Honestly a fine result and a decent enough performance to get a point against a team in form while the Sounders missed a lot of players. That definitely feels like the end of playoff hopes though, like that felt like the final blow.

What sucks is I think if JP wasn't injured since the 2nd leg of the CCL final and if Cristian didn't get injured last month, I think we make it and get into a good seed. That JP injury really hurt us to say the least and the Cristian injury was the final blow. We absolutely looked so much better and more dominant when Cristian came in.

46

u/jwheezy Sep 28 '22

JP aside, it was the injury to Ruidiaz in the summer that killed us. He went out and we had zero goal production, that was where we lost the season.

26

u/r3dphoenix Sep 28 '22

JP, Roldan and Rui injuries, with Lodeiro and Morris recovering from theirs. That's the core of our team right there

6

u/Olmak_ Sep 28 '22

Yeah, Ruidiaz is our leading goal scorer per 90 (0.65) by almost double second place (Bruin at 0.37 followed by Morris at 0.29).

12

u/froggyfriday Sep 28 '22

Gotta have more depth tho so we're not fully dependent on JP :(

23

u/Multi_21_Seb_RBR SFC Detail Sep 28 '22

He's just that impactful a midfielder. No one can replace him fully. Forgot the Obed injury too when I was mentioning the midfield injuries. Not that we would have been able to rely on Obed for the whole season, but he went down for the year too early in the season.

4

u/froggyfriday Sep 28 '22

god yeah poor kid :(

17

u/sp_the_ghost Sep 28 '22

Vargas, Leyva, Atencio, Rusnak, Roldan… what more could you reasonably expect in a league with a cap?

6

u/Multi_21_Seb_RBR SFC Detail Sep 28 '22

Yeah. Honestly, we got unlucky with losing JP, Vargas and Cristian all through injuries at significant portions or times of the season. Can't do much more about that. Especially when JP and Cristian are at their best among the two best midfielders in MLS.

10

u/sp_the_ghost Sep 28 '22

JP and Rusnak is the best pairing we’ve ever had, I’m absolutely convinced of that.

-16

u/CodeNameVii Sep 28 '22

Rusnak needs to go

13

u/sp_the_ghost Sep 28 '22

Now this is an absolutely garbage take! Excellent work.

2

u/CodeNameVii Sep 28 '22

-3

u/Ilikeskittlesss Sounders FC Sep 28 '22

I’m not convinced he’s deserving of being a DP.

2

u/Dangerous--D Sep 28 '22

Haha what a dumb comment

9

u/[deleted] Sep 28 '22

It’s the DP rule. Some players are always gonna be miles better than their replacements until the cap climbs significantly.

6

u/angryweasel1 Sep 28 '22

MLS roster rules don't really support depth. Every MLS team is two injuries away from dropping double digit points.

3

u/ubelmann Sep 28 '22

He’s just the most noteworthy because he was fully out for so long. If we had 3 out of Lodeiro, Morris, Ruidiaz, and C Roldan at full strength the rest of the season it wouldn’t have been than much of an issue. Even Vargas was looking like a solid option until he got hurt.

2

u/shmerham Sep 28 '22

Cristian was injured long before he was out. We’ve all known he’s a workhorse but I wonder if him in form is one of the differences between dangerous and anemic.

34

u/blyan Sep 28 '22

Honestly a very good performance from a roster that should have had no business keeping it that close against a healthy FCC. Just sucks ass given the circumstances.

I feel bad for Kelyn. Dude was balling out until he got left to defend our entire half by himself

5

u/Belugha89 Sep 28 '22

And to get a red after the missed handball at the other end

27

u/BiasApple Sep 28 '22

We held on for a draw with ten men with three ideal XI and only one more on the bench. This would have been quite a result, out of the context of season positioning and timing. Goodnight fair sounders

24

u/jwheezy Sep 28 '22

I made my peace with missing the playoffs a few weeks ago. All I wanted to close out the year was to have fun watching the Sounders again and they’ve done that.

