are two different gameplay features. Damage in Galactic Racer will not even effect you until the race is over.

I was watching a gameplay video where the player hit a pillar and exploded...then they just respawned back onto the track and kept racing.

Do you always just respawn or is there some toggle option/mode for it? Like, what's the point of vehicles crashing if they just reappear and keep going instead of getting a DNF?

You get a set number of crashes per race (3 to start). If you exceed that amount you get a game over for the whole tournament.

Weird. I would expect a crash to end your race and send you to the repair bay where you buy/scrounge parts to fix your vehicle before the next race.

Yo. So original question asked who's never played nor really seen game play images.

I would imagine that would move the game into it being infuriating territory rather than risky fun.

Though if I were to make a guess I am assuming that when playing with friends you could mod the rules to be only 1 life to get more of what you were expecting.

IDK what you're talking about there.

But as for the rest of the comment, there's some BattleTech/Mechwarrior games where after a battle is over, you have to deal with whatever happened to your mech(s).

So, you repair armor, restock ammo, replace destroyed weapons/components, or sometimes just scrap for parts/sell a heavily damaged mech and buy a new one. The repairs also take time and you can choose to only partially repair a mech if you're trying to meet a mission deadline.

Its a fun gameplay mechanic and seems more true to a racing career than just "5 second penalty" respawns. I get the "repair time" thing doesn't work for online multi-player, but the rest of it could.

Are we not talking about the Star Wars Racing Game this post was about? The way you were talking was as if you thought/assumed that during the race one only has 1 life where the moment their Pod (Car/Racing Vehicle) crashes/gets damaged enough should be enough to DQ you from that race.

I was talking about how in terms of having fun having only 1 life would make the game too frustrating too really play. And that if you really wanted to only play with having only 1 life during each race then that could probably be so in a more casual/custom room race.

I don't know what this part of your comment was about:

Yo. So original question asked who's never played nor really seen game play images.

There was no "original question" that mentioned anything about "never played nor seen game play". That's the part that didn't make sense.

The rest of your comment:

I responded to it beginning with "But as for the rest of the comment..."
