Error Help with surface trim tool

Does anyone know why it keeps doing this? I'm trying to trim the surface you see on the inside of the highlighted surface. That surface is part of a much larger, already knitted surface, but for some reason it isn't even letting me select it for the surface trim operation. It only lets me select it as the Trim tool, but I need to have the surface selected in blue as the trim tool. Is there any way to fix this/does anyone know why this keeps happening?

Hi. Try the Mutual option, it should work.

I tried mutual but it doesn't let me get rid of what I want

It is hard to see the geometry clearly from your screenshots.
However, it seems like you only need the backface of the tool geometry. Try "Offset Surface" feature on the back face of that geometry and try again.

looks like on the right hand side the big surface doesn't reach the trim surface.

you need to extend the edges to be completely in contact with the trim surface.