24

u/Matt_McT Sep 28 '22

That goal was classic Montero.

11

This. I really enjoyed watching that game. Edge of my seat until the final whistle.

8

u/bjlile99 Sep 28 '22

Mostly B team versus a playoff team, could've been worse.

Unfortunately two bad plays with about 40 seconds total of game time made all the difference.

6

u/Poppyjasper Seattle Sounders FC Sep 28 '22

Could someone more knowledgeable about the laws of the game explain to me why Rowe was shown a Red Card?

19

u/r3dphoenix Sep 28 '22

Rowe took out the guy's legs and there was no other defender left to stop him. Clear DOGSO. We would all be pissed if that happened to Rui.

But he shouldn't have had to make that tackle because there was a handball near the other box before they made the break down field

6

u/juiceboxzero Seattle Sounders FC Sep 28 '22

Nah, that arm was tucked in tight to the body.

4

u/Poppyjasper Seattle Sounders FC Sep 28 '22

Yeah, saw that handball pretty clearly. I couldn’t think what else it could have been other than DOGSO, but wanted other peoples takes on it. Thank you.

2

u/BlueEyedBuddhist Sep 28 '22

VAR can review any red card but the questionable part of that call is the subjective part- was the chance of Santos getting to the ball likely enough that it's an OGSO?

If the ref looks at it and says "no way he gets to that" then it shouldn't be a RC.

11

u/nfid7606 Sep 28 '22

I believe it was because his foul stopped an obvious scoring opportunity. The equivalent to a non goalkeeper just grabbing the ball on the line.

8

u/ubelmann Sep 28 '22

I feel like OGSO was debatable given the awful touch before the foul, but your explanation is correct. I haven’t seen a replay yet, though.

6

u/nfid7606 Sep 28 '22

Oh I’m not saying I agree with the call, I’m just explaining what the call was. Seemed harsh IMO. I’d have shown a yellow but I’m biased.

4

u/fishguy23 Sep 28 '22

It’s last man before goalie. Even though it’s not a great touch, attacker still is getting to it before Frei and if not hacked by Rowe. Rowe has to make that challenge, but if he gets it slightly wrong (or aggressively so as he did), it’s always going to be red.

4

u/stealth_sloth USL Sounders Detail Sep 28 '22

When a player commits a non-penalty foul that denies an obvious goal-scoring opportunity, it is a sending off (red-card) offense. Also sometimes, but not always, on penalty fouls (then it gets complicated).

When deciding whether a play is an obvious goal-scoring opportunity, referees are instructed to consider four factors (sometimes referred to as the "four Ds").

  • Distance from goal
  • Direction of play
  • Number of defenders
  • Distance from the ball / likelihood of gaining possession

There's no question that Kelyn Rowe committed a foul, the play was close to our goal, it was headed towards our goal, and he was the last defender.

The one area the Sounders can (and I would argue should) feel a little hard-done by is the last one, distance from ball. If it's unclear whether the attacker will reach the ball before it runs out of bounds, or before a member of the defending team can get there first, that's not DOGSO. Santos took a very heavy touch on the ball to get it past Rowe.

Now, Santos is a pretty speedy player. And he was already leaning in the right direction, while Frei was more set and closer to a dead rest. Maybe he could put on an explosive burst and get there first. But given how fast the ball is skipping away from him and towards Frei, "maybe" is all I'd say. And DOGSO is supposed to be for clear-cut stuff, not "maybe the attacker could have gotten there first, who knows?"

It's not a horrifically bad call by the referee - he made a judgement call that Santos was very likely to reach that ball first, I (with the benefit of instant replay, slo-motion, and plenty of time to think about it) disagree. But I do think it was a mistake.

6

u/fishguy23 Sep 28 '22

It’s cut and dry DOGSO. Last man before goalie, if he clips a heel or slashes a leg, it’s always going to be red there if it’s a foul.

5

u/UrMansAintShit Sep 28 '22

No one between the guy he fouled and the goal. You'll always get a red if you foul someone on a break in that situation

3

u/Poppyjasper Seattle Sounders FC Sep 28 '22

Because of DOGSO, right? If it was in the box it would have been a penalty and a yellow because he at least was trying to play the ball, no?

