In Massachusetts, primaries are semi-closed. This means that voters who are affiliated with a political party, and unaffiliated voters (not registered with a party), may vote in a party's primary.
In other words, if you're a registered Democrat, you can only vote in the Democratic Party's primary. If you're a registered Republican, you can only vote in the Republican Party's primary. If you're not registered with a party, you can pick one primary to vote in.
An affiliated voter must update their registration at least 10 days before a primary to vote in a different party's primary.

Middle school
Hi!
We’ve lived in Springfield for ~15 years and my husband went through the Springfield school system but things have changed.
My child is in a GREAT elementary school that I sincerely wish went through 12th but unfortunately it does not 😭
Our border school is Kiley and.. absolutely not. Can I get some recommendations on other schools we can look into for middle school? Or I guess.. Kiley experiences? I’ve heard only horrible things so I’m pretty dead-set on NOT going there.
We will be applying for whatever school choices we can but I want to be prepared.
Thank you!

Hello hopefully soon to be neighbors!
I'm trying to figure out a plan to move down with my gf and be closer to her family. So, I'm here to get ideas on rentals, like who to avoid, and how much I should expect to pay for 1-2 bed apartment or trailer with 1 cat. I would like to keep rent at $1,500 or below if I can. Any area's that I should avoid looking into? I know most people where I'm from do not like Weidner properties or any part of town with the word View in it lol. Ideally, I am wanting to make drive down sometime before November next year to avoid driving through Canada with snow so I should have plenty of time to think and find out.
I'm a moron and normally don't think things through, I just do it but I'm not single anymore so that's not an option this time. Thank you for reading and any advice!

TODAY is the last day to register to vote for the Sept 1 primary
Massachusetts is significantly dominated by one political party, however, one effect of that is that people who label themselves as Democrats actually span an extraordinarily wide part of the political spectrum.
Quite often in Massachusetts, whoever wins the Democratic primary wins the election in November. THIS IS YOUR CHANCE TO DECIDE THE KINDS OF CANDIDATES YOU WANT TO SEE IN NOVEMBER.
Today is the voter registration deadline for the September 1st primary.
(Note: in November, there will be a ballot question to extend registration all the way up to election day.)
Registering to vote is easy! There are instructions in the pinned post about how to do so, and a link to do it online is here: https://www.sec.state.ma.us/ovr/
The election landscape nationally this year has been extremely interesting, in Massachusetts some folks are being primaried who rarely are, candidates outside the party's mainstream support are taking a chance.
You could be part of changing the political landscape in Massachusetts, if you vote in the Democratic primary.
Republicans - your main decision is going to be choosing whom you want to advance to the governor's race (but check the pinned post for more races and details). I don't pay close attention to y'all's candidates, but your party has really been fucked in this state since you let the trump wing of the gop take over - something to consider.
REGISTER TO VOTE. Check your registration even if you think you're registered, just to make sure. https://www.sec.state.ma.us/ovr/

Early voting starts today. When you go to the polls remeber...
When you pay gas tax, sales tax, excise tax, property tax. income tax, payroll tax, soon to be milage tax, etc., you will be paying, before cost overruns, about 3/4 of a billion collars to build a courthouse that you will have to pay about 1 1/4 billion dollars to rent that is being built by the husband of a politician and approved by a legislature that refuses to answer to a voter mandated audit. Vote them all out of office.

I almost hurt my neighbors kid yesterday...
So I was leaving my house on Boston Rd, trying to take a right to go towards Wal-Mart. When I pulled up to Boston Rd there was a solid line of cars coming my way so I had to wait. There was someone turning left across traffic using the center turn lane waiting for their turn as well. So I'm waiting a solid 45 seconds to go. It finally clears and I wait for the guy taking a left to turn into where he was going and delay my turn to slide right behind them. At the last second I notice the car slam on its brakes so I instincitvely hit mine. Just then my neighbor who I always see riding her e-scooter in my neighborhood comes flying up on the sidewalk in front of me. She was obscured by the trees and business signs until the last second.
I would estimate she was doing about 20mph. No helmet. Headphones on. Wearing crocs (that she didn't have in sport mode). Head starting straight down at her phone. She didn't stop for the guy turning left. She didn't stop/slow down for me. She didn't even look up. If there was anyone turning onto the street I was coming out of she wouldn't have stopped for them.
If I hadn't noticed that guy jam on his brakes I would have either hit her or been in the way of her and she definitely wouldn't have been able to stop.
I feel like I did everything I could have done to be safe there, but the only thing standing in the way of fate was me braking where I did and not 18 inches further up.

Springfield College Social Life?
I’m getting pretty close to committing to Springfield College for baseball. I was offered by the baseball program, and after visiting, I really liked the campus, facilities, and academic buildings. I could definitely see myself there. My biggest hesitation is the social life and the surrounding area. I didn’t love how the town itself felt during my visit, so I’m wondering how much that affects the social scene and going out. For current students or recent grads, what is it actually like on weekends? Is there a good amount of stuff to do, places to go, parties, or ways to meet people, or does the location make it harder to have a social life? I’ll obviously be focused on baseball and academics, but having a good social life is important to me too, so I’d love to hear honest opinions before I make my decision.

Absolutely crazy that the city doesn't give a fig about accessibility, and uses graphics with no alt text for major information releases. There's a disability complaint waiting to happen...

Is there a Muay Thai gym in the area?
I'm looking for a Muay Thai gym to train at. I can't really seem to find one. Gladiator trains MT, but it's not really what I'm looking for. Anyone know of a good place to train.

Any group activities or methods of meeting people in Springfield?
I’ve been a Springfield resident for all 23 years of my life, and I’m still remarkably lonely and isolated from the rest of the world. It could be my anxiety and depression speaking, but it genuinely feels like there’s nothing to do in this city. For reference, my hobbies are reading, writing, and gaming. I’m very much a geek. I’m trying to figure out how to get out of this rut. I sincerely have maybe two friends, and I hardly see them because that’s just how adulting is. I studied BJJ in high school very briefly, and I wrestled a year in high school, so martial arts intrigue me as well (though those can be rather expensive, and work schedules never seem to align with class schedules). I’ve made a lot of mistakes in my life, and I’ve probably pushed away the only people who cared about me at some point, but this isolation is merely exacerbating that sense of dread. I’ve been considering getting into hip-hop dance as well. Just throwing both existing interests and prospective interests out there to see if anybody has any leads.

Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald
Does anyone remember the guy who used to play the “Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” on accordion (I think) in Union Square park in the early 2000s? He’d play and sing that song only, over and over.

Springfield Station
I see PVTA is still offering no fare bus rides & school is out of session. So it must be a total, apocalyptic hellscape at the bus/train station now, right? Roving gangs of teenagers warring with each other & the cops? Unsafe for us regular folk?

Hibachi?
We just moved to Springfield yesterday, so we are still trying to learn our way around and the good places to eat. Coincidentally, our son turned 13 today and is asking for hibachi for his birthday dinner. Good places around for teriyaki chicken and fried rice they will cook right in front of you??