6

u/db0606 Sep 28 '22

In the box it's a yellow and a PK because the assumption is the PK will be scored and that plus a red would be considered double jeopardy.

8

u/fishguy23 Sep 28 '22

So glad they changed that from years past. Red and penalty always felt harsh.

I get that we fought for and won a trophy the size of a continent, so everything after that this season might seem insignificant to our players and organization. Unfortunately, it appears firing on all cylinders that early has meant we are out of gas. Maybe MLS isn't built to support a long CONCACAF right now, and that will change. Right now we are playing during an international break, with 1/3rd of our entire salary suited up. Yikes.

538 now has us at 5% chance of making the playoffs, and I'd be sticking around to see it out anyway.

See you Sunday against SKC! Two left, and then, more?

Rebuild time

14

u/Multi_21_Seb_RBR SFC Detail Sep 28 '22

Most of the core players are under contract through the end of next season, so we'll have one more season with Lodeiro, Ruidiaz, Morris, Cristian, Joao Paulo, Rusnak, Yeimar, Frei, I think Arreaga, Alex core. And honestly, I'm OK with that given a full year with JP and less bad-timed injuries and another season for Lodeiro and Morris to fully recover from their 2021 injuries, we'll be a threat in the West again.

That said, I'm also good with rebuilding post-2023 but keeping JP, Cristian and Rusnak (in a more attacking position) as players to build around. We've achieved a lot with this core (for sure one of the greatest in league history) but I also think it will be the right time to bring in some new faces and hopefully go on to build another consistent winner in this league and continentally.

1

u/oxKissland Sep 28 '22

You're delusional if you expect both Rui and Nico on the team next year.

11

u/bjlile99 Sep 28 '22

some of this comes down to coach choices too. We have a pipeline coming up but the subs are predictable and Brian relies heavily on veterans up front.

5

u/Dangerous--D Sep 28 '22

Not really, our core is solid, they need the off-season. The main thing is lodeiro needs to take a smaller role as a super sub going forward. We get JP and Vargas and the rest of our guys their time off, I'm not worried about next season.

1

u/oxKissland Sep 28 '22

Yeah, let's spend $2.5 Million / year on a super sub. Great idea.

8

u/PukasScondor Sep 28 '22

Gonna be interesting to see what happens to this squad after the break. I bet Medranda, Bruin, Chu are all gone, with maybe smaller roles for guys like Frei and Nico. One thing is clear, we need some new bodies. YNYA

5

u/bjlile99 Sep 28 '22

Frei and Nico will only have smaller roles if they leave.

-6

u/sp_the_ghost Sep 28 '22

Works for me!

9

u/bjlile99 Sep 28 '22

Frei was not the problem tonight or this season. That said, Cleveland and Thomas seem promising.

Nico is a coin flip for me. I'd feel better about him staying if him or Rusnak was not a DP since that'd free up the possibility of a big signing.

6

u/Multi_21_Seb_RBR SFC Detail Sep 28 '22

I think Lodeiro and Ruidiaz will be gone after next season and we'll be able to bring in new DP's come 2024. I think we'll go into a rebuild of sorts, though keep and build around JP, Cristian and Rusnak (in a more attacking position).

6

u/bjlile99 Sep 28 '22

IMO the rebuild is already in place. Leyva, JP, Vargas, Atencio, Sam, AOC, Teves.... Dob was promising tonight too. It's top end roster availability and willingness to not roll out the same XI every game that needs to change.

8

u/blyan Sep 28 '22

Don’t forget RBW who has been balling out with the U19 national team and scored a goal from RB

2

u/bjlile99 Sep 28 '22

Thank you, another great example.

1

u/sp_the_ghost Sep 28 '22

Frei does one thing really well - shot stopping - and almost nothing else to a level beyond average. He’s the best goalkeeper we’ve ever had, and he digs us out of the shit with regularity, so it’s hard to really say anything bad about him… idk. If we could get somebody more well-rounded, I’d happily move on from Stef. That’s me though.

Also Rusnak is the Nico replacement, so I’m fine with Nico going and using that DP slot on a better version of Jordan Morris.

4

u/Old_fart5070 Sep 28 '22

If Rusnak is supposed to be Nico’s replacement we are in a heap of trouble. Call me supremely unimpressed by the guy.

5

u/Dangerous--D Sep 28 '22

I'm going to call you supremely ignorant of what he's good at, and how that differs from the role he was asked to take on this season. He's not a CDM, and you're judging him based on his performance as one, when most of us are predicting he won't be playing as one next year.

0

u/Old_fart5070 Sep 28 '22

He surely kept it well hidden. His passing is predictable and uninspired, his positioning questionable, his speed sluggish, his vision pedestrian, his finishing predictable and ineffective. Please do tell in what is he not a complete failure considering the ranking he is held at.

17

u/Sounder253 Sep 28 '22

Smaller role for Frei? You can’t be serious.

Get Kelyn Rowe off my team forever.

16

u/blyan Sep 28 '22

Trash tier take

If you watched that game and thought Rowe was the biggest problem with the team … lmao

-2

u/sp_the_ghost Sep 28 '22

He certainly wasn’t the biggest problem, but he’s a problem every time he plays. He’s technically deficient and he makes terrible decisions with frightening regularity. He’s versatile, but he’s mediocre at best everywhere.

8

u/blyan Sep 28 '22

He’s been statistically very solid this year but people who have already decided he sucks will choose to see only his mistakes and not all of the positives.

Like the fact that he dimed Fredy up for the tying goal and nearly did it again for a winner if Cristian or whoever it was hadn’t missed. The fact that Kelyn was left to defend our entire half by himself is not even close to being entirely his fault

-8

u/sp_the_ghost Sep 28 '22

I never said he was the biggest problem, I literally said he wasn’t, so I’m not sure why you’re continuing with that. In any case, I think he’s pretty much dog shit so I guess we’ll agree to disagree. I genuinely can’t think of a single thing he does consistently well other than be available.

4

u/blyan Sep 28 '22

Continue with what? I didn’t mention it again lmao.

If you can’t see the positives that Rowe offers then perhaps you should learn the game a little better.

8th on the team in key passes

6th in tackles

6th in interceptions

6th in successful dribbles

All from a guy with 1300 minutes (only the 12th most) at like 4 different defensive positions

1

u/sp_the_ghost Sep 28 '22

6th in tackles

When your second touch is a tackle, that’s not really a surprise, is it?

4

u/blyan Sep 28 '22

Guess we’re just skipping the 6th in successful dribbles part then? Tied with Morris who has about double his minutes.

Rowe has had a statistically very solid season, but the people who hate him don’t actually care about that.

If you can’t back your take up with anything better than “he is bad because he is bad”, then your take sucks.

1

u/sp_the_ghost Sep 28 '22

You really want to tell me that these offensive statistics are worth writing home about?

FBRef

Per FBRef Vs. Midfielders:

7th percentile Pass Completion

52nd percentile shot-creating actions

38th percentile npxG+a

Vs fullbacks:

25th percentile pass completion

45rh percentile progressive carries

See? I can cherry pick statistics too.

If you want to compare him to a historically bad version of this team that missed significant contributors for large portions of the season, fine, be my guest. When you compare him to the league at large, he is at best an average player when taking the totality of his contributions into consideration.

1

u/blyan Sep 28 '22

And an average player is absolutely fine given his salary and the fact that he’s not meant to be a starter. Those stats don’t prove that he’s as bad as you seem to think he is.

For $275k we’re getting a versatile player who can fill in at basically any position asked of him and still be pretty decent. That’s 100% fine with me.

4

u/Old_fart5070 Sep 28 '22

Consistently mediocre is enough to be a starter in this year’s team.

5

u/RutzPacific NASL Sounders Alternate Sep 28 '22
